Reactive Hypoglycaemia

A fish curry on its own is enough, why do you need to bulk up the meal?
Let your family eat the rice or whatever your having. Just have more fish or curry. I suspect you want to eat more than you actually need, have a small plate full, then have more later! There is alternatives to rice, the low carb forum is full of them. Your family might not notice!
I know it's really hard, but if you keep at it, at times I hardly eat anything all day, just enough to keep me going!
For example, I have in the past cooked low carb sausage, and ate one every couple of hours, or just a low carb burger, you can make these yourself. From good fatty mince. Rissoles with herbs, meatballs, I even have black pudding with my gammon and eggs, small omelettes with any meat or mushrooms, or good veg.
Have a salad, I have salad every day, no cooking! Just change the meat, you can make one up yourself, or buy one from the supermarket for around £1.
Have a slice of Bergen bread with butter and meat and salad, tomatoes, I have had a tomato, just to keep me going as a wee snack between snacks.
It sounds like I'm obsessed with snacking, I'm not. I just use the options and because it's little and often, I don't count it as snacking!

@Kaz261 Just been thinking about what we have/have had in our cupboards that could count as snacky stuff

The low carb hot choc materials
Bovril (if you put some cream in)
Miso soup (if you add some chopped sausage or meat)
Cheese in all its various glory
Pre cooked bacon frazzle things (only ever seen them in M&S, so they are an occasional treat)
Egg mayo sandwich filling (by the spoon)
9 bars
Coffeencream
Low carb pumpkin latte (google it)
Leftovers
Mini baked stuffed peppers using goats cheese or pate
Lidl rolls with cheese, pate, marmite or whatever (they freeze sliced so you only need a small slice)
Fat bombs
Berries n cream
Any one of the amazing lc cakes in the lc recipe threads
Low carb mug cakes (just google them)
70% cocoa choc (can be combined with nuts, fruit and or cream, and can be eaten warm from microwave)
Cashew and carrot coleslaw
Hummus
Taramasalata
Almond bread slices
Ugg cake mix muffins (v expensive though)
Sukrin cake mix sponge (ditto)
Celery and cream cheese
Ham and cheese rollups
Rolmops (yum)
Coronation chicken (cubed chicken breast with mayo and a smidge of Pataks curry paste)

Oh! Okay! It's snacking! I'm obsessed!

I'm weird!

Hey ho!
Lol! Admit it...you're a snackaholic! As am I!

Ooh fish curry for tea and supper...mmmm there's a good thought! I won't need a snack this afternoon, I'll still be munching my way through this protein roll lol! It's nice but heavy going!

If I don't eat enough, I just get hungry an hour later. I therefore tend to eat 3 proper meals with snacks in between. I feel like im constantly cooking, shopping for "weird" ingredients or eating at the minute! Doesn't seem to leave much time for anything else. I need to get my confidence back so I can start taking the girls out again knowing that I have the right snacks if I need them. I haven't been driving either as I don't feel safe especially having the girls in the car.

Hey ho.... One step at a time! I WILL get my life back!

Wow, so many ideas! Thank you so much! Sorry if I appear a bit think! I think I've just been getting a bit bogged down with it all. First the diabetes diagnosis and changing my diet to suit. I was controlling the spikes and getting good 2 hour post meal readings but started getting RH symptoms. The consultant was confused so you can imagine how I felt! I was also losing weight no matter how much I ate. Lost just over a stone and was close to being under weight. It does seem to be going back on now though. With all this fat I'll be piling it on lol!

Thanks again x

Hi Kaz,
I tried some red lentils to replace high GI carbs, you won't need many they are very filling and are low g.i.
Derek
Thanks Derek,
I tried the Lidl protein roll at lunch. Was very nice, although it took me about half an hour to eat! Was very filling and I didn't need a snack for 3 hours! I wasn't particularly hungry even then but thought I should eat in case my bg dropped.
I'm willing to try any suggestions.
Regards
Kaz

Meant to say my doc recommended a book escape the diet trap so have ordered it will let you know what it is like.

Have just been out for tea has monkfish tails in garlic butter and a salad. Blood sugar 6.3 after two hours and I am full and happy :))))) xx

I'm the same Kaz I get nervous looking after my three year old boy on my own at the moment just in case. He's too little to get help if we needed it.

We will get there though I am sure of it and I can't wait to feel like I have this thing controlled. I spoke to my GP about the long GGT test and she said well what is the point. We can see what's wrong and we know what to do with you so why go through an unpleasant experience? I kind of get where she is coming from so will see what consultant says xx

The real point of a glucose test is at what point do you hyper and then hypo?
How much does your body tolerate glucose?
How quickly do you spike, how high, how long after the glucose, you hypo, how much glucose, insulin, glucagon, glycogen, hormones in your blood!
There is a lot of blood tests they can do at the same time.
There is a lot they can learn from the test and it is worth doing.

I have had a few and my consultant has learned a lot from them.

Thanks Nosher I will mention this to her. Hopefully the consultant I see first off will be willing to listen

I will try the lidl roll Kaz and Derek xx
I sliced one in half yesterday and made it into a pizza as that's what the rest of the family were having. Spread a little tomato purée on, added oregano, cheese, ham etc and baked it in the oven for 10 mins or so. Not as good as the real thing but still enjoyed it with some salad. Didn't need to eat for a whole 3 hours which is rare for me!

My consultant didn't check any of those other things during my prolonged GTT which annoyed me slightly as we could have learned so much more. I have a feeling it's because I went private and Bupa only pay for the bare minimum! My NHS appointment took 4 months from the original referral, no way I could wait that long! When I did go all they did was a thyroid test, which was normal. Totally dismissed diabetes due to my normal hba1c.

What the prolonged GTT did tell me was that although I hypo'd after 3 hours, my liver released some glucose (?) and sorted me out. Gives me a little more confidence that in daily life where the spike is far less, I shouldn't drop quite as low or fast and my body hopefully will continue to deal with it eventually.

The test wasn't pleasant but definitely worthwhile.

I just need to work out why I often wake up feeling shaky and irritable?! Happened again this morning. Level was 5.1 so doesn't make any sense!

I have a 6 year old and a 2 year old and just feel nervous and guilty much of the time at the minute. Trips out are a nightmare at the minute as I'm still not confident in what I can eat. I find eating out very scary as I don't yet know what to eat. The confusing bit for me is that I can eat a certain amount of starchy carbs with a meal without causing my bg to spike significantly (an increase of 2mmols max and back down to 5's or 6's within two hours). I just get hungry and shaky two hours after eating even though my levels aren't low? This is what makes no sense to my consultant. Do you find this at all?

How long have you been having symptoms?
I only ask as I've been like this 25 years on and off having various tests etc. In the summer my blood sugar was up and down like a yoyo, really high and really low. Past few weeks im eating less carbs and healthier eating. I still have a cheeky pizza and blood sugar within range. Im still getting symptoms and head spins just not the hypo levels or terrible symptoms associated with that. Last week I was fine all week and this week initial symptoms more and I'm around menstruation time.

I have only noticed the symptoms since mid Aug. I was diagnosed with diabetes at the end of July although was having symptoms related to that since Mar. Since the diagnosis things have changed and I now get RH symptoms. I first thought it was anxiety as I didn't take my diabetes diagnoses well as it was completely out of the blue.

For many years I have suffered with fatigue and very ocassional bouts of dizziness and feeling suddenly light headed.

I too find that my symptoms are worse at certain times during my cycle, so I have no doubt that hormones play a big part.

Have you just reduced your carb intake then rather than the really low carb diet others follow? I've reduce my daily carb intake by half in the last few days. I cant say that I feel a lot better. I can't decide whether to really go for the low carb diet which means cutting out many foods that I enjoy and can eat without the huge soikes or whether to include these in moderation. I guess time and experimentation will tell.

The advice and support I've found from this forum is invaluable though

I only got diagnosed recently from my home testing and still need the hospital tests. I'm positive its rh. I self diagnosed and googled for a couple of years trying to find matches for my symptoms. I took the diabetes hypoglycaemia awareness test and noticed that waz exactly me, my dad being t1 seeing his hypos I knew thats what was happening to me.
I have 3 kids and work so following a strict diet is hard. I eat more fruit. I now live on nuts, cheese, coffee with cream. I've stopped eating sandwiches and chocolate bars. I now have a small scoop of potato or pasta rather than a huge plate. Just pile up the meat and veg rather than make the carb the main portion of the meal. I've stopped sugary foods completely. I've noticed its the actual sugar that has an affect on me. If i have a carb meal i notice i feel slightly more ill after. So i know next time eat less of that. Its a healthier way of eating. Im sensitive to feeling the spins as for years drs have said when does it happen. Last year I thought it was walking and excersize triggering it. But it's breakfast and also exercise that adjust the blood sugar the most.

I heard once that by the time our bodies are shaking the insulin has kicked in so by the time you test its already fixing itself. So possibly when you wake up your rising from a low? Not sure how it works. @nosher and @brunn really are the experts.
