Hi all :)
Currently I am on a dramatic weight loss journey..I have lost nearly 5 stones since mid April..but I am becoming concerned about the possibility of being left with loose skin. Although I try to keep active and have started to do some weight training, I am struggling with my lower body due to a knee injury (can’t do squats)
Does anybody have any tips regarding this please?
Much appreciated :)

Firstly congratulations on your amazing result. I'm sure your next HbA1c will be even better than your last.
Are you still intermittent fasting? I have heard that this helps with skin tightening a bit so you may be all right. I have a few "saggy" bits but not as much as I expected after losing 8 stones. Maybe try a few extended fasts to see if that helps at all? Anecdotally I have read that the results can be visible quite quickly.
Edit to add I think it is Dr Fung who says he has never had to refer a fasting client for skin reduction surgery ever.

Have you tried squats using ayoga ball for bacm support? It keeps you in the right position. Otherwise can you do other liwer body things like cycling or leg presses?

Hi @Petaluk first congratulations on how well you’re doing you must be thrilled with the way you’re turning things around.
I agree with @bulkbiker - although my weight loss has been smaller at 5 stone since diagnosis the majority of my loss was via Intermittent fasting with LCHF and I have very little lose skin despite not doing significant exercise. Could be genetics too as I’ve got a fairly elastic skin thankfully as I’ve lost much weight and regained it over the years thanks to low fat regimes! but I’m positive that fasting has also helped with skin tightening this time round and more importantly I seem to be maintaining fairly easily and not putting it back on. Struggle is more to stop losing any more as I’m now thin! ( never ever thought I’d say I’m thin !)

Have you already got any loose skin yet? One of my acquaintances recently told me she had lost 7 stones a couple of years ago and, apart from her tummy and bum being a bit saggy and less firm than it used to be, her skin is fine. She is 62 years old.

I guess a better description would be saggy, rather than loose elastic thin skin, like some people I have seen on utube.

Thank you for your response it gives me much hope :)

I currently do 24 hour minimum fasts each day, 1meal a day, usually all food within 1 hour window, although I do sometimes drink a glass of milk within the 6 hour window as recently my bones have been hurting :/
I did do a couple of 48 hour fasts when my weight loss stalled in July and it really helped, but my energy levels have been terrible lately, maybe down to a recent course of antibiotics? Also I have suffered some dramatic hair loss..eekk! But apparently, according to some sources, this is common with diabetes??

I think I need to check out Dr Fung!!

Wow, you lost 8 stones! That’s amazing! Congratulations to you :)

My physiotherapist has recommended using a rolled up towel between my knees, but my knee still swells up.
I’m currently trying slender tone biceps pads above my knee area.
I just hate flabby inner thighs and saggy bottom though lol...guess it’s a long journey back to my (hopefully) old (will be much older) 60kg body..that’s the plan anyways :)

I must admit I was terrified after stumbling across some videos on utube of 100lbs weight loss and loose skin as my weight loss goal is more than that!

Just for info I’ve only ever done Intermittent fasting. I did one meal a day for a month so fasting 23 hours and then moved up to two meals. I now eat three small meals usually in an 8 hour window. Hope this helps.

Well, as your buddy buddy with Dr.Fung lucky devil to have had the pleasure to be in his company, I can honestly say, although I have not lost as much weight as yourself or others, congratulations, I have, well at the moment, time of speaking, not any loose saggies, and I do intermittent fasting three times a week, so our beloved Dr. Fung could be right, here is one fan who follows his recommendations and seems to be working as he forsees indicates, so far...I will let him know if I need him to refer me to a skin reduction surgeon??

Have a nice evening from a warm sunny mallorca evening, and just off for a good slurp of white dry sharp vino a bottle from the vineyard at the bottom of my garden, it comes in handy sometimes!!

Btw..I really recommend slender tones waist belts for anyone that can use them (see faq on their website, ppl with the big c and type 1 , as they inject aren’t advised to use them sadly) mine has really helped me now and in the past..if you are very large in the tummy area as I was, I would recommend the mans belt as the waist is larger and on slender tones website there is a waist extender you can buy to make it even bigger! I unfortunately only found this out recently, so was stuck with the small ladies one and had to slim down to get it back on.

This is amazing, I think I am going to try this. I fast 7 days a week, well, dont snack inbetween meals x 3 small a day, so the period of no snacking as Dr. Fung states, is actually intermittent fasting, then I do 2 days 18 hour fast no breakfast, then 1 day 24 hour fast 8pm to 8pm no breakfast or lunch just evening meal, I like your style, I am going to do a month of one meal a day, watch this space....

A low carbohydrate diet ( less than 20g in 24 hours)
I eat a keto style diet with very little processed foods. A lot of raw clean foods...eggs, steak, salmon, avocado (love these) cheese, berries, prawns, mayonnaise, mushrooms, vine tomatoes, sugar free jelly (10 cal - Hartley’s) , oppo ice cream, double cream ( a little because of the fat and calories) lots of water, small amounts of caffeine.
But I am type 2, I see you are type 1 so you would have to change your carbohydrate uptake as my diet can lower BGS greatly, and as you know, you would have to be careful because of possible hypos.
Also by fasting my body is running on ketones a lot, which is dodgy for type 1 diabetics, I’ve been told.

But overall I love the diet, albeit, it can be expensive, I feel much healthier than I did on processed foods and starchy carbohydrates ( rice, bread, cereals, pasta, potatoes etc)
Basically, to sum it up, I choose fruit and vegetables grown above ground as they generally have low carbohydrate value.
Hope this helps :)

Hello and welcome to the Forum :) Here is the Basic Information we give to new members and I hope you will find it useful. Ask as many questions as you need to and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 235,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:
  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Read more on carbohydrates and diabetes.

Over 145,000 people have taken part in the Low Carb Program - a 10 week structured education course that is helping people lose weight and reduce medication dependency by explaining the science behind carbs, insulin and GI.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:
  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.

You may also be interested to read questions to ask at a diabetic clinic.

I lost 8 stone and thought because I'm young(ish) that my skin would bounce back with relative ease!

Nope.

On the other hand, you see stories (like the one above) about people shedding huge amounts of weight and being left with very little loose skin.

I guess i'm saying to manage your expectations in terms of potential loose skin, you could do everything right in terms of preventing it and follow all the advice to the letter, but you might still end up with some.
Fingers crossed that the fasting advice people have given works for you! :)

As @BB8.HG says, you may need to manage your expectations.

Age, skin type, length of time you were overweight, even the speed at which you gained can be relevant, as well as how you lose it. Someone once told me that the skin bounces back more easily if you are under 40 and after that it is luck of the draw.

If I were you (I'm not, because weight loss is agonisingly slow for me :) ) then I would be taking great care of the skin as I lost the weight - moisturising it on the outside and nourishing it from the inside, with excellent nutrition.

Hope that helps!
