Shows the power of regular exercise. That's great to hear Wurst.

Type 1 and low carb -how low do you go?

Same as I was until recently. MDI and monitoring with Verio I'm trying to understand how you get an HbA1c under 5%. On the one hand, you do a lot of exercise which will soak up any high sugar like a helpful sponge. On the other hand, you may be consistently going hypo through the night and...

Do you use a CGM or Libre, Wurst?

Type 1 and low carb -how low do you go?

That's great Wurst. Were you diagnosed as type 1 as an adult? Was the diagnosis recent or have you had it for years and years?

Type 1 and low carb -how low do you go?

My HbA1c has been 6% for about the last 3 years. (It was actually as low as 5.3% before that but I think that was fuelled by too much time spent hypo -interestingly, that was when my cholesterol levels went very high) My low carb quantity is in the 100-150g per day bracket. It has been lower in...

Type 1 and low carb -how low do you go?

Do you find that protein and/or fat raise your sugar levels? My experience is that: Protein leads to an upwards rise between 3 and 5 hours after eating. Fat more gradually increases sugar levels over a period of up to 8 hours after eating.

Fats that Heal & Fats that Kill

Total cholesterol of 6.8 mmol/l is not necessarily too high -as long as you have healthy HDL levels. A far more reliable indicator of health is your total cholesterol to HDL ratio -which should ideally be under 3.5 As you have a total cholesterol of 6.8, this means that if that same blood test...

Type 2 On Gliclazide - Snacks? Any ideas welcome!

If gliclazide is giving you low sugar levels, the dose should probably be reduced or you should be taken off the dose if already on the lowest dose. Eating simply to raise sugar levels is going to make you put on weight. This is precisely why gliclazide is strongly linked with weight gain. My...

    Type 2 Urinary tract infection

UTIs with diabetes are usually (but not always) a result of too high sugar levels which causes sugary urine and therefore a fertile breeding ground for bacteria. Cranberry juice as ChrisSamsDad has noted is high in sugar so you're probably best to avoid this -it might actually make things...

    not coping well with diabetes

@rosieposie6661 One problem is that high sugar levels actually gives us depressive symptoms -making us more likely to feel burnout. I was in your position for a number of years. Eventually -thanks to the forum here- I tried reducing down my carbs. Taking that step, of cutting my carbs down...

    Help needed on weight gain

One problem you have is that you're taking gliclazide (a drug in a group of drugs known as sulphonylureas). This drug makes your body produce more insulin. More insulin in the body means greater insulin resistance and much greater risk of weight gain. Whilst none of us here should advise you to...

explaining what it's really like to live with Type 1

Currently, life as a type 1 for me is scanning my arm with my Libre every half hour or so and taking a series of small injections (typically around 10 a day at present) through the day. Injections and Libre scanning is the relatively easy part. Needing to sometimes wait to eat until your sugar...

    Sleep issues with Diabetes

I get hot when my sugar levels are high or low. Even slightly high or slightly low seems to trigger it. It's so reliable that my partner will feel my skin and if I feel warm, she'll tell me to test and invariably a high or low sugar level will be the result. Low sugar usually brings additional...

    Staying positive

It's difficult when this happens. Despite your best efforts, numbers in double figures keep coming. I put my faith in the fact that if I keep doing the right things, the numbers will get better and yes, that repeatedly turnjs out to be the case. The one thing that really makes a difference for...

    The Diabetic Rap thread

Diabetes is a shock Often frightening Learn to know it though It's utterly enlightening If more doctors came Took a look at the forum Seeing the drops in HbA1c Would totally floor them (It's more like verse than rap -but hey, it's a try)

Glicazide added to my repeat prescription

There's a fair amount of evidence pointing to sulphonylureas (such as gliclazide) being strongly linked with beta cell burnout. Read the text under the heading 'ANTI-DIABETIC DRUGS: BENEFICIAL OR HARMFUL?' in the following link: http://diabetes.diabetesjournals.org/content/54/suppl_2/S108

    Gliclazide

Gliclazide works by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin. It is good at lowering blood glucose levels but this comes at a price. Producing more insulin means insulin resistance gets worse, makes weight gain more likely and burns out the pancreas. Keep taking these drugs for a...

    Forgot my basal this morning

Yes, that would be useless but have you tried today? Your post quoted above doesn't make it clear if you're talking about today or the last time you tried calling them. If you haven't called them today, at least, give it a shot. Calling 111 is also a valid option.
