Reactive Hypoglycaemia

Yes Brun probably i had grabbed a small piece of cheese and went off thinking that would keep me going. I've been ok since. My doc didn't seem worried when I saw her earlier. And she is happy to consider RH as a diagnosis which is great and to refer me to my preferred specialist xx

Hope the consultant you see recognises the symptoms?

My GP was happy to consider it and they already have a patient with RH which is good.

Hi kaz,
I have being cutting down gradually for some time because I have being having hypos when we shop in the am and if I garden in pm.
Had a lot of encouragement from the guys here so I decided to drastically cut carbs c.4 weeks or so ago. Before in September I was unwell due to drug called apixaban which I stopped taking and started on another anticoagulant. So after feeling better I started on carb reduction.
Today for example had:
breakfast.. a little soy and water porridge just 3 desserts spoons+desert wheat germ (protein)+ few sultanas. half apple+ some lidle walnuts. two teas later a coffee.
lunch: 1lidl high protein roll (10 gram carb) with butter+ hard boiled egg.+ few rasps and blueberries with soya milk.
no drink pm had 2 teas and water lunch.
dinner
brocoli, tomato, cauli, carrots, homemade beefburger (made from quality mince) with onion, egg and just a little plain flour.+ oil.
More rasps and blueberries and three spoons of Turkish yoghurt. Thought maybe too much fruit and had half later this evening.
regards
Derek

That's brilliant! How long have you been low carb for? I dream of the day I can do that again. Do you mind me asking what a typical days food is like for you?

Well, I've just got home from seeing the Consultant and I have a RH diagnosis. My level dropped to 2.7 at its lowest but my liver released some glucose and sorted me out. The good news is that my 1 and 2 hour readings were lower than previous at 12.2 and 9.0 which no longer puts me in the diabetic range, only pre-diabetic.

He doesn't however believe that RH is causing my symptoms on a daily basis, which is slightly confusing. I start to shake and feel anxious anything from 5.7 or lower, which in his opinion wouldn't cause those symptoms and I have never had a reading at a true hypo level at home. He is still waiting for the results from a 24 hour urine collection I did, which will show if I'm producing too much adrenaline. If this is normal, he's suggesting a 24 hour heart monitor to check all is ok there. If both of those are normal, then I've got him stumped!

Has anyone got any thoughts on this? Do you find you have symptoms at these levels? I suggested that it may be as a result of the extent of the drop as opposed to the actual bg at the time, but he thought this unlikely too.

Hi Kaz,
Meters can be 20% out of tolerance up or down. The 24 hour monitoring will show any heart anomalies. It showed I needed a pacemaker when I had a monitor on.

Hi Derek,
Sounds like you're doing great! It's very encouraging that in as little as 4 weeks you're starting to feel the benefits. Thanks for listing what you've eaten too. It just gives me a few pointers as I'm new to this.
Take care
Kaz

What a result. :D Delighted for you.

I would say to enter into all his tests with enthusiasm.
You've already had the urine collection (to investigate cushings, i assume), and your low carbing won't affect your heart.

So if your switch to low carbing eliminates the highs and lows - and your other symptoms recede - then you can probably assume they are connected. I think that is a definite possibility.

If the heartrate monitoring shows anything up, then that would place you squarely in the right place for treatment.

So it is ALL good. :D:D:D

I'm happy for you because of the diagnosis and that's great!
The doctor will probably be confused as to what symptoms you have described, he isn't aware of the different symptoms that I have and what Brun or you has! We all get different symptoms.
I agree with you it is probably the extent of the drop in blood glucose and what fluctuating blood glucose levels do to you.
Did he give you any dietary advise or have you told him that you are starting to follow a low carb approach to the diagnosis?
Do you feel better already?

Thank you. He didn't give dietary advice, but I told him I was experimenting with low carb and he said he didn't blame me!

I can't say that I feel much different at the minute to be honest. I had nuts and Bruns low carb hot choc before bed instead of my usual crackers and cheese. I didn't wake til 6 but I was hungry and had more nuts. On getting up at 7 and after having my shower I've been very shaky again. My bg was 5.8. I must say I don't understand the shakes myself, as my levels aren't low.

I've had 2 little omelette muffins and a coffee but still hungry. Not sure what to do now! Teaspoon of peanut butter or plain biscuit?

Thanks Brun. I'm pleased he's investigating other possibilities too.

I'm feeling s little tough this morning again. Woke quite shaky and now I feel a little light headed and like I'm running on empty so to speak. I guess this could be "carb flu"? I've had a few almonds, 2 small omelette muffins and coffee for breakfast. Still felt shaky so had a teaspoon of peanut butter as well. I'm now back from the school run and feel light headed and hungry again. I'm having a coffee with double cream (actually quite nice), but I'm not sure I'm getting it quite right? My bg was 6.4 before the school run, so pretty good.

This is the time for 'toughing it out', it could be carb flu, but it could adjusting to not many carbs.
Hopefully, in couple of days you will feel better and be yourself again.

Eat low carb little and often.

Yeah, wot noshy said.

But you can ease the transition by
- drinking lots
- making sure you get enough salt (can you drink Bovril, or half a stock cube in hot water, as a broth/soup?
- not doing too much strenuous stuff
- eating FAT

Can you add butter or olive oil to your veg? A dab of butter on your omelette? Cook with coconut oil? It is hard to overestimate how much of a difference this makes, to get you through the first week or two.

After the transition, you can cut back down again - if you want. :)

Your body is overloaded with glucose and insulin that you can't get rid of. During the days ahead you need to use up that excess glucose and insulin. The more you have the more you want, hence the hunger pangs. The need for more carbs. Just a gentle walk, a couple of times a day will help, not anything too energetic.
You need to stop giving your body the excuse to produce more. So it's either reducing your carbs or fasting. Fasting I don't believe is an option you would like to try yet, so the low carb, little and often would be the best option.

Thanks both. I'm sticking with it! I just feel like all I'm eating is nuts! Apart from breakfast I've had a nut protein bar and some almonds. Just doesn't feel very healthy. I've got myself a high protein roll for lunch, so I'll give that a try.

Can you recommend any other snacks for in between meals? Particularly while out and about?

Your help and support in getting me through this is so appreciated x

Noshy is your Snack Hound, so i will let him answer that.

I rarely snack any more, just eating big meals that last for ages.

For snacks, nuts, pieces of fresh fruit, meat slices, yoghurt, berries, bowl of soup etc.
I'm stuck now but there are loads of other ideas around. If I think of something I will add it.
Anything with no carbs, really, bite size!

Thanks. I'd love to get back to eating a big meal that lasts me a few hours. That's how I've always ate. Do you think that the more you snack, the more your body gets used to it and need to continue? I definitely need to get my head around having more fat!

I'm making a homemade fish curry for dinner later. Not sure what to have with it to replace the rice and it is a very low fat recipe. I guess a bit more oil would help?

Sorry if I'm asking some silly questions! It's a completely new way of thinking, cooking and shopping! There's some ingredients mentioned in this thread that ive never heard of and wouldn't know where to get! Doesn't help that I've got my husband and two young children to cook for as well. Be nice to just cook one dish and adapt for me. I'll get there with time I'm sure and my health and wellbeing is worth the effort. It may make the rest of the family healthier as well, not that we eat unhealthy processed food or takeaways.
