Hello.

I have a 3 year restricted driving license and the 3 years are up in September this year. Im kind of worried.

Due to me missing appointments at the main hospital even though I phoned 2/3 times they have stopped seeing me for now and im recommended to go the local doctors. I have got a new job with no contract (boss is being awkward giving me one) so I take all the hours I can get and the hospital I go to is 20 miles away.

I have had my eyes done recently which were fine, im just worried because I haven't been to the main hospital they will not re-new my driving license? Is this likely? I was told they only take it off you if you have had 2 hypos in which you need assistance, in other words called an ambulance and gone to hospital.

Thanks

Assistance includes anyone giving you Hypostop gel or glucagon, not just calling an ambulance.

The application form includes details of your diabetic Consultant. I am not sure what happens if you are unable to put one in that section of the form. Someone else may have experience there.

They may/may not write to your HCP's requesting further information on renewal, but you do need to get a diabetes check done asap so that you have up to date records on the system in case they do.

With reference to hypo's, they do take away your licence if you've had two or more hypo's whereby you needed assistance from a third party or you loose your hypo awareness symptoms , but if this isn't the case then you should be fine.

I think when you get the medical questionnaire you only have to provide your GP's details.............any actual clinic results will be sent over from the clinic to the GP's I think......

My experience is all they need to know is are you capable of noticing low blood sugar and is your vision up to scratch..........I don't think they look into how good a patient you are if you know what I mean......

get some tests done and make your application............taking note of the definition of 'severe hypo'.......;)

I am sure you will be fine......

People that can't listen to other people's opinions.
People that can't say sorry.
They do ask for consultants name and hospital but if you're not with one, it is not imperative. I was under gp care only for years and I still got mine. They don't always write to gp's or consultants. My licence when it was almost taken away was then renewed 10 months later without any letters written. Mind you, this may have been because they had letters on file from 10 months previous.
My licence is also up for renewal in Sept this year and I'm hoping by then it may be renewed under their new guidelines ( for 5 or 10 years??).

As many people with type 1 diabetes have care in the community (GP practice) then just put GP's name on the form if that's the person you see. If you want to go back to the clinic ask your GP to refer you back there.
I have no consultant so just put GP down as person I see.

5 or 10 years...? I just informed the DVLA of my insulin use (I've only been on insulin 6 months and took me about three months to tell them... Then they took a while to respond... And they still have my license which I then had to send back to them) - anyway - my license has been restricted to a two year license - despite no hypo episodes where I've needed assistance. Should I have fallen under new guidelines...?

A couple of years ago I had this problem. I had missed my consultant appointment and inbetween that and my new appointment I had to renew my licence. Basically I got a letter telling me I had to go and see the consultant before they would make a decision. Got an earlier appointment, funny how they can get you an appointment quickly when it suits, and the consultant filled the for for the DVLA out there and then answering all the usual questions like how may hypos requiring assistance etc. I only get my care from the hospital, prefer to deal with people who sspecialist in my condition, so I would presume If your get it from your GP it will work the same way

I have never had the DVLA write to my GP and I passed my test back in the 70's.

I'm sure I read that the new guidelines wouldn't come into effect until April this year if they are passed, so unfortunately you've missed out Artemis, although I am surprised that you didn't get a 3 year licence.

I'm not sure whether,if it happens, it will be as soon as that.
The minutes of the latest medical panel meeting in October last year say
Licence period for Group 1 drivers on insulin
7.1 The Panel considered information provided by DVLA on the licensing
history of Group 1 drivers on insulin including refusals/revocations and the
number and duration of licences issued. Currently, the maximum licence
duration is 3 years and DVLA wishes to explore issuing longer period
licences of up to 5 years duration. The data provided by DVLA did not
provide any indication of which drivers may be suitable for extended period
licences.
.
The Panel therefore requested further information including a larger data set
so that the issue could be considered at the next Panel meeting. In particular,
the Panel wished to see data on the proportion of drivers whose licences were
revoked in the middle of a licence period compared to those being refused on
renewal of a licence. The Panel considered that it would be helpful to have
this data statistically analysed
.

The next meeting isn't until March

I'm only managed by my local surgery so I would make an appointment to get the usual HBa1C etc done there. You don't have to be under a consultant.
