Does high red blood count affect hbA1C

Hi All,

Just got a1c results and they were higher than expected. I use a CPAP machine and have an abnormally high haemoglobin count due this. As its the glycated haemoglobin that is measured to get the hbA1C, I wonder if anyone knows how a high haemoglobin count might affect the hba1c result.

Probably since the inverse is true.

An elevated HbA1c can be caused by an abnormally slow turnover of haemoglobin - when our red blood cells live longer than the average life expectancy of them. Similarly, those who have a faster turn over of red blood cells are likely to have lower than expected HbA1c levels. The usual life of red blood cells is around 120 days, which is what the HbA1c is based on. Personally, I have never heard of a high haemoglobin count as being a factor.
