Hi Madhon.
Any low carb food can be eaten at any time, no need to restrict your choices and you don’t even have to eat in the morning.

Mary Berry's and Jamie Oliver's recipes are really LCHF with slight modifications. I recommend them.

Hello tbh if you have any LCHF dinners left over from the night before, you can heat it up and eat it for breakfast and pack it for lunch. There are a lot of option such as avocados, certain plain yogurts, 100% sausages, slices or shredded chicken, salads, berries for the yogurts, or you can be basic and have an extra cream in coffee - which I find does make me last until lunch time for lunch. You just have to be extra creative :)

Well it's a good job you don't like porridge because that is likely to raise your blood sugar levels!

Not liking eggs is a shame because they make a good staple breakfast and lunch. What about a full fat Greek yogurt (Fage is a nice one) with 3 strawberries chopped up and mixed in, or half a dozen raspberries. Or even just a coffee with double cream and no food. Or think outside the box and eat foods not normally associated with breakfast such as cold meats, cheese, a tomato. Same sort of things at lunch time - maybe a small tin of salmon with a few cherry toms and some cheese and salad stuff.

Thanks for that,

As i don't have things left from the evening usually because my wife is doing slimming world so she takes any leftovers to work with her, the cold meats etc sounds a good idea as i like those things quite a lot.

I’m slightly concerned how much you know about the carb issue too seeing as you mentioned porridge as an option you considered. Have you seen this? http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/basic-information-for-newly-diagnosed-diabetics.26870/. Do you know to avoid/limit carbs of all types not just sugar and “white” ones?

Can I just issue a word of caution here. Slimming world can easily mean a lot of “syn free” carbs if you’re not careful. I appreciate it’s not you on it but sharing such meals won’t help you at all.

Hi,

Yes i know about the white carb types, I've always preferred wholemeal over white bread, wholegrain rice etc.

The slimming world group leader for her is type 1 diabetic and has said its an ok one for diatetcs.

Thanks

The wholemeal/brown versions of bread, rice and pasta are generally just as bad for a Type 2 as the white variants I'm afraid.

Hate to break it to you, but carb colour doesn't matter for a T2; you will have to process them sooner or later. For us, a carb is a carb... (A T1 adjusts insulin to account for carb intake. T1 and T2, and the many other brands of diabetes, are all different conditions.).

Oh dear you’ve just confirmed my fears.

White and brown have the same carbs pretty much. Common mistake to make and propagated by outdated knowledge. All carb will affect your blood sugars. Of any colour or grain.

Type 1 and type 2 are different animals when it comes to diet. A type one will be taking insulin and most likely not be insulin resistant. A type 2 almost certainly will be insulin resistant and hopefully not immediately on insulin as there are other numerous, less dramatic methods to be explore first most especially type of food.

It’s in slimming worlds financial interest, as well as more of that outdated knowledge, that causes slimming world (and other calories control methods) to perpetuate that belief it’s ok. It can be - done very carefully -but easily led down the carb path.

More links for info and ideas

Can I suggest you take a good look at low carb high fat methods of eating (keto is just a version of this). It helps many of us lose significant amounts of weight, if desired, keep our numbers down and for some even eliminate medications and achieve remission and reduce or improve complications. Try clicking these links for more detailed explanations that are well worth readings

https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog/jokalsbeek.401801/ for info including low carb made simple

And https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/category/success-stories-and-testimonials.43/ to show it really works and for motivation

and https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/what-have-you-eaten-today.75781/ for food ideas

also https://www.dietdoctor.com/ for more food ideas and general info of carb content of foods. Lots of other websites for recipes out there too. Just use the term low carb or keto with whatever you fancy.

Also it’s very important to be able to check for yourself what’s happening so you can make the necessary adjustments day to day and meal by meal rather than wait 3, 6 or even 12 months and then have no idea what had what effect. Getting a blood glucose meter is the only way to do this (no matter what contradictory advice you may have heard - it’s usually budget based rather than anything more scientific). Please ask if you want any guidance on this.

IMPORTANT FOR ANYONE ON MEDS CONSIDERING LOWERING CARBS: if you lower your carbs then any glucose lowering meds may need to be adjusted accordingly to make sure you aren’t taking more than your new diet requires. It can cause a hypo if you have more gliclazide or insulin etc (this is not relevant for metformin on its own) than your new carb intake requires. Keep a close eye on your numbers and do this with your dr’s knowledge. Please don’t be put off by an ill informed out dated rubbishing of low carb diets or being told you should eat carbs to match meds, it should be the other way around.

Practice IF and fast straight through breakfast. If you absolutely need to "eat" something consider bulletproof coffee. IF will work wonders on your diabetic numbers. DISCLAIMER: If you are taking medication for your diabetes or high blood pressure then you definitely may want to consult with your doctor before practicing fasting.

Hi. I was diagnosed over 5 yrs ago T2. I was send on a diabetes course they tell you to eat a healthy normal diet and give you pointers. Usually your GP refers you on diagnosis. I have been lucky to keep my hba1c between 46 and 50 on diet alone. I have had a stressful 6 months my last readings were 65 So have been put on Jardinine (I think it's called) with the hope of getting back to 46. I'm under the Intermediate Diabetic Dietitan. For breakfast I have 40g of porridge or bran with yoghurt and fruit. Have now reduced to 30g as trying to lose weight. I have sour dough bread 2 slices with meat/fish/cheese/eggs/salad and dinner I have 60g of uncooked rice, pasta 4 new potatoes with skins on with veg/chicken/fish. Having carbs is not a prob to the specialist team I see. Perhaps save getting conflicting advice for you personally you should ask you diabetes nurse/GP to send you on course or dietitian for right advice for you to manage yr condition.

That’s quite a large amount of carbs for a T2 to eat and it’s showing in your elevated numbers, what your ‘team’ thinks about carbs is moot, it’s what you think about them that’s important.

Do you have a meter and test out some of these very high carb meals? Testing before and again an hour and 2 hours after first bite may throw up some shocks for you.

Low carb is now supported by the nhs. Sadly many dieticians, drs and nurses haven’t caught up with that yet.
