My DH had his cholesterol results this morning. He is not a Diabetic though. His cholesterol total was apparently too high. So we asked for the figures and it turns out the high bit is the HDL good cholesterol. He has lots of that!!! and very litlle of the bad cholesterol.

The doctor tutted a bit and told DH to have a low-fat diet as it is good for him. DH pointed out that he eats lard, butter, full fat milk and cream and his cholesterol is good and his HDL levels are very good so why should he change.

She changed the subject!!! So I think you are right that they have a set script they stick to regardless of the results.

I tried eating carbs and doing the diet the NHS recommend last week on my holidays. My blood sugar levels went over 8  so I am back on the low-carbing again now. It really works.

No, not at all! I was angry at your DH's HCP for saying that his cholesterol was too high (when in fact it sounds perfect). Complete ignorance from people who should know better.

I guess you all get alot of that stuff, my Doctor has always been a pain, I have been saying for Months how tiered have been all he said was stress and work!! his wife died last year who was his partner at practice and his son come in to take her place. Now I'm 53 have Hypertension and Hiatus hernia I receive meds for those, an ex smoker, and by my own admission have been a bit of party animal in the past. I would have thought prime candidate for my affliction, yet it was only his son who suggested me being tested. Maybe he may be a bit more open minded seeing as he is young?? I hope so.

Hi All. Had to register and post a reply. I've been type 2 for three years , and had exactly the same poor advice as everyone else. The test meter is the only method you have of monitoring your blood sugars. The only way i got my Doctor to see reason was when I had taken hundreds of tests and plotted the results in graphs. Following the NHS advice of High carb, low fat diet gives me spikes of over 15 and an hba1c of 8%. I have been on a low carb diet (below 60g carbs per day ) for over 12 months, my bm's are now all below 6.2mmol (over 800 tests), and last hba1c was 5%. I do not restrict protien or fat in my diet eating cheese, cream, fried food, meat etc. My cholesterol is now 2.8, with a ratio of 125% adl to hdl, and very low trigs.

It cost a lot of money for the test strips, over 2000 tests since starting, but its the only way I could manage my health without help. My Doctor is a convert, and has borrowed the book I use as a bible. The book is Diabetes solution by Dr Richrad Bernstein .

Had I took the NHS advice I would have had no control over my condition, and have serious complicatios by now.

Hope you find my story of help.

Just come in and read that your nurse is "one of those" nurses Roy. Bad luck mate. My DSN was initially confused by my approach to start with so she suggested I go see a specialist nurse. Turns out they try to kill you so be warned. She also thought testing SENDS YOU MAD! Strange how that madness only targets T2's and not our T1 friends. Four months down the line and seeing what this low carb stuff can do my DSN and my GP are converts and both say keep doing it as it obviously works. I took my printouts that show my testing regime and exactly what I eat each day to my GP's and I directly asked him if he thought my low carb high fat regime was ok. His reply was "my friend does something very similar and like him you have obviously put your diabetes in remission so eat whatever it takes to keep it there." Likewise my surgery was anti testing but again they have finally relented and prescribed me some strips cos as my DSN says "it patently works for you."

Actually would be fun to start a thread about the reasons why testing doesn't work for T2's. I think the best I've heard was "Sine Waves"...

Hi Pete and welcome. Another low carb success story and brilliant results! If you get a moment think about posting your story in this thread http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=3763 so as many people get to see it as possible.

True 'dat! (sorry, I came over all urban for a moment).

I'm reading a lot of the Paleo stuff right now, and the more I read, the more I realise what a visionary Bernstein was. He had it nailed right from the start. The man deserves a Nobel Prize for his services to diabetics.

I agree with you about Bernstein. I managed to blag my way onto a video conference a few days ago. Three American medical prof's linked up to universities debating the need for individual care plans agreed between doctor and patient.
It's a pity the UK's a decade behind the Americans. Although a friend has told me his Diabetic Nurse is about to be retrained on the benefits of a low carb diet.
I've always been denied access to a consultant, dietician or other specialists, even though my pilots medical stipulates I should see a consultant yearly.

Hello paraglidepete, welcome to the forum it's certainly helping me and I hope it does you. I have been told today that I cannot have my colestrol tablets without going in to see Doctor, just wondering if the nurse has said something along the lines of it's pointless giving him those, he is eating a cow every day and drinking a gallon of double cream, ha ha, But any way I am going to see him tomorrow the younger Doctor of the practice I will also be taking some literature with me along with Dietdoctors web address, I will ask him to look at the talks from Dr Robert Lustig The truth about sugar and also Dr Mary Vernon Low carbs explained when he has chance, and put my point forward after all what has he to lose! "if I keep to the diet" which I have, and go back to see him in a few weeks he may see things a little differently. One thing I am learning is that this Obesity and all the other diseases which stem from HFCS and fructose/Sugar are frightening to say the least. It sickens me to think that all this has been engineered by greed, power and ignorance from the people we are supposed to trust, and who are now having a second go at killing us??????

Wow Roy! That's a pretty impressive transformation "weetabix eating newby" to "low-carb warrior" in under a week.

Proud of you man! Give 'em hell!

Well it's better than accepting something that from all the evidence does not control diabetes, I wont go down winging that's for sure this is round one for me and the gloves are on, and if nothing else it's keeping me going to the last round. I will fight this insipid disease with every thing at my disposal. Ding, Ding.

Thinking about this diet one more positive thing I suffer from acid reflux had it for years, I read that, that goes with low carb diet, so I stopped the pills and I have not had it once since Sunday, normally it comes back within a day or two of me stopping the Tablets time will tell.

Lot's of things will get better.

Off the top of my head low-carbing has cured my:
  • Obesity (almost)
  • Neuropathy
  • Sleep-apnea
  • Thrush
  • Balinitis
  • Candida
  • Hay-fever (not cured, but much improved)
  • Erectile disfunction*
  • Type 2 Diabetes (or at least neutralised it)

* not really, I never had it in the first place.
