Fatty Liver

I think i am falling apart. On top of my recent asthma diagnosis, I today got the results of my ultrasound and I have a fatty liver.

GP says the only treatment is for me to lose weight. I pointed out that I have been successfully controlling my blood sugar by diet only for 8 years, and only eat 1200 cals a day max. She looked at me and said I shouldnt reduce my calories any lower. And agreed that my blood sugar levels prove I am not secretly eating rubbish sugary foods.

She then suggested referring me for exercise. I pointed out that I have got ME and am currently in a flare up. She looked at me again and agreed that that wasnt a good idea, especially as the last time we tried graded exercise, I ended up with a serious flare up lasting over a year.

So I am stuffed. I can do nothing about this fatty liver. My weight just wont budge. My digestive issues means I cannot drop any more fibre from my diet.

Realistically, I think I am looking for emotional support, rather than suggestions which I cannot do. I know some on here think keto is the answer to most things, but I cant do keto. I just cant. I end up in all sorts of digestive trouble.

I still believe seroxat (an antidepressant), which made me put on 6 stones in 10 months two decades ago, damaged my liver. I could have had a fatty liver for decades, for all I know.

I have run out of the ability to juggle my several conditions, and I have another 12 months on the waiting list to see a counselor. I am not sure a counselor will help. I have fought and fought for 8 years, and I am sinking faster than I can bale out healthwise.

Sorry to hear about all your issues, did they diagnose NAFL?
When I had a fatty liver, they kept on repeating, 'don't drink'!
When eventually I convinced them I was non alcoholic, they were more helpful.

Because, I am in ketosis for most of the time, I now have no issues with a fatty liver, though I am still susceptible to the condition.

Having a fatty liver is not about not doing exercise,, even walking will help.

Best wishes

I have been wondering about introducing more than 1 egg a day into my diet. Each egg has about a quarter of the choiline I need daily, apparently???

Sorry, typing is awkward as I also sliced the top off my first finger of my left hand today, and I am left handed. I feel like one of those cartoon characters who have a grey cloud followinf them around.

Do you eat fruit?
I only ask because since diagnosis my cholesterol dropped to normal. But prior to Xmas I reintroduced it albeit not a lot and my cholesterol increased.

just wondering if that is a possibility and maybe something that could be changed.

otherwise big big hugs!!

Can I help you with a big fat bear hug? I didn't have any practical suggestions anyway, so good thing you aren't looking for them at the moment.
Wish I could bring you the hug in person, you sound like you feel a bit lost and lonely, and I hope things will look a bit sunnier for you shortly, even if the circumstances are rubbish.

Sending hugs from me and my various animals- including my cats and dogs.

I am so sorry that you are feeling so down- it really doesn't sound like your GP thinks before he/she speaks.

You are such an inspiration to me and I 'm sure others on this site- I really admire your persistence in the face of what seems to have been a million challenges.

So my real sympathy and many hugs- take care of yourself and know that you are someone who makes a difference- reading your posts over the past has been really helpful top me and I thank you for them.

Hugs.

Thinking of you and sending you hugs sounds very difficult.
Good idea to experiment with more eggs though I have some very very eggy days and know they are good. I’ve been known to have two boiled eggs for breakfast and then a frittata for dinner ie another two eggs wortha try! And they are delish meanwhile hugs on the way take care during difficult times

Very sorry to hear you are having a hard time. I understand that you have to be careful what you eat, but leafy greens can help a fatty liver. Also is intermittent fasting feasible? This would not involve losing weight, as you would eat the same number of calories, but in a smaller eating window. That can force the liver to use its glycogen / fat reserves. In the end, you can only do your best, and even if you can't manage as much control as you'd like - you are doing a lot better than those that ignore their condition.

I'd highly recommend the blog of George Henderson who is a self-taught expert on liver health because he was researching for his own solutions to Hep-C. He's so good at research that he's now employed by Prof Grant Schofield as a research assistant at the University of Technology in Auckland. Here's his blogpost on fatty liver - and yes, you're on the right track with eggs and choline. The quality and type of fats are also hugely important. I don't think a low carb diet necessarily has to be ketogenic to be helpful and there doesn't have to be any limit on fibrous veggies if you believe they help your digestion.

I’m in no way trying to convince you to go keto. But I am curious about its limitations. It sounds like you e tried it previously. Can I ask the problems you have with it? Do you know what causes them?

Another big hug sent your way. We all need them from time to time.

Due to unpleasant exchanges with other posters, and me defending my choices and reasons, I dont feel able to go into details. By the way, why have you clicked my original post as creative? I am telling the truth.

Sending a kings ransom in hugs to you right now @lucylocket61 as you have been such an inspiration for me and others. It’s such a horrific shame that you have been knocked back again by something like this and I truly do wish I could do something to help. I think personally you are on the right track with choline and eggs without needing to go Keto in any capacity, could there also perhaps be an issue with your absorption of choline? A possible route to look at but for now? I’d increase the eggs a little and see if that makes a difference.

Other than that, sending so much love and best wishes to you and yours!

I am sorry, I know how hard it can be when yet another chronic condition gets added it.
The ill health grief cycle goes round like a hyperactive hamster n a wheel.
I was diagnosed with asthma in my late 40s but I'd had occasional issues since my teens so it wasn't a big surprise. I find singing helped, as my lung function is better than most people my age although on the other hand when I feel breathless and my chest is tight my test results look 'too good'!

But like some of the other newer members I was wondering if you would struggle with low carb (not strict keto) as this fixed my fatty liver. Partly due to the weight loss - various low calorie diets in the past never helped as much.

it has got to be tough to balance various health issues.

but I have to ask, why not go below 1,200 calories? Seems like a referral to an endocrinologist with strong nutritional credentials wouldn’t hurt. If you are maintaining weight at 1,200 calories, then you need less to lose weight. It is what it is. Stopping at “can’t go under 1,200” seems the medical advice equivalent of “eat the generally recommended plate.” Your doctor is stopping at a cop-out everything he/she can suggest you can legitimately counter. That’s what specialists are for.

The 1,200 cal lower limit seems to be the minimum to get all nutrients in from what I read. So, supplements. I dunno, I did 700 calories for 16 weeks, plus the diet with 1,200 weekdays plus 500 per day weekends for 6 months with no ill effects. The 1,200 calorie minimum for women is longer term nutritent deficiencies.

Though the fact that your BG levels are good doesn’t prove what you are or are not eating, so not sure why you are connecting that.

one thing is true: the only treatment for fatty liver is weight loss.
