Blood sugars this morning were 4.7 out came the steam driven sliderule, teabag reading mug and a finger held in the air to calculate my mornings insulin dosage. Doseage arrived at and administered.

I’ve read a little on this thread this morning on the english language, usage and correct use of punctuation.
As regular readers of my musings will no, me me’s and myself have know understanding of the use of punctuation, but like many off you I really like the way you can play games with the written language and if you want two circumvent the auto censor programming in this site. Of course me, me’s and myself would never do this, wink wink.
Just for information my preference was and is mathematics and physics rather than the obscure nuances of semi colons, colons, oh bowels to it all.

Morning all on the Feast of St Simon and St Jude. I had my feast yesterday on our 39th wedding anniversary. Ate in a 16th century coaching Inn owned by the Guinness family - surprisingly called the Guinness Arms. It is in Icklingham, Suffolk.The swordfish was succulent and who knew frozen grapes with one's cheese is now very much a thing? @lindisfel hug for the tiredness but the spoons concept sounds a good idea. @SlimLizzy hug for the worry over your mum. @dunelm I didn't thank you for sharing the art yesterday so thank you for that and today's. Enjoy the time with the grandchildren. @Krystyna23040 hugs for you both but good news that the sebaceous cyst didn't require an operation - two long stories connected to those.. What with the meal, Spurs winning and England winning the rugby, part 1 of the MRI results (head) all clear yesterday worked out well for me - thanks be to God. Enjoy your day.

Yes, it can be fun, playing with words - don't have the wit for it myself, but fun to see others do it. You have to know the rules in order to break them though. Bothers me that many don't actually know or understand the rules of how languages work - even their own. But I guess my inability to use numbers very efficiently bothers some others.

I like Neil's way of thinking but recognise context is all. Language usage doesn't bug me that much. Halloween as it has become is a whole other matter. Some big differences in family P. The boys know my thoughts - I think they felt hard done by as children although they remember a sleep over in the church as a good alternative.

All Saints' Eve seems to be a reasonable tradition - a time for deliberately remembering those we have lost. The Hallowe'en we see so much of now is another matter and comes from a pre-Christian tradition. No harm in celebrating an old religion, if you want, of course, but I do regret that it, like the Christian festivals has been so devalued and become little more than a commercial festival, for some (most?) people and mainly for the benefit of producers and sellers of tat. I did have a friend who was not a member of any church who said: "I might not believe in the religion, but I don't see why I shouldn't enjoy all the good things of the season at Christmas, Diwali, Ede - whatever." Of course, she was right. But, as I've already said once today - I'm an old stick-in-the-mud and these festivals are a time of quiet thoughtfulness for me. Just as well Neil goes along with that.

I believe Em is appearing as a skeleton as well. Still don't know if she's going out and about, or just to a party. Today she and her niece (almost 11 years old) are decorating her new "art studio". Her big brother has left home and gone to find work on the mainland (he will be living with his elder brother and wife meantime) so his bedroom is being given over to Em to set up her easel and paints etc. First though, the walls have to be repainted. However, I imagine the floor and ceiling will also be decorated either by accident or deliberately, as will the girls (either by accident or deliberately) including Em's 3 year old niece who will be keen to lend a hand. Mayhem will ensue, I suspect. Then, when the fun is over, Em and Alistair will finish the job off properly - after the 2 nieces have been taken home.

Some people are good at Maths, Physics, Music Languages, and pretty much everything apart from art. But not me.

I'm into freedom of thought and belief. Some of those older religions have a lot to teach us, I have to acknowledge. If someone wants to be a Shaman, a Druid, a Hindu, a Christian, a Witch, who am I do say they can't? As long as they don't harm anyone else or try to force their views on anyone else, it's up to them. I have friends from several other faiths but none of them have ever tried to force their view on me (oh wait a minute - that is other than the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormons but mostly they've learned not to bother). Nor would I ever try to force my views on them. I manage to live quite happily with Neil, who has atheistic views. he respects my choices and I respect his.

I'm sure there is.

Some people are good at pretty well everything including art - Neil for one.

However, I am not one of them. I can cook, bake and draw reasonably well. My English is pretty reasonable. French was OK but I've forgotten all the German I ever knew. And there is my limit. Good IQ score and all. It hasn't helped.

I know what is right and what is wrong. I know a fair bit of English - an old fashioned version to be sure which is why Modern usage bothers me but I resist the urge to put people right. I would never do anything deliberately to hurt any creature. And would try to prevent others being hurt, if I could. Other than that, I am pliable, despite a childhood surrounded by others who spouted all kinds of prejudicial views, which I managed not to learn from them. I am very grateful for my use of my (I believe) God given freedom of thought, even from an early age.

Thanks for the anniversary good wishes Derek. I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss Paphos, hadn't looked longingly at the weather and priced up a trip. After all, how long would it take one to deliberate over swapping breakfast in the sunshine poolside for grey, wet November in a very odd part of Britain?

Somehow, the worst kind of people seem to find their way into authority during wars. They are the ones who authorise atrocities and recruit the kind of people who will commit them. It's not the general population of any country who want to mete out the horrific treatment that is often seen in wars.

Although we were aware of the horrific behaviour of some Japanese during WW2, we found the Japanese people to be gentle, kind and considerate. In fact, very much like people in our own countries and I'm sure the same is true of Germans, Bosnians, and any other populations you could mention. And who was it who dropped the first atomic weapons? Was that an act of compassion?

Depends on the possibility of serious injury if you do. Can't be a Yes/No answer. Tom's youngest sister slipped and broke her ankle in her bathroom. Her daughters came to her aid but when they phoned for help, they were told that, under no circumstances should she be picked up. She had to lay on the cold floor for 5 hours until an ambulance came to assist. It might have hurt her to lift her, but I do believe she should have been picked up and made more comfortable. However, I do see the reason for not lifting her. A friend slipped and fell on tghe ice in London a few years ago and passers-by came to his aid and lifted him up, which caused the damage to his spine to actually damage his spinal cord so that he never walked again. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

You're quite right. I didn't get the reference to working girls - didn't enter my mind. I get it now that you have explained it though. I did say I didn't have the wit for word games. Actually, now that I understand it, it's pretty funny.

It's a matter of supply and demand, I suppose. Or rather, demand and supply. I don't imagine that many of the girls involved particularly feel a commitment to a career in the sex industry. (There is a word I'm looking for, but due to my memory slippage, I can't think of it just now.)

Never mind my dainty southern English - I love the Liverpool speech. It is as warm and melodic as the majority of Liverpudlians and those from the surrounding areas. I have a couple of elderly friends from the Rochdale area and I love to listen to them speak as well. One declaims biblical texts so beautifully and the other (non Christian) loves to tell yarns from his vast experience of life (a really gentle, aged hippy who took off to travel the world in his early 20's and then lived on the road for years until his arthritis forced him to settle here on the Isle of Lewis). I could listen to them for hours.
