Maybe because like all good little Type 2's we should be taking our daily statins..Exactly! I also wonder why, but it is a direct recommendation.

How are people supposed to be properly informed if they are just ordered not to do something without adequate back up info!Exactly! I also wonder why, but it is a direct recommendation.
But aren't we just supposed to do what we're told by Dr GP..they don't seem to like informed patients very much..How are people supposed to be properly informed if they are just ordered not to do something without adequate back up info!![]()

"Plant sterols is the collective term for free and esterified phytosterols and phytoSTANOLS" (emphasis mine)This article refers to sterols. Benecol contains stanols, I wonder if there is a difference?

Not claiming this is the definitive answer to your question.

It appears there is :This article refers to sterols. Benecol contains stanols, I wonder if there is a difference?
It appears there is :
"In summary, noncholesterol sterols serve no physiologic function in man. All sterols are atherogenic if they accumulate in the arterial wall. Stanols are saturated sterols. They are not absorbed and can be used therapeutically to reduce cholesterol absorption from the intestine."

I need to delve deeper.

A very interesting article Bluetit. Thanks for that link. I stopped stenols/stanols when I first, by chance, discovered the NICE recommendations as I was and am taking statins.http://www.bmj.com/rapid-response/2...lant-sterols-nice-guidance-lipid-modification

Following on from writing his blog, Dr Briffa wrote to the BHF. Here he discusses their reply :This article talks generally about stanols and sterols but only quotes evidence from sterol use. Again I wonder if the stanols in Benecol are different?

I've no idea what my cholesterol numbers are unfortunately except the doc said they were high. No idea what CVD is? I take CalciD which is basically calcium as I've got soft bones... and suppose sometimes I'm soft in the headWhat are your cholesterol numbers?
My view is that as cholesterol is essential for life its a bit dangerous to start messing with it without knowing exactly what you are doing. Your doctor is highly unlikely to be an expert and will just be following the "guidelines" when giving you warnings about cholesterol. If you are worried about CVD then try and get a CAC scan which looks at calcium in the arteries and actually shows how "furred" they are.
I think this might be helpful but I don't understand it. Too many unknown abbreviations. Thanks anywayYou could reduce ldl by doing this but it may not reduce your cv risk (even statins don t always achieve this) and it sounds expensive. Why not decrease triglycerides (vldls) and increase Hdl (protective)by truing a low carb and high fat diet which many here have done to god effect.
Cardio Vascular Disease.. what "cholesterol" is allegedly supposed to cause..I've no idea what my cholesterol numbers are unfortunately except the doc said they were high. No idea what CVD is? I take CalciD which is basically calcium as I've got soft bones... and suppose sometimes I'm soft in the head

Not wanting to muddy the waters but have you come across the portfolio diet?Oh my brain hurts! I think I’ll just take my chances til my next review next month! Then re evaluate!
Not wanting to muddy the waters but have you come across the portfolio diet?
Its a Canadian invention and uses a ‘portfolio” of foods including stanols / sterols to lower cholesterol and reportedly achieves better results than statins or stanols / sterols alone do
