I was very overweight
I have lost over 100 lbs
Saw my diabetic nurse for my yearly tests
MyHbA1c was 30
Have I gone to far cutting out carbs ?
Nurse was so lost for words never seen hba1c that low or someone that had lost that amount of weight in a year
Beening tested again in 3 months
Can aHbA1c be too low ?
Thanks for any help

Hi @smallerjo
Well done - obviously whatever you are doing is working well for you.
My understanding is your HbA1c is now within the normal range and that is what most of us here are working to achieve. I will leave it for others if it is possible to be too low as I don't know.
Have you reached your ideal weight? I ask this as I found I could slightly increase my carbs when I needed to stop my weight loss but I still restrict my carbs and keep testing to see what happens. I am trying to maintain my weight so it would be different for someone who is still trying to lose weight.

@smallerjo

Wow!! I don't think you have overdone it with the Carbs I think you have just blown away the DN and quite frankly I am as well. That is simply a fantastic effort and you should be so proud of what you have accomplished. If you have some time I'm sure many on here would love an overview of your journey etc. I certainly would.

some doctors would say it could be too low, but if achieving that level has not created hypos or effecting you in any other way then its all good.....

going from a high to a low long term reading quickly can sometimes cause damage to the micro vascular system but for you, over a year, it sounds like a health, steady drop.....

Hi. Well done. As long as you are having enough proteins, fats, veg and so on then don't worry as your body will have all the nutrients you need. The carbs can be kept low.

Thanks
I still have a bit more to lose but I am trying to keep at this weight for a few months then start again

This was taken last week I am about 190 lbs at the moment

Fantastic, well done, how did you do it, how many carbs and Cal's a day did you have, if you don't mind sharing.

I did it with myfittnesspal
I am on 1200 calories ( more if I do a lot of exercise )
My body can't cope with a lot of carbs so I cut them all out
( I will be starting putting small amounts back in and see how I cope now )
So I don't have rice , pasta , bread , cakes , only a small potato a day
I tried very small amounts of the healthier brown rice/bread/pasta and only a very small amount took bloods 2 hours later in the 12s or higher

Bloody brilliant... well done.. as to the HbA1c I would say how do you feel? I can't seem to find a recommended lower level but maybe someone else can. Odd question maybe but had you donated blood before the HbA1c? Apparently new red blood cell created after a donation can cause a lower than normal reading (according to Wikipedia) but don't quote me on that.

Only carbs I have are veg and small amount of fruit and porridge ( as my body can cope with it )

Thanks for your reply, have you got a typical days menu, sorry for all the questions, just trying to get into the low carb too :)

Porridge most days ( only carb my body is ok with )
Homemade soup / salad with cottage cheese or meat or tuna
Chicken curry with cauliflower rice / bolognaise with carrot and courgette noodles / roast with carrot and swede mash plus veg ( sometimes I have a small potatoe
Unlike most people that go lower carb I can't do high fat as I have gallstones and it's very painful if I have too much fat

Hi, well done on your results! My own story is similar, and from the research I've done it's not a problem for your HbA1c to go below 40. I had my gallbladder removed when I was 20, best thing ever since the pain was excruciating, hope you can get yours fixed soon
