Covid and Work, Covid Advice and General Chat

My daughter SIL and little granddaughter live in a village about 9 miles away, from Boxing day they will now be in Tier 4 :(

Thank you, and you I hope all works out well.

I really struggled at the school with masks and visors because of my hearing, or lack of it! You certainly don't realise how much you still lip read despite hearing aids. At least with all this social distancing I don't embarrass myself in a pub now when someone asks if I want a drink and I look at my watch and reply it's quarter past nine!! ;)
Is it not possible to lip read through a visor?
I have both Asthma and MG I still wear a mask while in a shop. And I do think those that cannot or just will not wear a mask could use a visor not as good maybe but better than nothing.

That's a good question actually. I guess you can to an extent but lip reading is a funny one. If someone "asks" me to lip read them I can't do it but without thinking about it I obviously do. "However" I also think you need sound as well which helps the brain decide what you are listening to, or that's the way I see it, or should I say hear it!! When I was at the school the masks and visors created a deeper echo sound which my hearing aid struggled to "hear" and that along with more difficulty in lip reading made things very tough.

Hearing is very strange sense. For instance I use headphones and subtitles if possible to watch TV. Without subtitles I can't hear the words in certain accents but with the subtitles I will hear every word because my brain will read the subtitles a milli second before I hear the actor speak. Been deaf for 50 years and still can't really explain it.

All. This thread has wandered a long way off topic over the past couple of days. Although the words ‘general chat’ appear in the thread title, the thread is not in the general chat section and should stick to discussing the original topic, which is about returning to work in the context of Covid.

Thanks.

Tier 4 here in Sussex from Boxing Day so will be keeping my eye on the school situation with interest. WSCC say Coronavirus cases almost doubled in the last week in West Sussex and that will surely rise considering the county is a lower Tier on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Bizarre to say the least.

The school I go to is 23 miles away, so I will look up the town to get the latest Covid 19 updates.

It would seem my input to this thread is redundant as I am retired and shall not be returning to work so I shall bow out.

Edit to add if this thread is in the wrong forum then the mods have had the ability to move it to the general chat forum all along just an observation.

Me too. However I am in a support bubble to provide childcare to allow 2 others to work, so maybe I can still post here...? Tier 3 here we come...

Same here as I resigned from the school anyway so obsolete it seems. Pity as it was good chatting, getting things off our chests, venting and having a bit of a support bubble but there you go.

I'm not returning to work/school either, but for those who are:

The UK has detected two cases of another new variant of coronavirus, the health secretary Matt Hancock says.

The cases in London and north west England are contacts of people who travelled to South Africa, where the variant was discovered.

Travel restrictions with South Africa have been imposed.

Anyone who has travelled there in the past fortnight, and anyone they have been in contact with, are being told to quarantine immediately.

The variant has been causing mounting concern in South Africa, where health minister Zweli Mkhize warned that "young, previously healthy people are now becoming very sick".

I think we still keep on topic a fair bit,and as Max said it's a good support bubble that we can all dip into and contribute to.
It's interesting to think back to when this thread started. I think we all had perceptions about what the process of work and covid would be.
It feels now as if we are probably in a slightly worse position. They dont seem to be saying a lot about the African strain although I have read online that young people are falling ill. Still Margaret Harris says schools are perfectly safe!
I know several teaching assistants who have resigned.
I have had a provisional offer of a position as a job coach! Be interesting to see how that pans out!

@Max68 you are the OP if this thread. If you’d like it moved to General Chat, that can be done.

Maybe the mods can re title the thread "Covid & Work - Covid and General Chat" or similar and move to the General Chat Forum. Must confess living on my own and not seeing family and friends this last 8 months or so means this has been a good sounding board to keep in touch and stop me going crazy!!

EDIT - @Goonergal - You read my mind, as per my post above. So as long as an Arsenal fan doesn't mind doing a West Ham fan a favour then yes please move to General Chat and edit the title appropriately so it's still about Covid, Work etc but also General Chat. That would be most appreciated.

That’s been done for you.
Does General Chat come up in the 'new posts' list?
No, you’ll need to keep the thread on watch to receive alerts about new posts.

Hampshire, my county, with exception of The New Forest, will also go into tier 4 on Boxing day so what will happen with the school in January....... My other job, which i haven't worked in 9 months, keeps us updated , especially with furlough, as its on then off then on, for this month which is good. I have some money, not a big amount, but it's better than nothing at all.

It's worth noting that if you are on some benefits and/or a wage below around £16,000 a year you can get help from Council Tax, Water and Energy. I knew about the Council Tax one but not the other two until recently.
