I have managed to break 2 lantus pens this week. When I turn the dial it will not turn back when I press the button. I now have no pens left to give tonight. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Here's what I do:
1. Screw on needle and remove sheath
2. Hold pen upright, dial in 2 units, tap to remove any bubbles.
3. Press plunger and release. This will eject a bit of insulin.
4. Dial in your dose.
5. Stick pen in your skin and press plunger and hold in place for count of 10.
6. Release plunger.
Job's done!

Always keep a few disposable syringes in reserve so that you can pull insulin direct from a cartridge if a pen breaks....

I don't have any spare pens at all (my clinic and pharmacies don't like handing out spares).

Unfortunately I can't even get the pen to give 2 units of insulin. When the plunger is pushed nothing happens.

Thanks. I will ask about syringes when I am at the pharmacy tomorrow. Thats 2 pens this week I have managed to break.

Disposable

Ok, same principle as a reusable pen.

Yes the needles seem fine. No I can't eject insulin at all

What I have seen happen with some needles, is the plastic screw piece doesn't quite hold the needle in situ?
The needle is sharp at both ends. There can be a little resistance with the cartridge membrane when screwing it down, which in turn might push the the needle out. Thus not allowing the insulin to come out?

Highlighted with the arrow below. The needle may look fixed. But it may not be penitrating the cartridge.

It may also appear to the naked eye longer than the "4mm" (or whatever length.) stated on the box..?
