How are you doing? :)

Supplementing with vit D has made a big difference to me in several ways, but it hasn't done squat for my bg levels. :(

@lindisfel when you supplement with Vit D, please make sure you take enough Vit K2 at the same time, or your body won't use the D properly. It is a bit worrying that the study quoted didn't give K2 at the same time as the Vit D...

What about magnesium? Studies say that it helps with too much insulin. What's your experience?

Well, I take magnesium, and I feel better for it, but it hasn't helped my bg levels - and i have no way of gauging insulin production so can't know if that has changed...

The trouble is that we are working blind so much of the time. :(

Ok. This might help. Your insulin levels from what my doc explained = your C-petitide levels because for every cell? Of insulin released, a ceptitide level is released. If your doc won't do c-petitide levels, you can ask a private lab to mesure it, fasting level and two hours post parandial. That will give you correct results as how the insulin is working. That's how doc worked out that I have crazy hyperinsulin levels
On another note, I supplement with vit D pour breast issues (fibrocystic breasts: bad.....) and that's good. I'm thinking of magnesium but waiting to see specialist first before adding anything else.

And one thing I just discovered, if you don't wash your hands before measuring glucose, the ratings are completely out of whack. I'm guessing all of you knew that but I didn't and was getting a crazy rating this morning!!!!

Thanks for the info on the cpeptide test, but that will only give a glimpse. Like a single blood glucose test. A snapshot. What we work with is the daily grind, since insulin, and insulin resistance is a fluctuating thing.

My best gauge of insulin is the way my body feels when I have insulin resistance. It is an awareness that kind of grows the longer you eat to your meter. Just as there are symptoms of low blood glucose, there are symptoms of high bg, and (in my experience) symptoms of insulin resistance. But the central theme/solution is to simply avoid all three of those.

I do not have diabetes
I spent a lot of time last night researching insulin resistance, insulinoma and excessive insulin.
I haven't come to many conclusions but I know that the tests for how much excess insulin in blood is not tested enough, especially at GP level and cost does come into it. Prediabetics have too much insulin in ratio to their blood glucose levels.
There is not enough research into what excess insulin has on supposedly normal people.
Is obesity caused by insulin?. Well we know that's true!
Is diabetes caused by being obese? Well if it is, in the first question, surely the insulin resistance must be caused by the excessive insulin.
So insulin, if it is in excess, then diabetes is more than likely to follow.

If prevention is obviously better than treatment, then why isn't there early checks in insulin levels?
Of course, a lot more goes into the reasons for not screening for those susceptible to diabetes, after it would save millions from the NHS budget, if the early signs of excess insulin were detected.

I'm not naive enough to counter medical doctrine but having the tools to stop an epidemic, has been around for decades and not many studies have been done and the ones that have have not had the success it should have.

I will discuss this with my endocrinologist at my next appointment.

Hi Nosher, If I remember rightly Kraft said hyperinsulinemia should actually be the criterion for diabetes and not Hba1c!
I seem to recall it was said that 90% of heart attacks were caused by hyperinsulin problems causing arterial inflammation.
regards
Derek

I too take D3 in liquid form. Calcium citrate, K2 and magnesium. Magnesium is meant to help diabetes and bowels. I take it in citrate form but it hasn't got my bowels to work!!

Vit d3 has definitely been sunshine for me. Again as a Its hard to establish what helps diabetes as far as a T1 is concerned because we are so reliant upon injections for our bloods.

Mentally for me the D3 is definitely a happiness drug. I know it has helped my bones enormously as I had a DEXA scan earlier this year and the results were great. My liquid for two drops each day on my melon or in a smoothie is 4000iu which is a lot. The two drops a day from a bottle is much more cost effective than the tablets I used to take.

Kraft looked at the problem from a different perspective than the experts at the time and made perfect sense with a few exceptions.
You will always get the weird ones(!) And those contrary to nature(!)
But it's very similar to the eat well plate, where some success has been had with meds. The thinking is skewed.
If you believed that the majority of T2, was down to insulin resistance because of excess, then a little lateral thinking would give you a different perspective on how to treat it. You would treat the insulin levels rather than the blood glucose levels.

That would lead to no meds and a different lifestyle in food choice.
It's very interesting and I have been thinking about this quite a lot today.

Yes, i supplement. I'm v fair skinned with childhood skin damage, so i don't sunbathe and wear a high spf.

So i supplement daily. Like @donnellysdogs my mood and outlook have transformed since i began supplementing. My major Vit D deficiency symptoms were body aches and mild, sporadic lifelong depression. Now i only ache from insulin resistance, which is much more manageable. :) and my mood is much lighter. I regret the years i lived under that cloud.

I take 5,000 units D3 daily (started out on 10,000 for a couple of months), and 200-300 units of K2. It is much more difficult to find useful recommendations on K2 dosage than you might think. However, all the info I can find on K2 at the moment is saying that the western diet is astonishingly deficient, and while deficiency is possible, overdosing is unheard of, so i err on the generous side.

As for brand, since the internet, the range of cheap, nasty, doubtful supplements has proliferated, and i am DEEPLY distrustful of any brand i don't know (there could be ANYTHING in those jars), so i buy Solgar nowadays, mainly because i recognise the name, the price is reassuringly not-budget, and they use brown glass jars, not plastic.

Obviously, those are very personal criteria. :)

Totally agree with non plastic jars for storage of anything. My D3 comes in a small brown glass bottle...

Thanks Brun I'll try that good stuff. I was wondering why I feel so rough at times.
I too am fair skinned and have had suspected melanomas removed. Were OK but have had rodent ulcers, so can't sunbathe. regards D.

I want to get to the bottom of this. I had 4.7 after eating yesterday two hours!!!! Cheese raclette! That's low for me - so think the insulin was on the high. No carbs so it would seem that high fat cheese sets off insulin too!!!!!!! This is crazy!!
