I eat a low carb/ketogeninc type diet, and I don't tie myself down to any specific eating regime: I'll eat if I'm hungry, but most often skip breakfast (something I've done most of my life from long before and since my T2 diagnosis). I let my body tell me what it needs and when it needs it. But I'm not on any diabetic medications , so it may be different if you are using insulin.

@MissMuffett : ADF is alternate day fasting but I can't tell you though what exactly that entails...

Thank you. ;)
It usually means fast for around 36 hours. Last meal 6pm say on a Monday and then don’t eat again until breakfast Wednesday.

I skip breakfast and and have lunch and dinner but try and be guided by my state of hunger. If I don’t feel hungry I skip lunch too! I try not to be tied to eating a meal because the clock says so.

I don’t fast, I had serious issues around food when I was younger and still do to a certain extent so I avoid fasting for fear of triggering something. I eat usually 3 times a day with 5 hr gaps, I do sometimes miss lunch if I’m not hungry, but then I tend just to think about food all the time and then snack

I go by hunger, so sometimes brunch and dinner each at whatever time, sometimes dinner only. I would be quite happy to fast for longer, but the hunger cuts in and doesn't go away until I feed it. I have known people say that they "get past" hunger pangs or even don't get them at all, but I am not one of those people. Still, what I do seems to work for me.

Personally I do Time Restricted Eating during the week and OMAD on weekends, but that's just because it is more convenient for me that way.
I have a friend who does a modified form of ADF - not exactly fasting but l eating only 1 breakfast sized meal on alternate days. And normal 3 meal on the other days.
He isn't diabetic, but obese and has lost some weight on that, but recently weight seems to have stabilised at less than before, but still obese.
Note he doesn't Low carb - says not eating bread would kill him. [ I take the exact opposite view, but keep quiet to avoid arguments.]

Before I did my three and a half day fast recently I was doing 18.6 fasting which really suited me and I lost several pounds on that. I will go back to that as it suits me very well. I've never done one day eating one day fasting though.

I have been told that (if already fat adapted) that after 36hrs of fasting it gets easier.
Don't know if that's true for me since I only do such a fast for 3 days (and only 3 days) for medical procedure which I need every 2 yrs.

@ianf0ster YES! it IS true n much to my surprise! I've only done this one fast and expected to be hungry by day 2 but I've not had a single hunger pain throughout the whole 86 hours of fasting and could easily have carried on! But I thought I'd done enough for first my fast x

Going to adf. There's no help for my tummy and digestive issues. And gums and mouth pain. It's all I can think of doing.

If I'm allowed to I'd like to post how I'm doing. I'm a bit confused on what can be posted on the group.

Wish me luck.
Thanks

I totally agree with not eating just because a clock says so.

Hi @cdpm

As this your own thread that you started back in 2023 of course you are more than welcome to record here how you are doing and keeping a record, in fact this is the perfect place to do it :)

The best of luck on trying this, I hope it works for you and certainly keep us up to date on how it’s going

The term "big boned" lol repeatedly told this growing up!
The only time I can do intermittent fasting is when I am going through some kind of emotional trauma. My appetite goes completely and my weight drops drastically and I crash mentally. Always causes me so many problems with my digestion/mental health I automatically go into starvation mode. I think its a survival thing fight or flight. Divorce, death, a house move, family problems all trigger it. On a normal day etc, I cannot fast.

I was doing some reading on adf and it appears that's its supposed to be not eating every other day right? So nothing for 24 hours but water mainly .
So how is from say 7 one night (allowing myself time to eat with 0 teeth slower than other people) until 5 on the day after the next day 24 hours?
Like today at 7 until 5 on tues? Isn't that more than 24 hours?
Adf must be more than 24 hours then.
How long is it then?

24 hr fasting would be eating once a day at the same time - so for example 7pm every day. This is also known as OMAD or one meal a day.

Alternate day fasting would be eat nothing Monday - eat anything you want on Tuesday, eat nothing Wednesday, eat anything you want Thursday and so on

48 hr fasting would be for example eat at 7pm Monday, nothing Tuesday, 7pm Wednesday, nothing Thursday 7pm

I’m not recommending to you or anyone else these ways of fasting just explaining time frames etc.

also the times you do eat on any type of intermittent fasting should be dense in calories & nutrients to sustain your health, it’s important that the food you do eat is nutritious

Is it safe for you to eat like this @cdpm considering you are on insulin?

I had to discontinue the 2 insulins and Ozempic. There were too many side effects for me and it only gave me more issues to cope with on top of the original issues. My health care people said insulin was the only thing we could do. And didn't offer suggestions to help with the side effects. So I'm completely unmedicated. Numbers above 9 most of the time so even the High insulin doses didn't work. In fact since stopping those 3 meds 9 is an improvement believe it or not. (Actually I don't think I explained that right but it's hard to explain properly). I was in the 12s and above on the meds.

So today's day 1. Totally looking forward to less to 0 mouth/gum pain. Happy I'm not going to be having to eat worthless non nutrient sugar carbs to avoid the pain. We will see how it goes and eat tomorrow.

Not too hungry yet.
Alot of it was from side effects.
But it is still early in the day. About 4 hours from my normal meal time.
