I had one of these:

(Google Tesco Steak and Kidney Pudding)

along with 4 x new potatoes + a few tinned peas/carrots + fresh spinach + 2 x slices of wholemeal bread + a glass of red wine, at home last night and 2+ hours later my bg reading was 12.2

My fasting test this morning was back down to 6.6

So, I'm puzzled about my occasional higher readings...Could it have been the suet? :?

People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
It's a Pudding ........33.6g carbs per Pudding. Add that to the carbs in the spuds, tinned peas and carrots, the bread you ate and that is a meal containing well over 60g of carbs..........

That's why your Bg level was high........that's almost twice what I eat in a day and a meal would have no more than 20g - 30g carbs for a 'blow out.' It was probably even higher later on !

Back to the drawing board Malc........ :(

Obviously I've still got a lot to learn about 'carbs'...

Sorry about the unintended 'advert', but I thought it would be an easy way to show what I'd had... :)

Recently diagnosed type 2 and although I've been prescribed 1 x Metformin, I'm attempting to treat my condition by ( don't laugh), 'diet' only and on Saturday afternoon I had my lowest reading so far, 5.6 so I did think that my 'system' was on track, until last night...
Thanks for your replies, as you say , 'back to the drawing board.' :D

Regards, Malc.

Hi Malc!

I too have a weakness for steak & kidney pud . . . the Fray Bentos ones particularly.

In fact I had one on Sat 12th, (not FB) with fresh veg, on my special meal out with a friend. Research, you understand! BUT - I didn't have potatoes, I didn't have bread and butter, and I had rather more than two glasses of wine

I'm sorry to have to tell you that my bg was 6.6 2 hours afterwards, which I though wasn't at all bad, considering!

There is also the possibility that mine might have had less crust than yours, being hand-made in the restaurant. Incidentally, it's not the suet that gets your bg, it's the carbohydrate in the flour. The suet just does in your cholesterol levels!

So - maybe this time next year, who knows, I might have another one? But they definitely have to be on the 'treat' list, right up there next to fish and chips, and not on my everyday menus.

Sorry - it's a hard life! But it's better than being blind, footless and on dialysis - or even dead!

Keep smiling :D . Take your diabetes by the scruff of the neck and give it a good shake!

Viv :)

mm steak and kidney, I had a s & K pie last night, delicious. mm, ewan, lovely kidneys, yum yum.
Depending on how they make it, often there's flour in the gravy/filling as well as the crust.

Partial to a steak & kidney pudding myself, I'll have to buy the ingredients and tell the wife to get her pinny on! :D

Hi malc I am the same just been diagnosed type 2 and big diet changes. But still readings all over the place but fingers crossed they are coming down. I would say it was the suet. I bought cards and cars book it is really good. Have a look. Anne

Hi Belle859 and wecome to the forums. You're replying to a post that's about 12 years old so it's unlikely you'll get a reply.

As a matter of interest, suet itself (or other fats) does not raise blood glucose. Suet pastry or puddings will, because of the flour in the mix. In the meal quoted, the potatoes and bread are high carb items and along with the pastry are probably what contributed most to the BG rise. The carrots and peas have carbs. You also don't know what thickeners or additives are in the processed pie itself.

Hi , I'm still around, despite my type 2 diagnosis just over 12 years ago.
When I eventually tried medication, about 8 years ago, I found that Gliclazide (40mg) suited me best. Just 1 tablet per day.
Then in March they told me they were removing it from my repeat prescription. I wasn't happy about that decision and I told them so!.
Needless to say my bg readings suddenly shot up into double figures.(15+) on 2 consecutive days and above average levels constantly.
I am now back on Gliclazide, after several heated discussions at the surgery...My prescription is limiting me to 14 tablets per 28 days.
I just thought that I should reply with an update to my post .

Regards, Malc.

Highly unlikely to be a fat causing elevated glucose levels - carbohydrates are broken down into simple sugars and end up in the bloodstream and in storage around the waistline of a typical type 2.
Humans do need fat, and also proteins to survive.
On low fat the repair work on our nervous system is impeded, hormones and other essentials are in short supply which can be a sad case for men in particular.

Hi,
May I just remind everyone that my original post here was OVER 12 years ago!!......I am more aware these days...Also the mention of a "typical" type 2, does NOT apply to me. my BMI is (and has been ) around 22 for many years and I DONT have a "waistline of a typical type 2".....Just felt the need to update this post.
