Roche Insight Pump

The cartridges for a pack of 5 (8ml total insulin) are £15.10 compared to a 10ml vile of insulin for £14.08.

So once again the NHS are going to pay more for less!!
But that all depends on usage and wastage. I'll be more economic if I can use a vial for 6 days, rather than the enforced 3 days in the CellNovo

First air bubbles in tube.. Less than 5 hrs of having the pump on with the cartridges that should give less airbubbles...

You come away with a big box and a handy zipped up size sort of lap top bag, so don't go on a bicycle!! Still, it was less than when 1st collecting combo pump.

Have sent photos of airbubbles to accuchek...

Nice pump and remote though..

Yes 100cm tubes are available... Yippee... Bit of faffing around though as they only available with 8mm cannula when you get the tube n cannula joined. But the separate 6mm cannulas can be interchanged on the 3rd day.. So not too bad...

That surprised me, as I had intended to charge every night. However, often I test at 3am and its always the first thing I do before even raising head from pillows.

Plus the fact that really the meter has to go upside down in the dreadful case it is supplied with... So to do a test it needs to come out of the case.. So this is pretty much going to wake me up, wheras before It was so quick I could easily go back to sleep.

Ref airbubbles... Which I have never been told before.....to check tubing if coming in from the cold.. As this always causes bubbles to appear from nowhere!! That I definitely will be doing (pumper 4 years and working outside, no one told me to check tubing for bubbles about an hour after when coming back in).

Accuchek very quick with their response to me as usual.

I was concerned that I was told that the pump was not classified as a loan one with a 4 year date set in it until it dies.. Just found out it has a life span of 1495 days..... So ur has been set up as a loan one. Hopefully this may make CCG's that don't want to, to have to upgrade after 4 years???

Also, found out some really good news for T1 kids today... My hosp is having all children on pumps if tgey want one.... So that is really a big improvement for accessibilty rather than gaving to wait tears and fight for them!!!

Latest....

Went up to 9 last night (2am) which is high for me.
Thought I would disconnect cannula and check insulin dripping through ok.

Do you think I could get the pump to 'unlock'.... No... I was pressing the two buttons quickly as told.. But no..

Gave up.. Did a correction and went back to sleep.

1st thing on waking.. Still in bed tried again to get pump to unlock... Nope...

Phoned Accuchek and spoke to my favourite man...

I wasn't doing the two buttons fast enough. Apparently there has been a few calls from users regarding this.

The two buttons literally have to be pressed very, very quickly.

I've mastered the technique now.. But there is definitely a technique and very quick speed needed to unlock the pump.

The screen on the handset is not so responsive as a touch screen on a phone. It is likened to that of a garmin.

So when trying to scroll through basal profiles to adjust them on the handset you can inadvertently touch wrongly and end up going into a setting instead of the screen scrolling up. You definitely need to push and scroll rather than swipe and scroll. Again the technique once really known is easy but its just getting used to it.

Still very impressed with it and it is good with being able to lag bolus's etc if needed..and also for being able to type in notes against a reading.

Ie today I guestimated a bolus for a cake whilst out, so I could type in the food I had and that it was guestimated....so thats good for next time.

Its also possible to set up special bolus's if needed. So for me I have quiche and salad 3 times a week.. So I can just type in quiche as this bolus and its there for that particular food that I eat so often.

Clever bit of equipment.. I don't think any other pump I have seen gives the user so much fine tuning.

Very clever bit of equipment..just getting used to the push and not touch screen for handset and the speed needed to unlock the pump...

Magic... Pure magic!!

I'm interested in the new Roche Insight; I have a question about the remote unit: how often do you have to charge it? I rarely have to change the battery in my current glucose meter, but understand it isn't doing as much work as the insight meter will. So is it going to be like a smart phone, needing charging every day or two? Or can you get away without charging for longer?

Because we have to leave the remote at school everyday we just plug it in at home when we're not using it, so we've never gone for a longer period than a few hours without charging it. I would imagine it's the same as a phone and its every few days, they did tell us during training I'm sure one us can remember what it was.

As far as we are aware to unlock the pump you do up, down up on the pump not press the two buttons this always unlocks it no problem for us.

Yes it is up and down but quicker than I was doing it. I know the rep told me it gad to be quick, but I didn't realise how quick! I know I'm not the only one, so don't feel quite so stupid!!

The AAA battery inside the pump lasts for about a week I was told, but I haven't got that far yet. As I have an excess of AAA batteries I did change it over with my insulin cartridge and set change today. Hiwever the battery is already flyctuating between 80 and 95% for some reason since putting a new one in.

The handset battery has only lasted me 33 hours before needing a recharge. This will be even less if you are new to a pump as you will be testing and altering a lot more than me.

Has anybody used a lag bolus? I did earlier. Then my pump started alarming, and my handset.. Went to handset and it said blood test time. By time I took pump off my arm and turned it on, it was not alarming.. I think it was alarming because it was doing a lagged bolus??
But then the handset started alarming saying communication lost, wait until pump turns itself off.. Then still list communication.. Move pump closer..(they were next to each other).
My question from this.... Can the pump be unlocked and used if the meter is turned on as well?? it appears not???

Is it easy to do a battery change with the cartridge still in place with the plunger in it? Has anybody tried this yet? Just doing a battery change?

So far he's had no issues with the plastic ones, that's even while being thrown about by his friends :)
I'm sure the rep said there would't be any longer tubes than the 70 because people never asked tor them, and the steel sets would be out shortly.

I was told the Rapid D sets should be out in Feb if all goes according to plan, but I wasn't given a definite date. I don't think they have one.

My Insight is still in its box. I'm waiting to hear if I can give it back as there's no way I want it if I can continue with my current pump.

I appreciate a small pump would be good for a child, but that's not the be-all and end-all for me personally. I want a pump that doesn't need faffing about with every few days to change the battery or cartridge. My pump is a little bigger than the Insight but I'd happily put up with that for all the benefits it has - it uses normal 3ml pen cartridges for a start.

Donnellysdogs, I found the unlock for the Insight really hard to get the hang of too. It really does have to be super-quick.

At least the 100cms are available... Wearing mine back on my arm now with the 100cm tube again. They dont make the 100cm tube with a 6mm set though, although 6mm sets are available to get separately.

I loved my combo pump but this one is fantastic. I reckon I can change cartridge and flexlink sets every 4 days with a bit of luck and hopefully battery every 8 days. As the cartridge and battery are next to each other and when got used to it, it will be so much quicker than filling cartridges I'm quite happy to have 30seconds extra every 4 days.as the extras it gives just aren't available with any other pump...

Downloaded the manuals to read over the weekend. Already impressed with the options and versatility of this one, such as logging pen boluses on teh handset, multiple time settings for BG targets etc.

I think my brain's going to hurt on Monday.

We've not had to change the pump battery yet and its almost 3 week now since we started using it. The rep told us in training you can't have the pump unlocked and the handset at the same time, safety feature to stop you trying to possibly alter settings on both at he same time.

Just checked on the pump battery and we were told that it would last a month, if not more but to change it out after a month just to be safe.

Thanks for that. I always keep an emergency bag for hospitals or going away so have made sure the batterycover and batteries are also in it etc..

Will keep battery monitoring for pump, since new battery going in and registering between 80 and 90% it stabilised at 100% after about 6 hours...

@ElyDave.. When you get set up initially on a basal rate... Just a tip... If you have multiple hours set at the same rate... Still ask for every hour for 24 hours to be set up individually for each hour.... I had one block at 2-4am that was the same and it was set up as 2-4am. I needed to change it to 2-3am forone rate and 3-4am for another rate... To do this I have had to change every single hour from2am to midnight... Much easier if you get 24 hourly rates set up initially rather than long blocks of static rates...

Ie if you have the same rate from midnight to 7am. Set up the basalprofiles at the hospital for each individual hour... Not one from 00.00 to 07.00... Cos if you need to add in a separate rate for 1.00 to 2.00 its a lot of faffing around!!
