Hi all,

i keep waking up over 10 in the mornings so did a 3am check...

it only seems if i have dinner/big meal after 8pm i will wake up higher than usual.

did 15 units at about 7.45 for:

  • snickers i had before gym at 6.30 25g carbs
  • sweetcorn 100g 20g carbs
  • fish fingers (dont judge ;)was very tired..) 35g
  • milk 400ml 20g
  • crumpet 18g
total 118g
i then tested at about 10pm and was 6.5... perfect, then the 3am check was 13.7!

what does it mean if it goes high at 3am?

I had the same situation last night. Went to bed at midnight at 6mmol and woke up at 2am at 13.5mmol! I had a big dinner and lots of ice cream after, so I think what happens is that the fat slows down digestion and the result is that the post pradnial spike occurs much later than usual.

The only way to overcome this (if you don't have a pump) is to eat earlier or wake up and correct.

Having said all that, looking at what you ate, it isn't too high in fat .... so maybe the delayed spike wasn't associated with the food? Have you tried eating much earlier or having a very light dinner and seeing if you still get the spike in the middle of the night? Are you comfortable that your basal dose is correct?

ill have to give that a go, these 3am checks are horrible though!

interesting, on the "spike" thing, would you say if you feel the stomach is empty at bed time the spike should be behind you?

What basal insulin are you using?
One dose or two of basal?
Is it only on gym nights when you go high at 3am or every night?
