What was your fasting blood glucose? (full on chat)

@ianpspurs re the question of LC eating with family. I have been lucky from day one of diagnosis. Before lockdown when weekly meals with friends and family were allowed, all family and friends went out of there way to ensure I had LC meals served and no one jibed about me turning down High Carb treats. Kathy, Mrs MC, still likes her carbs but is certainly eating less and weight loss she sees as the benifit at less than 8 stone. All in all the change in diet does not seem to have caused any big problems for myself with friends or family.

Eating out was not a problem either I just asked for salad or dishes of green Veg instead of potatoes rice or pasta, can't think of once where that became an issue.

Conclusion : managing LC diet not really a problem, managing T2D is however another matter. Then just when I think I understanding how BG is going to react to certain foods Dracula proves me wrong. :)

We had a morning out as far as Powter How near Bass Lake, heard a Chiffchaff or at least the duchess did, my old ears are clapped out! She must be paying me back for not hearing the Cuckoo I found last Spring! :)

Stopped at Beck Wythop on A66 and cars filled the parking area so I couldn't look at the Lake to see if there were any Sand Martins or scrutinise Skiddaw and Ullock Pike.
Everyone had gone off walking in the woods and fells behind Thornthwaite forest. Dont know what it will be like when Doris takes the shackles off!

Came back home via Overwater and Ulldale Common. Not pristine clarity today but ok.
Will post a few pictures tomorrow of my favourite mountain.
Snow down to 1700 feet on Caldbeck Fells.

Thanks @Muddy Cyclist and you will be fine with Dracula once again. As for high carb treats the only issue for me comes when grandchildren proffer them. All our boys and Julie are very mindful of how I eat but I am also mindful that I don't have the right to restrict their choices. I am happy to just drink tea while they eat or bring an lc snack. The major problem came early on when we tried "swaps" or mutations which suited neither me nor them. As far as possible I won't eat out again.

I have started another watercolour having been inspired by some Beech Woods I regularly Cycle through. These trees are very tall along the edge of a pine plantation, I like them best in late Spring with the canopy of new green leaves and Autumn with the red and golds. No leaves yet but their trunks are a beautiful silver, blue, green and purple, a spiritual place to Muddy Cycle ride through...
A4 watercolour, lots still to do will try and finish it Sunday....

Thanks Ian. My 3 Grandaughters, 5, 7 and 9 year olds all know exactly what I should not eat and if I take anything considered out of bounds they very quickly chide me. :) They do have a rather disturbing desire to see me feed Dracula,of course I do turn on the drama and they all think I am really brave.

Wee selection of some of today's adventures. I have a prototype phone which I'm pre-release testing so I'm using all the settings to see how they fare on image rendering. I helped develop it, so I'm very VERY critical

Fish dinner - straight out the Pacific al fresco which was wonderful and now back in my pen at the hotel. Sitting outside with a freezing cold beer (I know, liquid bread) after a great day with Wan the honourary Taiwanese Scot...He has all of our work going forward so the next 10 coming through are all his And very well deserved.

Work day tomorrow from my room - video calls lined up and I can now walk out for lunch, an hour or two taking it all in...sampling some street food and dodging the storms!

22.20 here - another bedtime approaches. The city alive under me, I'm tired but for once, not on edge BG 2½ hours after eating 5.5...this was the justification for the lager for the absence of doubt.

Saturday afternoon will turn into evening and night for all of you...so from 6060 miles distant, have a brill Saturday and enjoy :)

Great pics, was that on the updated phone ?

Glorious depth of colours and crisp.
Either way

Very much like. Cheers @BRSBRI .

I must have some cashews too - haven't had them in a while but do really like them and like them even more if they drop BS win win!
I am still diligently researching cashews. I had 5 cashews with breakfast but unfortunately they didn't drop BS at all this time. They were, however, absolutely delicious.

Snapsies - I feel exactly the same as you re: dracula fasting, I have not had a 5 in over 3 weeks now since I had my vaccine - whereas I was getting 5s and occasionally lower every morning before I had the vaccine - do you think it's related to the vaccine? - I do

Edited to add after rethinking - I have not been as active in last 3 weeks and have had more stress than usual so maybe not totally vaccine - possibly combo of 3 - Will I ever know exactly what happens with this woe or my body ...
I don't think we will ever know exactly what happens with this woe and our bodies.

Before I started on low carb I was eating a 'normal' diet and injecting insulin to cover the carbs. I would obsessively weigh my carbs and work out exactly how much insulin to inject. I used to get so frustrated that an identical meal and insulin on a different day would often give wildly different results. There was no logic to it.

A quick question. How many of you have a partners/family who can't eat the low carb way especially any swaps.? We tried some of the Diet Dr recipes way back and none of us would eat them, waste of time. I'm extreme in that I really only eat salad - lc hot food is a nightmare for me- except for Sunday's. Julie likes Sunday lunch and when there is no lockdown a family gathering for that event is as good as it gets for me now I don't play sport.

Lauren of Arabia, took the changes in her stride

But it be fair, like many others it seems, we had moved away from the traditional 'Meal Together'

Much like @Mrs T 123 , Lauren's an early bird riser, I'm more of a night owl

She'll have eaten well at work, and many nights she'll just have a small snack

I've been happy cooking since before I left home, many moons ago
But it was solid and basic, rather then fancy
Think spag bol, stir fries, etc.

Then mum & dad fell ill, so preparing food for them meant trying new dishes.

& Since DX I've upped it a bit more and Lauren's eaten most of what I've cooked at some point.
Some successes, a few fails

Cauli rice a winner, I personally don't rate it highly

Swede mash a winner, as was LC crackers and mug bread was an interesting experiment

Tried many of the more exotic recipes, AND mooched thru wholefoods looking for unobtanium like ingredients, amongst a world of foods I didn't know existed...but each experiment rarely seemed worth the effort.

For me, an egg bacon type breakfast perfect, Lauren likes her Greek yoghurt & fruits
So we share that.
Poached eggs now preferred ( got little 'pockets' to cook them in, so always perfect.

Steak, once I learned to cook it properly became a fav, lots of veggie a winner, salads too.
Beef, Chicken, lamb, but not so keen on pork and FISH is like Kryptonite..:yuck:

Leeks a surprise delight, as was avocado
double cream fruit low carb jellies make up rest of the meal range

Stephph had tried some and similar results to Lauren, but she's rarely been here, boyfriends & moved out not long after DX.

Overall, it's not impacted us too much
At home, I'll balance out any shared meals with what I can have v what she likes..not been an issue yet.

Same eating out.
I'll avoid the carby stuff, but I'm no saint.

Chocolate however is a contentious issue.

She'll eat my darker stuff in one sitting and prefers it to normal
And snaffles the biltong and meat/cheeses kept for treats.:arghh:

Bread still on menu but limited and Hilo
Crackers make up gap, 5g
Take aways dropped off
Pizza not so regular but curries were.

Just better picks and none of the rice's or breads, so ok but not so nice as before, so rarely ordered.

She still has the ice cream in freezer, and her puddings, but they've never really interested me, much.

All in we've coped pretty well.
Socially I just avoid, tell family why, had discussions on why but no real insist moments.

Now it's easier.
Real foods, that look like what they are.
Cooked by me.
Basic, tasty and very filling .

I decided right at the beginning that I wouldn't follow any low carb recipes and would eat the same meals as Mr K but minus the potatoes, rice and pasta.

We tweaked our favourite foods. For curry we switched to the lowest carb Thai curry sauce we could find and I was careful not to eat too much sauce. Mr K spiralised cougette for me, tried it himself and declared that rice and pasta was tasteless filler foods and my spiralised courgette was far more tasty.

If he wants potatoes he will cook them but often doesn't bother. That started him on a voyage of discovery - trying out tasty recipes from various well known chefs and cooks that are not based on high carb foods. He has been brilliant.

Absolutely incredible journey that you have managed to ditch the insulin and now in total control /remission - well done you!

Thank you. I was really lucky that I found this site and have found the support on this this thread so helpful. Also, it is incredibly reassuring just knowing that I am not the only person who finds that the way our T2D bodies work is very confusing at times.

Yes that's what I find really interesting is that even the most experienced people on insulin say it can be guesswork for them at times just as you pointed out earlier, at different times and even different days or even seasons etc ...

So finally Light at the end of a very long tunnel.

After my rallying call to myself this morning.
i had a lazy day

(Lots of activities this last week or so, up and decorating from 9 am, honest)

So i began my return to a late night walk
it was a jog previously, but I'm being sensible.

Out for about an hour, only circuits of our local blocks, but still a few steps short of 3k
happy with that.

tested when in, knowing exercise can put BG up,
it was 8.4

had a late dinner.
(did i say i had had a VERY lazy day ;).)
steak, mushrooms & leek, very nice.

tested 2 hours after, my first in a loo-oo-oong time to be anywhere near acceptable.

only 6 point blooming 2.

.6.2..after food..ME.....:wideyed:

yeee haww.:D

if i keep that up,

I'll be looking to upstick here in Bond Plateau,
and go set up camp once again back on McGarrett plains

living the Big 5 O easy life
basking in that Low Carb Sunshine
& taking regular dips in that Low BG lake,
i hear so much about....:headphone:

hope your end of the day is a pleasing as mine.

see ya all Manana :)

Woken up by thunder in the very wee small hours. Now a mottled cloudy sky with sunshine streaming on occasion with a massive and steamy 31°C.

FBG this morning was yet another higher than normal 6.9mmol. Jumped on the static bike in the bathroom and cycled 14 miles listening to Dall'Abaco and then feasted on Greek yoghurt, berries, poached eggs, smoked salmon, wilted spinach and a large oversized bucket of a cafetière of coffee.

Heading out looking for a bar/local joint for lunch to grab a takeaway and continue working on the terrace...before exploring seeking dinner or maybe just have a terrace meal with a book...

Happy Sunday all and hope mister Sandman delivered nice deep sleep for a while.

Here's a lucky shot. Very wee small hours as I was playing with the photo contraption. boom.jpg

Good stuff! Your steak sounds yum

I find diabetes a mysterious beast. So much affects it and even going to bed with a sound BG level doesn't mean the following morning is going to be stellar as I have found out this extended trip. And I don't take insulin - a simple carb intolerant T2DM. Not sure how T1s manage. **respect**

Stress and new routines have a dreadful negative affect on my BG I've found whereas in quarantine or working from home where I could manage my body alchemy tuning, everything was steady. But I'm very new to this having had a formal diagnosis in January this year, although in retrospect all the warning signs were there and ignored/discounted

The neuropathy in my left foot - left big toe failing the tickle test seems to be slowly getting better...which is a relief too.

This diabetes melarkee is a long haul...

Great site, good advice from many who are experienced in self management of this complex condition where we can all learn something which we can adapt for ourselves...
