Cholesterol and diabetes

Exactly! I also wonder why, but it is a direct recommendation.
How are people supposed to be properly informed if they are just ordered not to do something without adequate back up info! :banghead:

But aren't we just supposed to do what we're told by Dr GP..they don't seem to like informed patients very much..

I don’t do as I’m told without sufficient explanation!

This article refers to sterols. Benecol contains stanols, I wonder if there is a difference?
"Plant sterols is the collective term for free and esterified phytosterols and phytoSTANOLS" (emphasis mine)
Not claiming this is the definitive answer to your question.

Thanks for that, I don’t think there is a definitive answer.

It appears there is :
"In summary, noncholesterol sterols serve no physiologic function in man. All sterols are atherogenic if they accumulate in the arterial wall. Stanols are saturated sterols. They are not absorbed and can be used therapeutically to reduce cholesterol absorption from the intestine."

I need to delve deeper.

Interesting, thanks for posting that. I didn’t manage to find that when I googled the difference just now!

A very interesting article Bluetit. Thanks for that link. I stopped stenols/stanols when I first, by chance, discovered the NICE recommendations as I was and am taking statins.
I'll have a chat with my GP and see what she thinks given the final paragraph of the BMJ article -
"
The fact that the lowering of cholesterol by plant sterols and
stanols is additive to dietary factors warrants a revisiting of the NICE
guidelines to ensure that the public does not lose an opportunity to avail
themselves of effective dietary based strategies for cholesterol control
and CVD risk reduction."

What are your cholesterol numbers?
My view is that as cholesterol is essential for life its a bit dangerous to start messing with it without knowing exactly what you are doing. Your doctor is highly unlikely to be an expert and will just be following the "guidelines" when giving you warnings about cholesterol. If you are worried about CVD then try and get a CAC scan which looks at calcium in the arteries and actually shows how "furred" they are.
I've no idea what my cholesterol numbers are unfortunately except the doc said they were high. No idea what CVD is? I take CalciD which is basically calcium as I've got soft bones... and suppose sometimes I'm soft in the head

You could reduce ldl by doing this but it may not reduce your cv risk (even statins don t always achieve this) and it sounds expensive. Why not decrease triglycerides (vldls) and increase Hdl (protective)by truing a low carb and high fat diet which many here have done to god effect.
I think this might be helpful but I don't understand it. Too many unknown abbreviations. Thanks anyway

Cardio Vascular Disease.. what "cholesterol" is allegedly supposed to cause..
Try and get the numbers from the doc especially if they have a lipid breakdown then we can help with deciphering what they tell you about "good' and "bad" cholesterol in your body.

I give up. I'm trying to make informed decisions and I don't understand any of it. Trying very hard to stay positive but I feel I'm beginning to drown under a mass of conflicting info. Just want to bring down my cholesterol but suppose I should find an exact figure first so I know where to go

CVD stands for Cardio Vascular Disease.

Oh my brain hurts! I think I’ll just take my chances til my next review next month! Then re evaluate!
Not wanting to muddy the waters but have you come across the portfolio diet?
Its a Canadian invention and uses a ‘portfolio” of foods including stanols / sterols to lower cholesterol and reportedly achieves better results than statins or stanols / sterols alone do

I have read about something similar to this and I do have psyllium husk, nuts and almond milk every day, hopefully those and the Benecol will improve my figures enough to stall my GP with his statin talk!
