Hi everyone,

I’m new to all this and feel out of my depth, frightened and just don’t understand.

T2 and I’ve buried my head for a very long time. (Sadly) and I am paying the price now. (Moral of the story is, do NOT bury your head.)

Trying hard to take control of myself and doing a low carb change in eating habits and healthier eating. My blood readings were in the 20+ range and I have managed to get them to 5.6-10 range in the last two weeks.

I’ve never been good at eating 3 meals a day and times don’t eat until the evening. I’m still struggling with this. What I don’t understand is why oh why do my readings go up during the day, when I haven’t eaten anything? My mind tells me they should lower.

I have so many questions for you all but won’t bombard you with them all just yet.

If you are kind enough to take the time to reply, please remember I don’t understand jargon or ”big” words.

Many Thanks.

Your liver dumps sugar when it thinks you're low. If you had high numbers for a long time, and you're fasting, it keeps dumping to get you back to where it thinks you should be. Relax, that'll get less as the liver's stores get depleted and it gets used to the new normal. Quite a few of us have just one or two meals a day. I usually just have a cup of tea for breakfast... https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/ This link might help. But from the sound of it you're making a good start!

Hi @Smiler69 and welcome

You might find this article by Dr Jason Fung (regarded as a bit of a guru when it comes to fasting) interesting. https://www.dietdoctor.com/why-does-blood-sugar-increase-during-a-fast

You may also find that the longer you are able to keep your sugars under control - nice drop in a couple of weeks - the less this occurs. Not true for everyone, but certainly was for me.

Please ask as many questions as you like - this is a great place for advice and support.

Hi Smiler - Welcome.

As others have said, many folks here fast, as part of their diabetes management regimes with some success. In terms of membersmaking suggestions to help you along the way, it would be useful if you could update your profile to indicate if you are taking any meds, and if so what they are. If you take meds, depending on what they actually are, you may need them tweaking as you go along.

To update your profile, if you log into the forum on your browser, then hover ver your name at the top right of the screen, then select Personal Details, then go from there. Don't forget to click save when you've done!

Your body will be taking an opportunity to dump some of the excess sugar you have stored up in your body while you are not shoving more in (i.e.eating). It's a good thing and will eventually stop happening. Depending on how much excess sugar you have stored it may take a while.
I tend to only eat once sometimes twice a day and after just over 3 1/2 years of an ultra low carb (these days virtually zero carb) diet it doesn't happen.
if you are happy eating that way then continue with it as long term you will benefit.

Hi @Smiler69
as i see it, we step off into a plateau.
and your body eventually catches up.

the body doesn't want to die,
so it thinks your trying to kill it
with the reduced intake, so fights back
and gives you enough glucose to get back to where it
THINKS you should be.

But stay consistent and keep eating as you do, and the body will realise its safe,
and lower its levels to what it NOW THINKS you need.

None of this happens today because you eat les yesterday.
so its not linear, you have to persist and teach your
body your safe, in control and serious.

Change will come, just hang on.

I found that my blood glucose would tend to keep going up if I ate nothing, or if I ate just protein and fat - the trick was just a small quantity of carbs - which can amount to a large salad, as my first meal of the day. I can then go all day and eat again in the evening and feel great. I got a meter so I could check on what was happening.
