Lost interest!!!!

Hi I am very new to this site and just wanting to ask some questions.. So I have been living with diabetes 29 years. Starting with the old blood testing equipment to now been on the pump and freestyle libre. I'm changing pumps in march unsure of what's available through the NHS.
Having it for so long I have become un interested with my diabetes and not really bothering. Has anyone else come across this before?
I feel like I am unsure of what to do to become more botherd and Interested and look after myself.
I find I never put diabetes first. My job is very hands on and busy.
Any advise hints,tips new tech to help me out would me much appreciated.

Hi Simon,

Welcome to the forum.

I don’t pump. But I do use a Libre.

The not bothering is a form of “burn out.” I’ve had T1 man & boy myself.
What I have done with my Libre set up is turn it into a CGM set up. Watch & phone? (At a glance readout.) easier to engage with a flick of the wrist..

I can appreciate dodgy BGs can have a negative emotional effect? Not every day can be perfect, but staying in range can help.

Hi @simonpickering91 and welcome to the forums.

I've been diabetic for 52 years so started before glucometers. I've been through a number of periods of so called diabetes burnout, fatigue, whatever you want to call it.

I do find that the modern technology (I have a dexcom because I became allergic to the libre) helps with burnout, because I immediately see when I'm out of range and so can microdose to get back into range. I also find a cgm invaluable because in the past I've lost hypo awareness when I've had too many hypos and a cgm allows me to prevent hypos.

Not a pump user yet but am thinking about it, I have issues with varying basal rates (lantus needs) so quite fancy the idea of some sort of feedback loop which could cope with overnight highs/lows.

Albeit they are not always perfect, cgms are a massive boon to diabetic control and I am currently having a sobering week without (dexcom transmitter failed and I won't get a new one till I get back home at the weekend).

I also find these forums invaluable in terms of asking all questions diabetic. (I'll have a long post before I next see my clinic so I know all the right questions to ask).

why do you think you should put diabetes first if your bg is not 30 or even 15? There are many more important things in life. If you allow yourself to relax a little and restore the resources once in almost 30 years, nothing bad will happen. Diabetes is of course important, but the psyche also needs to be protected, constant hypercontrol is not good

libre is a cool thing, it takes some of the hypercontrol on itself

my diabetes is 18 years old ;) He's already a big boy
 
Thanks for all your replies... I havnt seen a consultant for more than 2 years now with COVID. I used to have a really nice diabetic nurse who I saw weekly that got my diabetes back on track and gave me confidence with it. However she retired and no one took this role on.

The freestyle is working well. However I seem to be up and down and never have a straight curve.

I feel I need to go right back to basics and start fresh again. I rebelled when I was 18 and seem to not got back on track since then.
