Hi folks,

So glad there's so much expertise out here, I've only guessed on this forum for a while, but joined today.

Hope you don't think it's selfish to ask a question on my first post, but does anyone know of a nut free alternative instead of almond (or other nut based) flours?

Diagnosed T2 about 6 months ago, I think I've eaten myself into diabetes, but am struggling to lose weight by portion control alone. Am loving the look of LCHF and I think I could do it quite easily as the list of LC foods looks a bit like a part of my favorite food list (with the bread, rice and spuds removed) but...

Am also allergic to nuts so all those recipes using almond flour etc are a no no for me.

Anyone know of anything else I can use?

Thanks!

Dave

Some people with tree nut/peanut allergies don't have a problem with coconut... But if that's out too, I have no idea. I'm not much of a baker though. Been following LCHF and Keto without using any kind of flower. Just love my eggs, bacon, cheeses, salads, veggies, fish and meat. I wouldn't know how to fit anything baked in there, I'm stuffed. ;) Maybe check dietdoctor.com for recipies?

Is coconut flour any good to you? I know some people are ok with coconut as it’s a ‘drupe’ (whatever that is) rather than a true nut. You need to increase liquid in the recipe though as coconut flour is very absorbent

Snap! :joyful:

Hi @Davese20 I believe @ziggy_w has experimented with some non nut based low carb flours. Can’t for the life of me remember what they’re called, but hopefully she will see this.

Oopsie sorry, just noticed this is your first post @Davese20 , welcome to the Forum.
I’ll tag in @daisy1 for her useful welcome info post.

Thanks, I guess I'm a bit weird, I can pick up nuts straight away as they taste metallic to me. I get the metal taste well ahead of the swelling and breathlessness that have me reading for the epipen.

Not allergic to coconut (so far) but I get the metallic taste and out makes my lips tingle so I avoid. Thanks for the info though! Much appreciated!

Wow, never heard of a drupe before - had to go look it up! Thanks for the tip. I guess the search is still on!

Does anyone have any experience of chickpea flour?
I only know of it as an ingredient for onion bhajis.
However, I know some people do not ingest chickpeas so can eat hummus and felafel without rising BG.

Ah, that's too bad... I never made an LCHF pizza, but from what I gather the crust can be made from cauliflower-rice. And far as I know an oopsie bread is made without nuts... (psyllium husk is from a seed, so should be okay...). But that's about all I can think of right now. Good luck!

That's a great tip, thanks, got no problems with chick peas, that's deffo worth me having a go!

Thanks@Hotpepper20000, that gives me more options. Much appreciated.
You are welcome.
My advice is if you are just staring out with LCHF just stick to protein, fat, and above ground vegetables. It’s easy to make it more complicated then it needs to be and then get overwhelmed.
As you adjust you can experiment with low carb baking.

I hope it helps.
Just spotted a typo in my original message.
I meant to say that some people don’t ingest the carbs in chickpeas.

@Davese20 - I went through a phase of eating (a fair amount) of peanuts, near the beginning of my time as T2, when trying to stop losing weight, but aside from a rather battered looking small bag in my handbag (as emergency rations!), I haven't had any obvious nuts in an age. The reason the small bag in my handbag is so battered is how long it's been in there, untouched.

I'm not allergic not nuts, as you are, but if I have too many I find I have unwanted effects (involving inappropriate amounts of time locked in small rooms), so I just have other "stuff".

One thing I might suggest is just trying to eat LC, without focusing on the things you can't have (aside from the safety aspect, obviously!). There's a LOT of eat on LC and many alternatives are at least as delicious as some of the things we side-step.

I hope you can settle into and enjoy your LC journey and have decent success with it. It has certainly changed many lives on tis forum, for the better.
