This is rather a silly question but does anyone know why mushy peas are quite high carb? It's a pity as hubby loves mushy peas but we tend to avoid them.

Half a can contains 16g and peas themselves contain around 15g per 100g. That's not especially high?

One reason may be that they are high-GI due to the cells being 'mashed'?

If hubby has mushy peas he needs 3 units of insulin, but if he has normal peas he needs no insulin. I know don't bother with mushy peas, just wondered why. Have similar problem with parsnips.

As @Diabell says they are a higher gi carb than normal peas due to them being already mushed-up, so will tend to impact on bg levels faster.

Still doesn't explain why your OH doesn't need insulin for normal peas, I count them together with whatever else I'm eating.

He was told on Dafne course he didn't need insulin for Vegtables only baked beans, mushy peas and parsnips. Think we need to look into this.

Wow, that's not very good DAFNE advice. A lot of veg are carby in particular most root veg such as carrots, swede, turnips and so on when cooked. All beans and pulses etc are carby although many are low-GI and provide good fibre.

The best way is to bolus/don't bolus going from his own experiences of eating foods.

I was diagnosed 4 weeks ago with type 1 and my dietician told me not to carb count any veg! Maybe I need to also look into this further

I always think about mushy peas as a kind of pulse so I bolus for them like I would do with chick peas, lentils, butter beans, etc

Mushy peas are different from normal peas in that they're left to dry out before being picked, so I've always imagined that, along with the mushiness, is why they need a bolus.

I was given the same advice on diagnosis, but it was soon proven false.......I have to bolus for all carbs including veg and salad. If you're not counting them and your sugars are good afterwards then there's no worries.

Thanks very good points. Have never counted veg or salad perhaps we had better start, we have always found it difficult to get levels good as he can fluctuate so much for no reason, but then he has a lots of others health problems including Gastroparesis. Mushy peas are easy for him to eat now his left side of his face is paralyzed. This is another problem finding very soft food that is not too high in carbs. Any ideas?

Two tips, get carbs and cals as that gives you the carb content of a lot of everyday foods, you can either buy the book or download it on your smart phone, or just read the nutrition content on the can or packet. Sadly in contradiction to DAFNE advice there really aren't any 'free foods' so you do have to watch anything that passes your lips !

We have Carbs and Cals, must admit that we got to the stage where I could look at a meal and know how much insulin was needed as we tended to have the same meals over a month, but since his health has deteriorated, certain foods upset his stomach and now he is limited to soft food only it is difficult to know what to feed him
