Spirits of Christmas past

I decided at the last minute make some Christmas cakes for my morris associates and family using the old recipe, which involves steeping the fruit in orange and lemon juice and a glass of Martini Bianco.
I was crying last night as I stirred up the bowl - the smell brought back memories of all the other Christmases I had done the same thing.
The colours and sounds of Christmas don't seem to have quite the same impact.

Times change, as do our lives, and some memories are more bitter-sweet than sweet. But you'll bring quite some joy with your home-made exquisite Christmas cakes, which'll make the tears (hopefully) worth it. Take it from someone who was in tears wrapping gifts, too.

I lost my Mum at Christmas 47 years ago. It does become easier and less painful. Slowly the memories became treasured more than sad but we still remember her everyone we use her carving knife. The colours and sounds of Christmas will come back to you xxx

It shakes us to the core sometimes, often when we are not expecting it, because, well, scent is one of the more primitive senses (along with touch) and rocks us to a standstill with the memories it evokes.

Hugs and empathy. Your cake is a symbol of your resilience as well as your history. It's a wonderful piece of Christmas that you have prepared for your guests.

How spooky! I found a can just last week dated 1999 and I too was taken on the memory train. I have to say though, it still did a cracking job of cleaning a baking tray.
