Feeling dreadfully dull here in comparison. A bit of yoga followed by some back stretches and a toenail polish managed to fill most of the morning. A sudden mini migraine meant i slept the afternoon away, then we did an online quiz in aid of a local church. First time I'd used "a breakout room" on zoom which was interesting as I'm starting to work on some ideas to celebrate hubbys milestone birthday after Christmas and am assuming it will be a virtual birthday

Not at all dull! Glad it was a mini migraine and a hug anyway! Early birthday wishes for your DH!

Did a dash to Lidl today for the bits Asda didn't deliver and a couple of things from the Middle aisle... and got them all including the following bargains
Almonds currently £1.29 for 200g
Own label almond butter £1.69
Sandwich toaster that does waffles and grills £15.99
3 decent sized, good fit cake tins £3.99 (had been looking online elsewhere at £17.99 up)
2 silicone baking mats £3.99

Didn't want to clog up main thread so Rambling Sid Rumpole here - cordwangle oh me derrios. Needed to jump start Ye olde Worlde (2004) Range Rover which I desperately want to keep going. So we went on a 2 hr drive, bought 2 wreaths and laid one on my parents grave. Confirmed my tacit knowledge that where we came from is much more "aspirational." Didn't want to use heating to drain battery so v, v cold. Bought some warm? Costa coffee - not sure it had the cream or SF caramel I shouted into the order thingy but Libre seemed ok with it. @OzBlossom , I use Monin sugar free caramel syrup which is what should have been in the Costa coffee.. @Choosehappy , fattbars looked interesting - I never learn so I bought the trial pack - what could possibly go wrong?. Heck sausages really aren’t for me nor are Cumberland but plain Waitrose 1 are ok. Me too on nut butters @maglil55 . I started testing/scanning again - fist time since September 2nd - it sure is a way to ruin pleasure in food. Numbers are ok but what a pain that is. Hug for mini migraine @MrsA2 . @DJC3 Bill likes butter apparently.

Amazing bargains I went to Lidl a week or so ago and loved browsing in middle aisle especially with all other shops shut! I spotted and bought their good price almond butter too and stocked up.

I only like nut butters mixed into recipes eg add to home made truffles and gives a great nutty truffle taste but I’m with you and @maglil55 i can’t envisage eating it off a spoon. I’m not into heck sausages either I’m into the Waitrose 1 version and love their chipolatas.
Don’t know if it was caused by the blood loss when I applied my sensor - maybe it clogged it up! But I’ve got another crazy low sensor it’s often registering just lo overnight and a 2 or a 3 throughout the day even after food or stress so it’s another dodgy one a 2.3 on the sensor is a 5.1 on a standard strip so looks like another Abbott phone call. Thought it may sort but hasn’t, hope your sensor is better than mine!

You are obviously a lady of impeccable taste. If it has Waitrose 1 as a prefix I'm ok with it, even their 90% chocolate. Lidl and Aldi are fine but the places or areas of places they are scare the Beejesus out of me. Hug for blood loss and dodgy sensor. I estimate <70% of my sensors have worked properly but Abbott are very good at replacing them -I think they have lots of experience..

@ianpspurs your Range Rover is but a babe. We are keeping the 1984 Volvo 240 in storage for a rainy day. Drives fine once you get it started. Maybe all you need is a battery? Or alternator? I'd think if you drove it that long you wouldn't need to worry about battery use while engine running at speed. And-- I sincerely thought all heat was engine heat re-purposed! Why my cars never put out heat until the engine is warm!
To each "their" own (that is correct now in American grammar) re almond butter. Why go to the bother of making truffles when you can have plain almond butter?
Very funny video shown at lunch today of 8-mo grandson crawling after the little flat-disk robot vacuum, giggling and crowing all the time. As good as the dogs at his other grandparents' house. He cannot have a dog-- his mother developed a severe allergy to her own pets over her first semester away at college.

Hope you like them! I find them quite satisfying, I don’t eat any sugar at all so I have enjoyed a sweet and healthy treat!

I love the sound of that video. Grandchildren are such a blessing but one does so enjoy handing them over, safe. sound, clean, fed and watered, to ma and pa. Sleepover mornings with grandson were magical, an 18 month old asking for chamomile tea and children's TV always made me chuckle. The Ancient RR needs work to pass the MOT test (State inspection?) before the end of December and one part of that takes place today hence the need to ensure it started and runs. If the specialists reassure me that repairs can be effected for a cost effective price I shall have them done and rejoice exceedingly. I fear I am too fond of that car. Would it be legal to marry one's car in any state?

Since all this pandemic started, our village has become quite resourceful, in terms of continuation of celebrations and important events.

For Halloween, gardens were decorated - sooooo many min-grave/ghoul yards, with partially buried skeletons, to pumpkin displays to the rather disturbing "ghost" suspended in a tree, which caused enormous alarm, when someone, encountering walking their dog, thought it was a person suspended by their neck. Not at all as intended on that one!

On the night, many people were leaving trick or treat treats at the ends of their drives, for those children walking (with parents) through the village, to find pumpkins.

Remembrance Sunday was quite special too, although in different ways.

Now thoughts are turning to the festive season. This was posted on our village facebook page, and it seems, yet again, to be something simple that can be either taken on face value, or can be an opportunity to talk about the deeper Christmas messages.

This is an initiative of the local churches.

My diary just reminded me this time last year I had just finished chemo and we were in Cyprus - end of chemo celebration. Every morning I was in the gym by 7.00 am, twice with a PT, then swim, sauna and shower. Breakfast by the pool then lying by the pool or sightseeing until another gym session before evening meal. Some of you will recall how the staff went out of their way to provide me with LC food and added keto diet training to their programme. We should have been going there again soon. Different this year but I've had another year so all good.

@ianpspurs cars! I grew up in "Betsy", short for Queen Elizabeth, a regal 1954 Packard Deluxe. Eventually we owned 3 Packards, Betsy, one converted to a farm truck, and one for parts. MrZF and I were an "old Volvo" family until 2017 when my third wagon was totalled and there were no more old wagons to be found. So yes, perhaps not marry, but certainly legally adopt. I like my current (old--2005) Toyota Sienna, but it's just not the same as the 86 Volvo wagon which I bought with 100,000 miles on it and drove for 19 years.

Lights seem to be going up early this year. I still have a window-seat full of orange harvest/fall lights, so can certainly wait until Thanksgiving weekend ti start Christmas, as is traditional. We will have to have a real tree this year. Our last one was two houses ago, in a room with 12' cathedral ceiling. The last year we were there, I cut a huge 12' tall white pine that spread to 10' across and consumed all our lights and then some. How can we top that, right?

I'm certain that if any other community chose to do something similar, the local churches would be delighted. FOr all I know, they could have found it elsewhere themselves.

This is a nice little community, with the churches very much at the epicentre, whether one has a religious leaning or not. For example, as well as a place of worship, the village C0fE church is also a drop off point for the food bank, so there are always comings and goings, and they always take part in any of the community initiatives taking place. I wish I had taken some photos of their Halloween offering. Somebody somewhere has a sense of humour, and no, it wasn't in the least bit disrespectful to the church itself.

We too live in a village, but our church is some way outside the centre. Back when wheeled traffic came in (yes even before Volvos and Packards!) the carts had trouble going up the muddy hill the church stood on, so they started skirting the hill so now the village green, inns and pond to water the horses are a good half a mile from the church. Interesting (mildly), but topical because they have decided this year to try to line the path to the church with homemade stars, but at 10cm each its going to take an awful lot of stars! I'm not sure they realise just how many. Im thinking 10,000 maybe. I've ordered the makings of 40 on Amazon today to do my bit.

At one time, the occasion for any celebration here was marked with a ceilidh. Normally a ceilidh is just a visit - not a party, except on those special occasions when there was to be a wedding or some other special event, but under the influence of the mainland and TV the ceilidh has become a much bigger, more active event. It usually involves drink and food (at one time, the church here banned the drinking of tea and preferred people to drink alcohol, tea being "the devil's brew"). Now we have children's parties as well which are similar to children's parties all over the place. However, the church does not condone ceilidhs, especially not at Christmas. Church events are somber, the favourite one being Easter when everyone can mourn as they commemorate the death of Christ. Here funerals are a favoured pass-time - everyone enjoys a good funeral. Even the wakes are somber, unlike the famed Irish wakes.

This, of course, has all changed this year. No wakes, or chances to enjoy a good funeral, no ceilidhs, no children's parties. The schools, these days, do acknowledge Christmas and use it for story-telling and craft opportunities. But it is not so long ago that a certain highland headmaster caused a huge row because he would not allow a Christmas tree or decorations in his school - these things were pagan, after all.

Christmas is becoming a children's festival, pure and simple, here, as it is on other parts of the world. The church really doesn't take much notice of it. In past years we have seen some attempt at lighting up the centre of Stornoway for Christmas - not sure what will happen this year. Some houses put up Christmas lights, but not very many really. That, I'm sure will happen again this year.

It's all a bit grim, really, compared to the southern Christmases I grew up with. But, at least, the purpose of the festival is acknowledged, whereas it is forgotten in many other places. At least Em, and her classmates, are aware of what Christmas is about.

Have been working on the guinea pig pen today. Their old shelter wasn't too good and I was afraid the bottom of the first floor would fall out, crushing unsuspecting guinea pigs underneath, so it was time for a new shelter.

Things are never as easy as they seem, especially when using second hand stuff which doesn't fit as planned and the breaking down the old shelter is much harder than expected and the charger for the cordless drill is nowhere to be found and you also find out you really need to get hay for your goats today.
Anyway, the guinea pigs will have to make do with the second shelter tonight, which is too small really for 14 piggies.

Funny how you get much more worn out when things don't go as planned.

At least I got 4 bales of hay (the other 3 are in the back of my car) and happy goats

(Don't worry, my house is the one on the right in the top picture so it was perfectly safe. More or less.)

looking at your photos I had a chuckle as looked like you’d just driven through a haystack! Good luck with the building project sounds like serious rest needed tonight before you get back to it hope it goes better tomorrow

@Antje77 my son in law built a ‘guinea pig palace’ for my granddaughters GPs over the summer - clever lad. ( photo attached if I remember)
@zauberflote we had a couple of old Volvo workhorses I loved them, the last was a fairly ancient 740 big and comfy enough for us, 3 children and our collie to travel many many miles in. It’s the only car I’ve ever been attached to.
@ianpspurs the year has flown past - it may not have been a brilliant year in many respects but we are all still here and that beats the alternative. Happy 1 yr anniversary and may you have many more.
@DCUKMod I like the angels idea although I’m not very religious. The church in our village has also opened its doors to me and a a couple of others that run the community larder/ food bank. We were so grateful as we’d been operating from the pub car park all year and we were getting wet and cold as the weather turned.
