It is good to feel pride for a change!!! Well done.

My two nice ambulancemen explained to hubby (and me) that 1) narkiness occured at levels higher than 8.0 up to about 25 ish and before a come from DKA. Hypo's are also narky but different to them as they can be more physically involved with violence... hyper narkiness us more associated with tiredness.

In strange ways we are similar!! I have permanently lost my ability to eat full
Size meals due to my paralysed colon... but it makes me more aware of actually hanging in there to do my best to stay alive!!
And healthy!!

I have a friends daughter that was in a eating disorder unit for a year!! I have seen her struggles and its given me a different vision of struggles. She now toyrs the country to schools and places giving talks. She doesn't have to contend with diabetes too....

To be honest, I see the whole world as having some sort of eating probs... its not just me with paralysed colon and a stupud stomach, its not just you with bulimia... if you can ever get to watch people in a supermarket and what goes in trollies... boy, theres a lot of people with a lot of problems besides us.

The difference, we are actually recognising our problems and trying to deal with them... we can't afford to look back, nobody can.

You sound as if you have a lovely boyfriend, my hubby is my life... we do have to learn when we are displaying narkiness and take steps even if we are hugh and can blame it on this... or at least to say thankyou and niceness to them later!!

My lust of foods to eat is very, very small but like you I am on a journey to try and increase the things I can eat.

Some things I have grown to love!!
Rachels ginger yogurt with blueberries (but they come out of me whole and painful!)... so for 9g of carb I have 100g of melon and the yogurt!! Good vitamins.. full fat.

I also make sure I do have a lively big coffee bean (1/3 waitose decaff with waitrose peru/another type too) with single cream each day.
I love butternut squash now but have to limit it to 4 x100g a week. There is a lovely higgidly piggidly pue that I can eat.. despite technically I shouldn't as its pastry and spinach, cheese n pine nuts.. the spinach and pine nuts come out whole but they still at least come out! I can eat 1/4 of this pie.

I also have chronic nausea... not to point of being sick but its pretty much 80% of time whilst being awake. I tablet that I have stopped increased it to 100% nausea. I literally wanted to put fingers down throat and getrid of the nausea.

We have a fight. It will probably be on a permanent basis for us both but we need to keep positive and to see any small improvement as a big one for us!!

For me, analysing my food and nutrition helped me to get positive. I do have a good (cancer) therapist though that helps me with my stomach/ diabetes too... I have tasks set me every two weeks to see positives.... to get me to see that my small steps are actually huge...

I know when I can see a changing attitude with you and I absolutely applaud you.xx
Thankyou so much.we can do this together x x x
Ps... has your mum been referred to a falls team for help? Has she got an medic alert call necklace etc?

All meds can have some side effects... its balancing their good effects to bad ones... but normally there are other other alternatives if the first or second etc aren't really suiting. Never think you have to accept taking a drug that has side effects.....

It sounds like you are doing a great job at managing a whole host of difficult issues. It is bound to take some time to sort through all the things that may or may not be contributing to your high blood sugar readings. In the meantime the more times you manage to get through it without vomiting and the more foods you choose that are low carbohydrate the more you are helping yourself get ready to untangle that puzzle.

Hello Jo and welcome to the forum :) As mentioned by @debrasue, here is the basic information we give to new members and I hope this will help you. Ask as many questions as you want and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 220,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Read more on carbohydrates and diabetes.

Over 145,000 people have taken part in the Low Carb Program - a free 10 week structured education course that is helping people lose weight and reduce medication dependency by explaining the science behind carbs, insulin and GI.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.

You may also be interested to read questions to ask at a diabetic clinic.

Good morning Jogreen21, it sounds like you have a lot to deal with. I think you need to go back to your GP and ask to be referred to a specialist that can help you with your eating disorder. If you GP is not interested, then it might be better to see a different GP. Don't let them fob you off. Good luck

My go admitted to knowing nothing about bulimia but has now realised the extent of my illness.i'm waiting for him to hear back from dietician on Monday.he mentioned metformin but again needs advice himself.he was really nice and said we will conquer this together.he reckons as I don't eat much , my liver is producing too much glucose and my body is storing the sugar as fat (I've lost a stone in weight but can't lose anymore) I do need to lose about 2 stone to have a healthy weight.i don't want to be skinny, that's not a problem as Darren loves me regardless of how much I weigh.ive been 5stone 3 before (younger days) and in hospital on drips etc and defo NOT going back there again, I love this forum as I can get things off my chest and get invaluable advice.on the plus side it's day 3 of NO vomitting and I've already eaten my egg which I usually eat in the evening which I know is wrong time of the day.i'm even going to try a little roast chicken later on.my waking test result was over 17 so I'm forgetting about testing today and concentrating on trying to eat.thanx for reading my post x x

This is exactly what I am following and he is right - everything is doing exactly what he suggests it does at present. I just hope it continues.

I use lots of lard, butter and clotted cream, and I am eating all the fat and skin on the meats and its "LOVELY" I've stopped with any carbs other than those already inside the green vegetables .

Yesterday my dinner was
crab and prawns with mayonaise/ cream sauce on a bed of lettuce , avocado and chia seeds with olive oil and balsamic vinegar
fatty steak cooked in lard with mushrooms onion made into a cream and mustard gravy and accompanied with brussel sprouts, blueberries and kale all cooked in butter
raspberries with coconut ice-cream and clotted cream with a seed topping
two glasses of red wine.
My meal was one of the tastiest I have ever eaten and the two other "normal" people I cooked for loved it too. it was the only meal I needed yesterday and I won't eat another one until this evening.
My blood sugar changed from 5.4 to 7.0 then straight back again.

Hey - wow!!! Day 3 - no sick!! Brilliant... so, so brilliant. I am having 2 small pieces of chicken in curry sauce tonight with broccoli and butternut squash. This is the max I can eat to go through me without problems. Cant roast a breast as I hate leaving anything!! (I do still lick my plate at home!!)

Do reflect back to a week ago and think of just one positive about it!! Or more!!

Keep emotions up... if you can...

I've had music on all day to help me today. I woke up at 4am to do my injections and started talking for 21/2 hours!! All about 4 or 5 illnesses, my auntie that died of bouble breast, liver transplant and bone cancer! .... but it was all quite positive. And that helps with mood for reat of day and fell asleep again till 8am with youtube Andean music!!

You will get there. You can find balance with nutrition and life!!

That is wrong advice from your diabetes nurse!!

She may mean (nicely) that extra weight could make you more insulin resistant....but she should be enabling you to look and understand ratios, food, insulin, exercise etc...

Some people say that a certain insulin increases weight. I have had that insulin but not put on weight myself.....

It may just be that you are actually eating mire from things like being a bit down from diagnosis, or eating more etc.

Please can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong, my first tests the last 3 mornings have been over17.0 then I'm fine through the day then at night its high again.i do have an eating disorder but I'm really trying to sort that out with help from my nurse.ive only been eating what they call good foodbut I admit I dont eat a lot.also I had a shock (I got some bad news) would this affect my test results.my nurse also took my blood to do another Hbalc test.thankyou in advance x

Hi. I had exactly the same problems with my blood sugars. it took some time but I found that my slow acting wasnt high enough so now I take 24 units of detamir at night and this helped my sugars at night and I also take 11 units of detamir in the morning so this helps keep my sugars down till the evening/before bed time. Im also on novorapid during the day but till I got the detamir sorted I was struggling. What has worked for me might or might not work for you. If you can reduce worry or stress it helps so much. Have you been to a Dafne course yet.

Yippee !!! Day 4 who ever would have thought I'd get to day 4 without vomitting? I'm happy, excited, elated and all the other fab words I can't think of right now.i'm a bit miffed I tested 16-8 but I think part of this could be my body adjusting to keeping food in. Today's aim is an egg for breakfast and will try another at lunch and the same small amount of chicken I had yesterday.i'm trying not to let the high test results bother me too much as my main aim is to keep food in my tummy.hope everyone is as positive about their day as I am about mine.thankyou everyone, I couldn't have got this far without you x x x
