midnightrider,you sure have done well,congrats! ;)
Thanks.
I've never been convinced that I was diabetic, I believe that I was insulin resistant (HbA1c 74 at diagnosis) but found it far too easy to overcome for it to have been full blown diabetes. I also had no symptoms, diagnosis was accidental.
Walking briskly for 30 - 60 minutes a day and cutting carbs down to 120 - 150g a day wasn't too difficult. Although I lost 7 stones in all, by the time my weight was down by about 25lbs within 2 months of diagnosis, my BG levels were normal (without meds) and have remained so ever since.
This doesn't fit with the struggles which some people have with their BG control.
Whilst there is no conclusive proof of this, there is evidence that metabolic syndrome/ insulin resistance occurs first, gradually damaging the pancreas, causing elevated BG/HbA1c. If addressed early enough, it would appear that the pancreas and BG control can recover completely (as in my case). However, if left untreated whether through not being diagnosed or the diagnosis not being acted on (diet/exercise) the damage will reach a stage where recovery is not possible.
I do believe that the most important factor is to remove visceral fat from the liver and pancreas, which will only be achieved through diet and exercise. As this is the cause of insulin resistance, at best this can lead to a full recovery. At the very least, it will allow for optimum performance in BG control.

FBG at 0645 was 5.3, food yesterday was;

Breakfast: 3/4 cup honey nut cheerios w/2% milk, black tea, 500 mg metformin
Lunch: homemade tamagoyaki (Japanese layered omelette sandwich roll) w/diced ham, 4 dried apricots, black tea
Dinner: whole mushrooms stir fried in Harvey's Bristol Cream (sherry) and butter w/chopped green onions and bean sprouts, 1/4 cup unsalted cashews, small bowl zero calorie strawberry Jello, glass of red wine, black tea, 500 mg metformin
Snack: glass of dark rum and diet Pepsi

Light skiff of snow, cloudy and minus 4C, looks like I'm not too skilled in the tamagoyaki department, my layers were melded into each other but it was very tasty. Income tax deadline here in Canada today, so will be gainfully occupied figuring out how much I owe...

Edited to add cashews and Jello

I am lucky for sure, but only with the 3/4 cup and just enough milk to float them. I am not so fortunate with Frosted Flakes, Sunny Boy, Cream of Wheat or even Grits, which all seem to make my blood sugars rise and stay up for a dog's age. Of course, I do like maple syrup on my cream of wheat or grits... :)

Other
4.9.

Yesterday I ate a hard boiled egg and about 180g of avocado (weight of edible parts once I'd stoned and peeled them). I know this is nowhere near enough food, but food is still freaking me out generally and all feels like poison, and if I get too close to my recommended calorie intake I feel like I've over-eaten and am tempted to purge, and usually succumb. I've been prescribed Cymbalta to help with my depression and anxiety, starting on a low dose for a couple of weeks to help me ease into it, and it will take a few weeks after I'm on a full dose to start taking proper effect.

Well 4.9 FBG sounds excellent to me and I'm sure there are others on here who would love and agree with that! One hard boiled egg and part of an avocado does not sound like enough for human daily consumption, I'm sure others will chime in here and attempt to fill in some of your nutrition blanks...

Wednesday May 01

FBG was 4.9 at 0900, food yesterday was;
Breakfast: 3/4 cup honey nut cheerios w/2% milk, black tea, 500 mg metformin
Lunch: 3 scrambled eggs, 1/4 cup salted macadamia nuts, black tea
Dinner: Home bbq steak, green salad w/Kraft 1000 Islands dressing, 4 glasses red wine, black tea, 500 mg metformin
Snack: 1 glass Canadian rye whiskey w/diet ginger ale

FBG was a bit lower than expected, likely because I took it at 0900 instead of on awakening at o8oo. Weather clear and sunny temp is 1C, finished income taxes and efiled, installing pot lights at daughter # 2's, learning how to hang suspended ceiling...
