Joined this forum tonight. Was diagnosed August 2014 a day before my daughters 21st. Was told I'm type 1 and was on insulin but since September 2014 not injected at all been managing diet control. Still very new to all of this and still sometimes ask "why me" always been slim and active, noticed I started drinking so much fizzy and was losing way to much weight to the point I looked ill. I hope by being on here I can make friends as I don't know anyone personally with diabetes. And I'm the first in the family to get it

I'm Type 2 and know very little re type 1 but there are many on here and I'm sure a type 1 will be along soon to answer your questions.

Whatever we are it is daunting at first, but things do fall into place eventually. You can get very confused with the overwhelming information, but don't panic it will be ok.

Hi there. Thank you for the nice welcome :). I'm afraid I don't have a clue how to put any details on my profile at the moment. I have been told I am type 1, but recently been told at my local diabetes centre they are not sure as to what type as I could still be going through the "honeymoon" stage. I feel like I'm constantly explaining myself and what is wrong and what I can / can't eat etc etc. and what I find frustrating and scary is when I tell people a diabetic they are like " oh no I'm so sorry, that's life threatening isn't it" which absolutely petrified me hearing that said to me.

HI @Emie , Have you got any figures from your tests that may help us to give you a guide as to where you are.

Diabetes is serious if you do not take control of it. That task at first diagnosis seems impossible but it all eventually starts to make sense.

You need to have a look around the forum and ask as many questions as you want, they are a great bunch of very friendly people on here with an immense amount of knowledge.

I said I have tagged Daisy1 she will come along but it maybe in the morning now, but the information that she will give you will be invaluable to start.

You will hear a lot of conflicting information NHS v this forum, all I can say is if I had followed the NHS information I would not have got my number's down out of the diabetic range.

So hang in there and follow this forum and you will get the help you need.

To put your details in scroll up the page top right corner click on your name and go to signature you can put all your details in there they will appear at the bottom like mine.

Hi Neil. That blood test starting with H don't know it as yet but had that done last week came back at 7.2. My cholesterol is 4.7 my BMI is 22.3. I weigh 69.9 kilo and my thyroid has stabilised itself. All what the nurse told me last week. Basically said what ever I am doing is working :)

Hi Emie,

The blood test starting H is the HbA1c. This test give you your average Blood sugar levels for the last 2 to 3 months.

The figure they have given you is the DCCT they have tried to stop using this measure and you will see on here a different HbA1c

If you use this link there is a converter http://www.diabetes.co.uk/hba1c-units-converter.html

Your number of 7.2% equates to 55.2. That's not high compared to many that are diagnosed, but you need to get it lower because at that level you would over a period of time start to have complications. There are many on here with double that number when they started and they are virtually non diabetic within months once they have got it under control through the diet and some medication & exercise.

You will see on here nearly all people test on a regular basis their blood sugar levels when waking up 'Fasting' and pre meal sometimes 1hr after eating but definitely 2hr so they know what food raises their sugars too high and can avoid them in the future.

Those measurements are in mmol/L When these figures are normal they should be between 4 & 7mmol/L Fastings in the 5s first thing on a morning.

Your number of HbA1c 55.2 equals a mmol/l of 8.6 average, that means that you have been above 8.6 and below 8.6 for the previous 2 to 3 months to get this average, where for normal people their average would be in the 5s

I hope I have not confused you as it is a lot to get your head round, but it will make sense as you move forward.

You BMI looks good, your cholesterol looks good but you need to find out what the breakdown is LDL & HDL it's important, you are allowed to get a print out of your results for you HbA1c blood test + cholesterol + Liver Function & Kidney Function they takes all these tests as they are very important when diabetic you can get print out of all.

Hi @Emie

To look at the link contained in my signature just click on the red writing below, above the flower.

You don't have to answer any questions if you don't want to or can't think what to put. Just do what you feel like doing. Write something about yourself if you feel like it. If you don't want to answer any questions then don't. It's just nice for us to get to know you :)

Hi everyone.

My name is Marc. I'm a type 1 diabetic and was diagnosed in 1995, so this year is my 20 anniversary. I'm also 40 this year!

I'm a keen cyclist and I ride between 500-600 miles month. I no longer compete at any level but enjoy challenging myself and getting out there still. This obviously provides extra challenges with my diabetes but it's laegly under control. Now.

I started on a ketogenic diet 8 weeks ago and although I have a few minor things to iron out, I'm doing really well and I'm very happy with my new BG readings and general control. Due to my athletic lifestyle I'd been a 'carb loader' and stumbled across the LCHF lifestyle initially as I was looking to improve my endurance on the bike. It slowly dawned on me that it would also greatly benefit my diabetes control too.

For most of my time as a diabetic life I've been in a sort of denial about my condition. I refused to let it stop me from
doing anything. I spent 10 years travelling to remote areas of the world in places like Indonesia, Africa, Sri Lanka etc. in hindsight I was a bad diabetic and my BG were often wildly out of control.

Now, mainly thanks to beginning LCHF, I have read widely on the subject of diabetes and now have a much greater understanding.

Hopefully I can offer some help to members here and I'm sure I'll have a million and one questions too!

Hi all :)
My name is Lucy.....aka Loopy!
I'm also a Type 1. Have been diabetic for.......hang on just trying to work out the years lol.......nearly 37 years :-S
Was diagnosed in 78 so have seen many many changes over the years. Was heavily involved in the British Diabetic Association (as Diabetes UK was known back in the day) when I was in my teens but have not been involved in any group regarding Diabetes for many years. So thought I'd bite the bullet and try coming on here for the first time.
I'm not sure how much I really know about Diabetes, its so variable depending on the person. And I am still learning about my own condition as it changes with my age I'm finding. I've recently had a few changes after a prolonged stay in hospital (not connected with my diabetes). This has changed/diminished my awareness of hypoglaecaemia (excuse the spelling lol) which is quite scary. #I suppose it is this that has prompted me to come on here and hopefully chat with a few new people :) Feel free to come n chat or quiz me on my past experiences if it will help you.
I hope to chat with some of you soon :)
