ally1,s BS levels

to be honest, i,ve no idea how to cook fish

before tea 7.2
after 8.9

Hi @ally1. I'm sure you will have lots of suggestions heading your way, but if I'm in a hurry, I find the quickest way to cook fresh fish is to poach it in a mixture of milk and water with a knob of butter in a shallow pan on the hob. Depending on the size of the fish and whether you use gas or electric it need only take about 15 mins

If you have more time, you can wrap a piece in foil with a knob of butter and a squeeze of lemon juice and some seasoning and bake it in the oven.

There's many more adventurous ways to cook fish, but these might be a good place to start and would make a change from salads now that the weather is getting cold.

Give it a go, and let us know how it turns out.

EDIT. The poaching won't work if its battered fish though!

It's amazing done like Diana says, wrapped in foil with butter and black pepper and baked in the oven! Smoked haddock is lovely poached in water then lots of vinegar on!!

I'm not sure poaching in milk is a good idea. Milk spikes me.

I fry fresh fish (cod or haddock) gently in butter. Dead simple and quick, with a crispy outer layer if it's done right. Supermarkets sell it in sealed packets.

Hi Ally great results today.
I'm not much of a cook - but salmon Is great done in the oven with Philadelphia cheese on top. Or done in a steamer. That's what I do on a Saturday I put my veg in to steam, go for a 20 min walk when I get back I add the fish to the top their of the steamer and in 10/15 mins it's all done. Add a little butter to your veg and a little salt & pepper to the fish and you have a yummy meal:)

Plain salmon (from lidls about £2.79 for two). Put both on an oven tray with a few cut fresh chives. (I grow chives in the garden and just go out and cut a few off n snip them up into tiny pieces). Cover with foil and shuff in oven at 160 degrees (fan assisted) for 16-18 mins...Eat hot or cold.

@Bluetit1802 The amount of milk used is negligible - probably the same amount used in a milky cup of tea. The poaching liquid is a mix of milk and water. But I take your point. A negligible amount of milk doesn't spike me, but it may others.

OK probably fine if only a dash. I hate fish poached anyway. Mum used to poach fish in milk for my dad when I was a child. I could never eat it as the smell made me sick and I can still smell it now as I think about it, so I guess I'm anti-poaching anyway! That was in the days of old fashioned cookers and no extractor fans!

Oh dear. Not quite what we want to hear when we are trying to encourage @ally1 to give cooking fish a go!

Oh dear, sorry about that Ally. Please don't let my little foibles put you off. Fish is dead easy to cook, even I can do it and that is really saying something. Please do give it a try and let us know how you get on.

I was a person that could never eat fish unless it was battered.

Took me 50 years to realise I was wrong. Salmon and cod is pretty easy to cook in a basic way.

I do bery little cooking really compared to hubby but it is minimal effort and does taste good.

Even my fishcakes with cod are superb and very simple.

Wish I learned to cook and eat it years ago...

i like the sound of creamy cheesy cabbage
i,m going to have fish and veg
Ok here it is. Steam or boil your cabbage but leave a little bite to it..I slice it up into ribbons. Then strain and add a knob of butter some double cream and a handfulof grated cheese. Toss it all together. Filling. Next to no carbs almost a meal in itself. Add black pepper

I know you don't cook but if you could get trying some easy dishes we post you will save money instead of buying prepared meals like frozen battered fish which is high in carbs and have a go. Its fun and low carb recipes will be so much better for your blood levels

Mmmmm this sounds lovely and simple too... I might try this over the weekend

Vegetable bake is nice too. Lots of veg par boiled. Any you fancy. Leave a good bite. Make a low carb cheese sauce..philly butter cream and grated cheese. Pour over and bubble in the oven till golden...this was one of my favourite meals and I lost 2 stone so quickly. More fats faster weight loss. I was having 35g of carb a day
