Hello,

Ok, have been type one for 25 years too long, currently on 2 a day on those old skool things, called needles!!

Nurse is desperately trying to get me on pens, have yet another one to try now.

In a really ****** off and resentful mood, can someone tell me I am not alone, they have days where they cry and want to eat as much **** as poss!!!

Have no idea what I am doing and feel rather ****.

Sorry, I am normally really positive but am fed up of being told about 'normal' things and people!!

Can anyone suggest a small pen for people with small hands??!!

Hi members of the forum! My name is Doug Takeuti. I’m the father of Julia, 7 years old, T1 since October 2012. I am married to Cida, and we live in Campinas, Brazil, 100 km from Sao Paulo city, where we live a frugal, yet very good life. This forum has been a great source of information for us. It is reassuring to have such a huge community to refer to in case of the many doubts we have when we are newly diagnosed.
I am a physics teacher at an international school here in Campinas, where Julia is a 1st grader. She is a lovely girl who loves animals and has adapted very well to her new condition. We have the full support of the school, so it has been a smooth transition (as much as it could be, I think). She has no problems measuring her glucose level or injecting insulin and has become very good at reading food labels for carbs.
We are considering getting her a pump, but it is expensive for us. The health system provides the insulin (it took them 6 months to approve it) and test strips, but insulin pumps is just for people at high risk. I could possibly pay for the pump, but I don’t think I could pay for the monthly maintenance costs out of my teacher salary. Let us just hope that, as insulin pumps become more widely used, our government would change its policy.
We love to travel as a family and have good friends in the UK, where I took my PhD. That is probably why I like this forum so much – it reminds me of all the lovely people I met when I lived there!

Hi everyone.
My name is Lee and I am a 60 year old (or young? no, definitely OLD!) male. Not too sure what to put as I just want to share something with you. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes several years ago. In 2011 a friend asked me to accompany her to a slimming class as she felt awkward going by herself (aged 80) I joined with her and I have now lost 5 stones in weight, and my diabetes. It started to recede (is that the right term?) with the more weight I lost. My great nurse didn't want to say it would go completely, but I think she had her fingers crossed! In July of 2012, a week or so after my 59th birthday, she gave me the news that I could discontinue ALL my diabetes meds, most of my blood pressure meds and I could stop taking my statin too. My cholesterol could still do with coming down, but at least I am off that drug for the time being. It is up to me now to keep all those problems away otherwise they could come back. I am not 'cured' of diabetes, my body can now produce what it needs for someone of my size. My friend and I (she has lost nearly 3 stone by the way!) go for lots of walks down here in Cornwall. I think the exercise and walking plus being nearly a vegan has played a part in my new found health. Also, I can now buy trousers that fit my waist without needing several inches of the bottom of the leg!
Best wishes, Lee

Hello Forum

I have been lurking for a few months now & its time I posted.
I have never joined a forum or done the social network stuff so please go easy on me.

Right here goes, my story/rant
My name is Lee, just turned 30, I live in Surrey UK, diagnosed with type 1 in Sep 2012.

Last summer I tore the Sciatic nerve while helping a friend move home. Shortly after I had a large cyst on my back. When this burst I went to the doctors to get it dressed & also got given some strong painkillers.

A month later I was feeling really weak(I have been Anorexic since my teenage years so I am use to this). Also I was very thirsty & could not walk properly. I foolishly put this down to the nerve problem, cyst, medication & Anorexia.

I took a month off work & just stayed in bed drinking water/fruit juice.
When I started drinking 6-8 litres a day & could not get up for a cigarette I knew something was wrong. I called my brother, he came & called the ambulance.

I don't remember a lot about the hospital apart from the fantastic care, advice & small talk with the nurses & doctors. I also remember as soon as all the drips & tubes were removed from me I escaped(well staggered) for a packet of smokes(what an idiot I was).

I quickly came to terms with my diagnosis & all I wanted was as much information as I could cram into my brain(I wish I had my mac book pro in hospital). I want to be in control of diabetes not the other way round.

I was released after a month & when I got home I could not do too much really. I was so weak, hypo a lot, disorientated, coming to terms with it all & contemplating a whole life style change.

The doctors said being Anorexic probably saved my life as I was not eating & only drinking.

When the honeymoon period was over I started to get on top of it. My average readings are 6-7 mmol before meals & rarely go high unless Im ill or eat a bit of birthday cake with the kids :). I also don't hypo so severely now.

Diabetes has saved my life not made it worse. I have a healthy diet now, exercise regularly, stopping smoking, good sleep pattern, regularly see the doctors & hopefully Anorexia has gone for good(i have put on 4 stone so I am worried)

I consider myself lucky as I don't like sweet or junk foods, don't drink alcohol, don't mind the constant checking or injections & now enjoy talking to doctors.
I do have a fear of hypoglycemia though. Not a mild one where you get the shakes & sweat. A severe one where you slur your speech & don't know what's happening. People have taken the **** out of me & I can't defend myself mentally or physically when in that state.
But since the honeymoon period has ended I have not had a severe hypo.
I admit that I am scared of hypoglycemia as I am powerless while it's happening.

I am new to this & am learning to control it as best I can.

I want to thank the Admins, Mods & users for all their effort, work & views
When I got out of hospital it was so reassuring to read other diabetics views & experiences.

If this is posted in the wrong place I am sorry in advance.

Kind regards
Lee

Hi. I'm Sarah, 40 years young and recently diagnosed with Type 2!!! I have to admit to being very scared and using the gym, frequently, to work out my frustration!!! I'm hoping it will help me lose weight and control my sugar levels!!! For those of you with smart phones, I also use an app called "My Fitness Pal", which is really useful for tracking what you eat!! Just by using the app I managed to lose a whole stone in weight in the last twelve months, and that was before the diagnosis!!
