Blurry vision caused by dry eyes ? Very worried please help

I have not been diagnosed with diabetes...
Recently I have blurry vision that fluctuates throughout the day....
I noticed if my eyes do tear up which is very seldom the tears improve my vision .
But the tears do sting my eyes....
I'm very worried please help
 
Welcome to the forums @WorriedBilly. Though diabetes can cause issues with vision so can many other things. I think your first port of call on this one should be your GP and/or an optician.

I have a visit with the gp Thursday
I have been on keto diet for about 2 weeks
Very low to no carbs....
My symptoms are frequent urination, blurry vision on and off, weight loss etc
Please any and all help appreciated
 
Hi, welcome

Although a very low carb diet is terrific for lowering blood sugar levels, your doctor may see falsely low numbers, If it were me, I would eat a reasonable amount of carbs today so your blood sugar reflects what’s going on, I’m sure the doctor will do a blood test measuring the last three months (Hba1c) but if not, request it, tell the doctor you have been eating like this and explain why, not all doctors understand, believe it or not.

Fluctuating blurriness, especially when it's solved simply with tears, which then in turn tend to be stingy... Could well be blepharitis, which could be helped with warm wash cloths on the eyes for a few minutes twice a day, and maybe artificial tears. See? Could be something absolutely harmless rather than diabetes. But yes, eyesight can fluctuate when someone has T2. Might not have been a good idea to start lowering your carb intake before getting tests done, so be sure to ask for a HbA1c, as it'll be an average of the past 3 months, rather than a snapshot of what your sugars are up to right then.

Considering your sum total of symptoms, you're wise to seek medical help. And when you have a diagnosis, one way or the other, please do let us know how you've got on. If T2, we'd be able to help get you sorted. It is actually very manageable and does not have to be a progressive condition, alright?

I have read that lots of people were diagnosed as type 1 later in life
 
Any chance you have had Covid19? I had dry eyes and blurred vision for several months after I had Covid.
 
Something like that I would probably go and talk to a pharmacist, as you're going to the GP tomorrow you might not think it worth the effort, but any half decent pharmacist will be able to offer you some advice.

For what it's worth, I can't wear contact lenses as my eyes just dry up completely and get very sore very quickly if I try. I'm not currently diagnosed with any kind of diabetes. But in your position I'd definitely go and talk to someone who will be able to offer advice quickly.

Unexpected weightloss is always something to contact a doctor about. Keep in mind they often know little about adult onset type 1 (for some reason it is still assumed T1 is limited to children), so if you suspect something like that, you might want to request a c-peptide and GAD test if they deem you a diabetic... Type isn't usually tested for because an educated guess is cheaper, and not all docs know that weight loss is more a T1 than a T2 thing.

You're better off getting yourself to your appointment rather than thinking of what all it could be. Something is going on, yes, but there's no way to tell what it is unless you get tests done. It's better to have answers and act on them, than just hazard guesses and stress out over the what-ifs. And if you've been eating less carbs you're likely to lose even more weight. So... Get answers first, THEN devise a plan for your future health. We'll help if we can, so you're not alone, alright?

I had very similar symptoms to you as my sugar levels improved. I had to also get 2 different strengths of reading glasses. This could be a good sign that you are driving the glucose out of your system, as diabetes bulges the lenses of the eyes. Once the sugars start to come out, the lense settles and the symptoms you describe I had.

Since then I have not had any problems and have not needed reading glasses.

Me too Billy! It's been with me right since I started low carbing almost two months ago, and yet I don't have a cold or anything. I have put it down to the changes taking place in my body right now x
 
Please see a doctor. Even if it is T2 don't try to fix yourself until you have a firm diagnosis, you may not get the relevant annual check-ups that you are entitled to (like screening for diabetic retinopathy, foot checks etc.) In the UK you need 2 blood tests confirming that you are diabetic before you are eligible for these checks.

I have dry eyes.
Confirmed by referral to a specialist.
It comes and goes and when I remember I use a hot facecloth in the shower each morning to warm my eyelids.
I did have saline solution but I found I forgot to use it.

I don't think it is directly related to my diabetes, but could be wrong.

The other symptoms you describe could be related to diabetes and should be checked out as soon as possible.
 
I had extremely dry/blurry eyes after diagnosis as soon as I went low carb, went away after two weeks. Also went to see an ophthalmologist to make sure it was nothing serious. All was well.
