Are apples ok for T2 diabetics to eat? I love apples, I eat up to two each day and thought they were healthy but I’ve been told they’re too high in carbs.

Yes, apples are quite high in carbs. However, a saving grace for apples is that they also have a lot of fibre. Many days I eat one apple, but I also try to make sure that it fits within my daily carb allowance. That may mean giving up something else to keep a limit on carb intake.

You need to experiment and see how apples affect your BG levels - we are all different!

Hi @flower2024 , from your other thread I take it you use a glucose meter.
Have you tested before eating an apple and some two hours after to see how an apple affects your blood glucose?

While managing my HBA1c down to normal, I still had weak moments.

An apple was one of them.

I never noticed but other half mentioned I got very chatty and a little hyper afterwards.

So like others mention, try it if you like but test before & 2 hours after .

We're all different, but my guess is you won't make the 2 hour marker successfully .

Good luck tho

Hi @flower2024 have you considered eating half an apple?
For breakfast, I cut half an apple (10 to 12 g of carbs) into small pieces and put it into Greek yoghurt.
Apples are real unprocessed food and have lots of fibre,
so sometimes I have a whole apple (20 to 25 g of carbs) for desert.

Depending what you consider your carb budget, that might work.
And yes, testing your blood sugar before eating and 2 hours afterwards will tell you
how well your body can deal with apples.

Evening @flower2024.

Traditional old English apple varieties, like a crisp and juicy Cox's Orange Pippin for instance, have a kick to them and they're more diabetic friendly than modern cultivars bred for sweetness such as Gala and Golden Delicious.

That said, some of us can no longer handle a whole apple as a mid-afternoon snack between meals. My solution is to incorporate apple peel into salads etc, when apple flavour and colour is required.

I just have one bite or small slice from hubby's.

Berries are the best lower carb fruit. Raspberries, blackberries and blueberries but only small portions

It all depends on context. No food (in my opinion) is "healthy" in itself. That's just marketing.

What does an apple do to your blood glucose level? You find that out by testing before eating and then at the two hour mark. Ideally your body will have dealt with the 20-25g carb by then, but it might not. That's what testing tells you. It might be too much for your system to handle, or it might not.

Secondly, what is your current daily carb intake target? Mine is around 20g/day, so apples are never going to be part of what I eat. If you're aiming for eg 80g, or 120g, daily, you should be able to fit that apple into your plans.

The term "big boned" lol repeatedly told this growing up!
A small apple will spike my levels, but I do as others use the peel in salads and alone with peanut butter, its lovely!

Well this is weird. My blood test reading was lower two hours after eating a whole cox’s apple. I’ll have another go tomorrow to check what’s going on.
Thanks again for your apple and fruit eating suggestions.

It may be you can tolerate apples, we are all different, I can manage a half a green apple as long as it’s with a meal with some fat such as in a slaw or with cheese etc. if I get an unexpected result, either higher or lower than in expect I test test at 3 hours also

You are doing well, but what were the readings?
Note also that we should not (over-)interpret single measurements, which sometimes are outliers.
Repeat the same tests a few times and you will likely see what is going on.
