Hi

I saw an article from the NHS web site which showed "The pancreas can be triggered to regenerate itself through a type of fasting diet, say US researchers,"

Just curious if any has tried "fast mimicking diets" or just fasting, and how it worked out.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum. I don't know of any humans that have managed to reverse their type 1 diabetes through any kind of diet like these mice did.

However, lots of type 2 diabetics have managed to achieve normal blood glucose levels through a low carb high fat diet or through a low calorie diet (i.e. Newcastle diet).

Welcome to the forum, a good question. I have tried a very low calorie diet with intermittent 24 hour fasting and what I did find was a better tolerance when carbs were re-introduced. However, it's not long lasting. I did speak to an endocrinologist about my experience and he suggested that I was basically resting the pancreas by not needing so much insulin for a period of time so it was better able to cope with the demand when I upped my carbs. Not empirical evidence, just my personal experience.

I don’t understand their definition of fasting! “The researchers put the mice on a four-day fasting regimen consisting of a low-calorie, low-protein, low-carbohydrate and high-fat (FMD) diet.”
Here’s the article referred to by the OP:
https://www.nhs.uk/news/diabetes/fasting-diet-may-help-regenerate-a-diabetic-pancreas/
"Mice were fed for four days on a low-calorie, low-protein and low-carbohydrate but high-fat diet, receiving half their normal daily calorie intake on day one, followed by three days of 10% of their normal calorie intake.

Researchers repeated this fast on three occasions, with 10 days of refeeding in between. They then examined the pancreas."

The researchers described the diet as a "diet mimicking fasting cycles", so only the person who wrote the headline describes it as a "fasting diet". I wish they had also tried actual fasting on the mice. Perhaps they thought it was too cruel not to feed the mice anything for a few days.

Thanks for the comments and link to the forum..

The low carb/ketogenic diet for type2, has really been helpful, its great not to use the pills anymore. Its exciting to know there might be possibility of going beyond management to regeneration. The Article seems to suggest that the beta cells might regenerate if a person switches from fasting for a number of days in a month, then going back to there normal dietry routine, its interesting to know what the results of any human studies might be.

Similar to this is guess.

Fasting is the willing abstinence or reduction from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. Seems what I consider to be a fast, as in no food at all, is an absolute or dry fast.

Have you ever had your fasting insulin tested? Might be an idea so you can see if you are over or underproducing?

There are lots of articles about fasting and it's effects. I've seen little research that convinces me that it helps greatly on any front. I'm sure others will shoot me down:)

I ve never done a fasting insulin test before, arnt type 2 's meant to be Insulin resistant?
Did do a Hba1c few months ago , was 35 (was 98 in 2015)

Hi I have T1D about 20 years and now I am 34. I started keto diyet and fastings and now in 4th month. HA1c is goes down 7,5 to 6,2 and I feel better now. Last check up doctor wanted a test c peptid and result was good 0,9 ng/ml (scale 0,8-4,2) when I see it I had a hope about regenerate my pancreas and I find fasting method will give a try it. Anybody try it before can you share results?
