Blood Sugar in High 20's and GP not helping, please advise

Because they like the meals I cook for them, that have potatos in them.

Change the potatoes for celeriac, I bet they hardly notice the difference ;) And it's healthier for them too, get them into good habits early and they hopefully won't end up with diabtes in the future.

How long and what number oven? Don't want to overcook it ;)
I put our ovens on 160 for about 10 mins. I put the slices just on the grilling tray but on thebottom shelf. The thinner the slices the more you just need to watch the top ones.... Its not to actually cook them but to help remove the large qty of water the keep.

Apprently some people salt them and not cook them... Haven't tried that though...

Roast swede is delicious. Once you get a handle on things you can test and see if you can manage a roast potato. use cauli cheese mash as a shepherd's pie topping.

Swede, reminds me of sloppy mashed swede at school! :yuck: But it's worth a try, I've found a lot of new veg to eat over the last few weeks (thanks everyone! ), it's been quite an eye-opener and given me lots of new stuff to eat instead of potatoes.:hungry:
I love roast parsnip, but know that's quite high in carbs, so I hope swede is nice - putting it on my shopping list now!

Scottie1... Would you wholefamily not try eating the same as you for a few days at least a week??

Otherwise its going to be a pain in bum to be honest.. You'll feel different and all the advice to everyone now is to cut the **** carbs.. So why shouldn't you eat as a family..

I bet if you did a breakfast of crispy fried bacon to be used as dippers and 2 boiled eggs for hubby n son instead of cereal that they would love it.....

Or a quick lunch..

One green pepper deseeded and cut in half;
Fill with salmon or mackeral etc that has been mixed with full fat cream cheese..

Baked eggs are fab too:
For 3:
6 eggs
60ml double cream
3-4 teaspoons pesto
40g pine nuts
4-5 basil leaves

Heat oven 160degree
Break all eggs into oven proof dish, pour in cream then add the boursin and pesto. Dot the pesto around eggs. Bake 25 mins. Garnish with pine nuts and basil.

Honest Scottie..my hubby used to be a spud man but he doesn't miss them.

There's some fantastic foods to eat as a family.

Please give us a few foods that they like as well...honestly if they like chicken curry etc encourage them to have the chicken part but for you all to try cauli rice instead..

I fear that if you eating separate dishes to them that you are setting yourself up to fail.

Also, still concerned that your levels are still 20+???

It's lovely. I parboil chunks , drain well then just roast as usual. Go all brown on edges., yummy. I find I can also do a small piece of parsnip without a spike so it is worth testing.

My BG was 19 before I ate so will see what it is in an hour. I'm drinking lots of water and am trying to keep moving but I have not felt well these last couple of days.

I am not sure if my family would like my meals but we can try. I'll have to look into this cauli thing, lots of people have mentioned it.

Hubby and the children eat stew, hotpot, that type of thing. If I cook it for all of us, I couldn't eat the potatos or carrots. Daughter a very picky eater, likes meat etc. but doesn't like potatos unless they are mashed. Son will eat anything. Hubby likes his meat and potato but it's hard to make something complicated as he has to leave for work at 5.15pm. Daughter and son like pasta dishes but hubby doesn't. So I'm a bit stuck. Nobody likes curry etc. so that won't work. Children won't eat chilli but it's something hubby and I can have when the children have pasta. I love fish, so that's an option and am happy with omelletesetc for my dinner but I want to make sure my hubby has something filling before he starts work. We have just eaten traditional food up until now but maybe this is due for a change.

I'm determined not to eat the wrong things and can plan my meals accordingly.

It must be difficult having children that are fussy eaters. I was one of six children, we had two choices, take it or leave it. I suppose I did the same with our two sons.

I'm sure you will beat it Scottie.
Stay with the forum, we ALL wish you well.

O Scottie .. I hope your family can pull together and support you in your new eating habits .. If they ate the same as you (when you get the new foods sorted out) they will also become healthier and happer ( not saying they are not healthey and happy .. But can be even more)
Also please do remember .. When reading the forums you cannot see our faces or hear the tone of our voice .. So if anyone sounds harsh .. They may just trying to sound kind ..or forceful .. Never let anyone upset you in a forum reply .. We all have been in your position of trying to work out what to eat .. And feeling low about having diabites thrust upon us.. and we just want to help

I was too Milly. I think I have pandered to them for too long so maybe this is the wake up call for us all, not just me.

Hi Scottie

Filling up hubby pre work. My hubby works morning shifts currently.. He just takes a small ramekin sized bowl of berries and yogurt or cream to work. He walks 18000 steps a day just at work. He doesn't get hungry and yet he used to have... 3 weetabix and milk, plus flapjack, plus crisps, plus a choc bar!!! He comes home at 3pm and has a no pasta/potato/bread tea. Tonight we just had 6 small meatballs in homemade sauce in a huge bowl. (No pasta). Plus 6 slices of full fat cheese plus 2 dark choc sq and some walnuts and 2 glasses of red wine (well it is Friday).

On late shifts he eats the boiled eggs with bacon dippers or omlette or saus n eggs or berries before work and takes salad with salmon/crustless quiche etc to work...

He has only fell off this eating for one week pre xmas when his work colleagues kept taking in doughnuts and there was free buffet food for a week. It wasn't from getting bored, but because he wanted to be the same as his colleagues. He realised that after putting on 6lb in a week that it wasn't good! So stopped immediately.

Its good to read your familys eating as it helps us to try and help you.

Incidentally. I'm not sure if this advice is correct for type 2's as well but I was always told (type 1 though) not to physically work or work if my bloods were anove 12 because something above that level and exercising can make them go higher.

What is your GP doing about meds to reduce your levels? These higher levels are going on too long.

Scottie, what I was trying to say was from a hubby that pigged on carbs constantly to feel full.... Its fat that can so fill you up and you effectively need less qty to do so.

Your hubby may well feel just as full by eating more fat (but cutting a few carbs out)...my hubby needed to lose weight...

I think it's also because I am not feeling too well, maybe I'm taking things the wrong way.

My anxiety does not help, thank you for your kind words.

Have what they have without the spuds and just give yourself extra veg. Easy.
Celeriac can be mashed just like spuds, try it, daughter might even prefer it to spuds, I do. Add some butter, salt and pepper, can also be used to top shepherds pie, I'm making that tomorrow.
Also try it with mashed with grated cheese, put in ovenproof dish with more grated cheese on top and bake till cheese is toasted. You could ring the changes by adding bacon, tuna flakes, sausages, anything you like and serve with meat/fish, salad or veg.

Explain to them that you have to change your way of eating otherwise you'll be in serious trouble, but that you need their help. Diabetes can run in families so it would be best for them too.
