I have just been reading the UK “Asda Guide for People with Diabetes”. It says:

1. Avoid being overweight

2. Starchy foods should make up the largest part of your diet.

3. Eat less fat, especially saturated fat.

4. Added sugar (sucrose) is acceptable.

On page 4 it says: “base your meals around rice, potato, bread, pasta or cereal”.

On page 5 it says: “All rice, pasta, bread, chapattis, cereals and potatoes .... are great foods”.

Page 6 says: “BREAKFAST: Fruit juice, chopped fruit on cereal, tomatoes on toast, fresh fruit e.g grapefruit, bananas”.

Page 7 recommends: “Semi Skinned & Skimmed Milk & Light Yorguts”.
Page 8 recommends: “Peas, beans, oats, pasta and rice dishes, curries and mince dishes”.

Page 9 suggests: “Diet Coke, Jams, Biscuits, Malted Milk, Scones and plain cakes. Pizzas & Pies”.

Page 10 suggests: “Banana & Date Loaf”.

Page 11 suggests: “ Apple & Pear Crumble. Marmalade Carrot Loaf”

This is the advice from “Commerce”. Now, what are the comments and advice from Diabetics “who have been there = experts”?

Bearing in mind that Type 1's can cover their intake with insulin so this might not involve those who choose to eat like this -t still sounds awful. I would love to have a read of this but can't find it online. Is there a link to an online article?
It might also be an idea to start a fresh topic for this? I'm sure mods can move it for you x

I picked up this leaflet from my local Asda shop when I was in the UK in September 2016. I suppose if you ask Asda online to download a copy for you they would oblige. On the front cover the quote the logo for the "British Diabetic Association" which is now called DB UK - so the leaflet cannot be a "new" one (I hope).

Has anyone on this forum followed those guidelines and maintain their HbA1c in the < 6% range?

Even I think there are some 'interesting' choices on there.
Grapefuit?
Less saturated fat, but mince dishes?

It would be interesting to see the entire leaflet in context.

I think I would be done serious damage before I got half way down the list.

1. Lose weight - we all know it's as easy as saying it, isn't it.

Anyway, nowadays we can't believe 'experts'. You must always take advice from people who have no idea what they are talking about. On the other hand, I don't think a certain Mr Michael Gove would let the paperboy take his appendix out; or maybe I'm wrong

Photograph or scan it. Then post it up?? ;)

Ladybird. I hope you don't assume insulin is some sort of "majic bullet"?? Some T1s don't like the juggling act of living the fairy tale of "bolus for it."

Jaylee - cool your heels dear;) You know (or you should do by now) that I don't assume any such thing, but I've also seen posts on the DCUK Facebook page from type 1's who say they can eat anything if they bolus, and get p*ssed if anyone says differently.
So - let's say I'm covering all angles, shall we?:p

PS. On a less playful note, don't forget my 26 yr old daughter is on insulin, has been for 8 yrs, Type 2 - Novorapid and Lantus. Just saying loike.

PPS. Please note I said those who CHOOSE to eat like this..

As a type 1, I can catergorically state, it is not as easy as covering your intake with insulin. It's a fine balancing act and hard as sh*t to get right. I give up with carbs.
I agree. If you freely eat carbs and cover with insulin you will get nice and fat! I need to carefully control my carbs to avoid weight gain but can control my blood sugar.

When you see advice like that coming from the old BDA you realise how much harm was made to diabetics in the past - effectively poisoning them. It's unbelievable how far ignorance can go.

:)Thank you I will save the hug for a bad day when I feel like throwing my PC out of the window because of these stupid guidelines. Today though has been a good day and I am still smiling about the ignorance and stupidity behind it all. I might be fat, but at least I'm not as stupid as the people who churned out this rubbish. :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

Hello Zand. In Uganda ladies like to be called "fat". Another description is "traditionally built". In one particular tribe, the Bahima, the ladies are bigger than the men (and I mean BIGGER) because they drink lots of fresh milk.

What can't we eat on a Asda diet? They seem to prohibit all foods that will help us control our blood glucose without meds!

It is seriously flawed advice. Which is more than matched by the dieticians that instigated it. Derek

Banana and date loaf!! Seriously!! I'm type 1 and would find that hard! the same with fruit cake, which I love but just avoid as I can't be doing with the after effect!!
I think it is worrying that we are in a so called 'epidemic' and the advice is just plain confusing for everyone! Why are asda qualified to advise on health? Maybe I'm just being naive but I personally wouldn't listen to a supermarket for my health advise...

Hello Nina. Have you ever heard the quote "follow the money"?
