Hi all, had my annual review with the DSN at my surgery today, best ever as a result of Libre. BUT: I need to rant and where better than here. Having just got Libre on scrip, I'd ordered the next two so I could collect them today from the pharmacy adjoining the surgery. The rest of my scrip was there, but no request for Libre and they didn't have any anyway so they'd have to be ordered. I was told to check with the surgery so I did. The scrip had been issued but not signed. I explained that I really needed it today so I could put it on a day early for it to settle down. The very helpful receptionist said she'd contact the duty doctor and ask him to sign it and to phone them this afternoon.

I got home and checked online, and now it seems the scrip has been issued. This ties in with the nurse telling me that the senior GP had asked her that morning whether I still met all the umpteen criteria required to qualify for Libre and had obviously delayed signing off the scrip till he'd spoken with her. I'm aware that having T1 makes me expensive for both the NHS and my GP practice. I'm also fed up with being policed like a two year old. I've self-funded Libre for over a year and improved enough - by the arbitrary rules of my CCG - to qualify for it on scrip. No congratulations (except from my terrific nurse), just on my case about whether I'm still behaving 4 weeks later! And no recognition of the fact that not only does this delay the **** thing working, I'll have to do another 15 miles round trip to collect them. Add in the effect of the stress and anger at all this on my bg - well done that GP!

One day they'll all be really embarrassed by the way they have handled the early response to Freestyle Libre, not that that's any consolation now.

It makes them look like dinosaurs, it's quite bizarre. It's not like their own bodies sit around and only test their blood glucose eight times a day, and then leave it do whatever it wants the rest of the time, is it? there is a continuous stream of signalling that keeps their blood glucose in range. All Libre is doing is creating something a little bit closer to what a body with properly functioning blood glucose does.

@Tony337 they are absolutely beautiful.

Bit disappointed you aren't a secret Father Christmas though, I suppose if you are selling them for charity, you are really.

I don't really sell them they sell themselves which is a bit magical really.
This is my third year of doing it and this is what happens.........

I've been collecting wood all year...people give it me....they knock on my door with branches etc and my dad phones me to tell me when a trees been lopped I get messages on facebook telling me where to go foraging....and I'm a school caretaker and our parents and staff bring me branches.

I get bags of tinsel and embellishments given me for decoration.

I go into hibernation in my workshop from about 1st November knocking them out as best I can.

Then through word of mouth I get orders here there and everywhere I don't advertise I'm just surrounded by really nice people who like my reindeer.

I hope that doesn't sound like I'm showing off or being smug it is just the way it works.

I've got around 40 orders already.........

Tally ho Tony

That's lovely. The idea of everyone bringing you bits of wood is really nice, it makes it a real community thing. You are allowed to sound smug over this, but you really aren't being smug, you are allowed to blow your own trumpet over this, they look lovely, and the whole thing is great.

Not so slow novo :D

TBH I don't recall what quick acting insulin Becca is on, but chances are she's on the same.......?! but thats not whats really I'm questioning. How come 2 people can take the same insulin and the start times be so different?

It might be that Becca is having more insulin resistance in the morning, maybe a bigger DP effect.

Mostly Novorapid will work for me after 20 minutes, but it can take longer sometimes, but there's usually a reason, mostly a corrected hypo, and too many carbs sloshing around. Or if my blood sugar is heading upwards when I bolus it can take longer. Maybe that's the problem for Becca, DP is pushing her blood sugar up in the morning, and the insulin takes longer to work.

Thanks Alison I am old school where the expression "nobody likes a show off" applies.

That sounds ideal for you Sue.
We both cook so if HI makes higher carb meals I try to reduce the carb amount. He does like pies (did I say he was born and brought up in Scotland?) so I remove the filling and maybe have some crust too though not if he’s added spuds. The sad thing about his Scottish memories is that we can’t get salmon caught fresh from the stream or herring from the local fishing fleet here in the SE.
@Fairygodmother, I'd love a pie, quiche, pastie or anything with pastry. I loved baking and now I don't do a thing:arghh:

Who knows @Alison54321 it really is a mystery and I can't get to the bottom of it.

So why is it that some people have to wait an extended time for injected insulin to start working? I don't understand why? yes we're all different but why does it take becca for example 2hrs and 10-15mins for me?

Jolly good question slip. Only in the mornings. After about 2pm things settle down. Sugars leap up from 3am and I usually have an injection if awake. Then another pre breakfast. It is painful waiting to eat. I have tried eating a tiny amount just to let my body know I am not starving it. It makes not a jot of difference. If I just get on and eat my berries and yoghurt sugar levels leap up.

On Humalog by the way. Even with this, not eligible for pump. Though have always said I don’t want one. If this Fiasp doesn’t do the trick am stuffed!

It might be worth trying Levemir, as a basal. I was reading the other day that it is supposed to inhibit release of glucose from the liver. It does this because it binds to albumin, and some of it goes into the liver, this is normal, people without diabetes have a small amount of insulin in their liver, pancreas, and brain, and this reduces the amount of glucose the liver releases.

It's way more complicated than that, and I can't find any of the links to the stuff I read, but one thing I read said that PWD had less insulin in the brain, the pancreas, and the liver, than normal people, which is part of the signalling process, and then it said that some new insulins would change this, and Levemir is, I believe, one of those insulins.

So it may reduce the DP for you. I can't explain this any better, because it's very complicated, and I can't do an in depth explanation, but I don't have DP since I started using it.

Think I am having some of same issues as Becca and Slip. My morning BG are getting ridiculous now. I am on a ratio of 1:4. Past week or so overnight BG have been OK waking with about 6 or 7. I have 5 spoonfuls of porridge and mil/water so about 40 g of carbs. I take my Novoslow about 25 mins before I eat. About 1.5/ 2 hours late my BG will be sitting at 13+. Come lunchtime about 5 hours after initial jab its back down again to 6 or 7.

Its only the mornings which makes it infuriating. Come the afternoon it will have risen after lunch but drop back quickly before dinner to a pleasant 5 or lower. Evening meal is usually OK as is the before bed BG

Anyone have any thoughts as to how to stop BG rising so steeply and falling so sharply.

If it was not for Libre of course I probably would not be aware of this. I would check BG when I got up, it would be say 6 or 7. When I check again at lunchtime it would still be around 6 or 7

Evening all,

Lots of posts to catch up on. Hope you are all well

Update on my work situation- turns out that two other colleagues had spoken to the head too about the same concerns. Low and behold.. we get told today (that after this week) they will adjust the monitoring timetable as we have had our fair share...

On another positive note- Some little cherubs in my class have decided they want to raise money for diabetes at our school xmas fair! (They are 9)

Being with a class of 30 children alone (sometimes) I have taught them how to spot signs of a hypo. They are also very familiar with my spike alarms too and totally fascinated with my Libre.

Diabetes front- I have had the worst levels I’ve had since going low carb (9months). Was in double figures most of the weekend until yesterday lunch time. Stress? Shark week? No idea! They higher sugars are making me feel hungry all the time. I have increased my bolus dose.. (Today has been better but still not within my usual targets).

I have found the same by reducing to one main meal, mid afternoon. All corrections and sorting are then complete by bedtime.
Just need to get breakfast sorted now. Hoping when I finally get Fiasp it works and I can eat breakfast soon after injecting, instead of 1-2 hours.
Hi becca i changed to fiasp a couple of months ago ànd it does start working almost immediately

Looks like we are all syncing up again :hilarious:

I don't so much get a DP, not that I have noticed anyway but my sugars do try and go through the roof after breakfast and then I get to work, can have anything up to 6 units to correct and stop it going up. :shifty:

Aspidistra is not prefect but it acts way quicker than Novaslow and the downward spiral is way less sever then Nova.

Have noticed this becoming a little more frequent since moving my Dulac to first thing in the morning.

Still experimenting :)
