Hi all! My name is Viv and I’ve just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a month ago. I’m 39 turning 40 this April and have a BMI of 27. Both my parents passed away of Diabetes and my eldest brother 2 years ago also due to complications of diabetes, he was only 56. Two of my other brothers have diabetes too. I’ve been really struggling to keep my sugar within normal range as I just love my sugary and high carb foods. I’m in 2g metformin a day but it seems it’s not working. I’ve been trying hard to cut down on my carbs and sugar but some days are really difficult. I think I’m addicted to these types of food lol. My HBA1C was 92 and my liver function test is around the 80’s as well. I’m feeling really down about my condition and hopeless.
 
Hi Viv ... It's a struggle but I am sure you can do it ... remember that all our tastes (except mother's milk) are acquired tastes and what you have acquired, you can un-acquire ... all it takes is will power. Raising enough will power depends on motivation and with your sad family history I am sure you have plenty of motivation, so when you find it hard to resist that sugary cake you can use your personal experience of loss to help you quell the urge,
Sugar by the way is addictive (so are fats) which is why we get so much in processed foods ... it is designed to make us addictive and thus sell more. Though it is not an opiate, recent experiments show that sugar stimulates the release of opiates within the brain and these opiates, in turn, trigger the release of dopamine which generates feelings of pleasure ... in much the same way (but not as strongly) as recreational drugs such as alcohol, cocaine, and tobacco. The craving for sugar goes beyond sugar itself and can appear as a craving for foods that release sugar into the bloodstream quickly (foods with a high GI) such as biscuits, crackers, white bread and potatoes.
Best of luck ... it is a mighty struggle but one you can win and the rewards are worth it ... believe me, if you stick at it, the craving will eventually disappear

I live in Sydney Australia, about 15mins from beach; play tennis, swim & gym with yoga; ex musician play piano & woodwinds; studied music, religion & science; married 1 son 2 steppies; fav TV programmes Get Smart, F Troop, Nature docos, Travel docos; travelled to a lot of places last trip to West Coast USA & Canada / Alaska; planned trip to Japan late March; fav city probably Sydney because of harbour & beaches, Vancouver close 2nd, love the Canucks; retired but still practising science & music.
Diagnosed Type 1 IDD at 17yrs 1964, life expectancy then about 40-50 yo, still going 56yrs later; Diabetes Meds are Humalog before each meal & Lantus, use a Freestyle Optimum Neo which i feel very comfortable with accuracy of readings, have a Freestyle Libre on loan for 14 days ending tommorow, accuracy of this was very similar to blood readings for 10 days, after that some highly variable readings from the Freestyle up to 20% difference to blood meter, overall about 10% lower than blood meter check.

I wouldn't say 'study', but I have a keen interest in archaeology - primarily stone circles and standing stones.

I'm very conscientious when I apply myself to a project (work or personal).

I tend to see things as black or white. Shades of grey don't sit easily with me. When I was diagnosed with T2, I immediately cut out all carbs. I've relaxed that a little now with the aid of self-monitoring.

I'm not diabetic and want to learn how to follow a low carb diet, before I get diabetic.
I've lost 5lb already and have bought diabetes uk carbs and calorie counter book,but haven't really looked at it yet.Already been using Livelife half the carbs bread for some time.Have to buy ten loaves at a time and freeze ( the bread )
My partner often works away and I have to then cook for one, which is a pain, so I generally cook for two, and have the other portion the next day.
I know the benefits of batch cooking, but I prefer the taste of freshly cooked food.

Is there any uk food subscription service where you can choose low carb meals?

Trying to eat healthier and take more exercise.
Have a couple of questions please.
Is there an app you can use to count carbs ?
Can you point me in the direction of the right threads to look at for newbies
