I watched a programme the other night on Channel 5 called Fat,Sick and nearly Dead.
An Australian called Joe Cross was overweight and on medication for various ailments and went on a juice fast for initially 10 days and it stretched to 60 days and he lost a heap of weight and managed to ditch all of his medication . (He wasn't diabetic as far as I know)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WRgLITXxIk

I have watched this twice now and am very interested.

The programme (and his website) is promoting a juicer called 'Sage' by Heston Blumenthal which is a bells and whistles juicer with a larger aperture at the top which can take a whole apple if need be.

It costs £149 on Amazon and E Bay. You can't seem to buy it for any less.

Right. Questions.

Is there a cheaper way of purchasing a decent juicer?
I ask this as my ex boyfriend bought a £20 one from Lidl that he used once and it went back in the box as it was a nightmare to wash afterwards. Apparently Hestons juicer is easy to clean by running the blades under the tap,

What is the difference between a smoothie maker and a juicer?

And thirdly... On Joe Cross's website I watched a video of him juicing various fruits and vegetables and he used beetroots and carrots and suchlike. Can I use raw beetroot? Beetroot makes me spike when it's cooked.... Same goes for carrots. Does using raw carrots make them more 'diabetic' friendly?

Thanks for reading. Input very welcome !!

Theres your answer right there........its an advert for a very expensive food processor that only does one job, juicing...Why pay £149 for something that your teeth do for nothing?

Fact: when food is processed, juiced for example any carbs in that food stuff are broken down and will become very high on the GI (Glycemic Index) meaning that your stomach doesnt have to break the food down, thats been done in the juicer, so the glucose from any fruits or vegetables that you drink will hit your blood stream hard and fast, just like mashed potato as opposed to a new potato in its skin.

Juicers are a terrible idea for any diabetic IMHO.

Save your money and just eat fresh vegetables that way you will get all the goodness and nutrients without any big glucose hit.

Hello
I saw that too and found his 3 day plan on a different website. I plan to start it on Monday.
I think the difference between juicer and smoothie maker is the smoother leaves all the bits and the juice has a sieve inside so u only get the juice.
I have a smoothie maker so am going to use that and sieve the bits out after. A bit of a faf but I don't want to spend so much money on a juicer till I know how I get on.

Let me know how you get on with it too!

I would agree. I've had a juicer from QVC for years which cost about £80.00. LIDL had an identical looking one recently for £26.00 (might still be lurking around some of their stores). It doesn't take long to halve or quarter fruit. The only thing I use it for now is to juice ginger (just about to savage 1kg of the stuff) which I keep in the fridge and add as concentrate to fizzy water. The 'waste' can still be used for cooking so it's very productive for that. You may as well save yourself the bother of buying fruit in bulk and having to clean the juicer frequently and source some real, fresh juices. Or, you could buy the LIDL one and see how you get on before forking out any more.

But you have to look beyond the initial weight loss period, unless you have plan in place to keep the weight off once you return to normal eating the the weight will eventually come back, couldn't think of anything worse than being on a juice fast diet for 10 days never mind 60

We bought one from John Lewis last weekend as my significant other is convinced it is a positive thing to do. I bought one that is more powerful than the Sage one which I thought was overpriced for what it is although I did pay the same price but I thought it was a better bit of kit.

I seem to be able to eat carrot, ginger and coriander juice in small quantities but have not had much yet.

Nice gadget but as has been suggested I think it has limited uses for a DB.

Diagnosed Type II 1998 1 x 80 mg Gliclazide, 4 x 500mg Metformin and 1 x 100mg Sitagliptin - HbA1c - 48 mmol/mol

Yes, for small quantities of fruit you will spend more time cleaning than juicing. I suppose one could mix some of the 'pith' back in to give the juice a bit of fibre etc. Speaking of kitchen gadgets, what are the unique features of soup makers and smoothie makers?

Another snipper from the 'Reboot' website. I am assuming Joe Cross runs it.
Anyway, there is a nutritionist called Stacey Spencer.

http://www.rebootwithjoe.com/sweetness- ... iabetes-2/

Stacy Kennedy, MPH, RD, CSO, LDN; Reboot Nutritionist

Stacy is the nutritionist for Reboot Your Life. She is a Senior Clinical Nutritionist at Dana Farber Cancer Institute (www.dana-farber.org/nutrition) /Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, writes for online health and nutrition sites and works in private practice. Stacy is a certified personal trainer and fitness instructor through the American College of Sports Medicine. Besides cooking and juicing Stacy loves hiking, yoga and spending time with her family and friends.

Apparently juicing is diabetic friendly...

Juicing is not diabetic friendly the more a food is processed the more.......hang on is this an echo??????

What is a nutritionist?

Nutritionist is a non qualified non professional person, a dietician on the other hand is a qualified regulated professional.

Hi. I agree with Sid. Carrots are much better and lower-GI raw. Tell me - why does anyone cook carrots rather than eating them raw? So, avoid the juicer; sorry.

I'm juicing at the moment, I use kale, apple, spinach, ginger (just a bit), celery and cucumber, once its juiced I pop it in the blender with avocado and linseeds (flax). It makes enough to pop in a mason jar and go in the fridge.
My bs seems to be doing better than it ever has - early days yet tho.
It gets more veg in me than at any other time.
In the evening I have a salad with tuna, sardines or chicken.
Amazon are selling a Phillips juicer at a reasonable price.

Does that mean homemade veg. soup is not good? Also. I eat spuds, pasta and rice al dente. Does that give them a lower GI than if cooked to b.gg.ry.

Re: Fat,Sick and nearly Dead. Juicing. Need some advice plea

I think a smoothie maker is a blender by any other name. A juicer uses centrifugal force to extract the juice through a spinning mesh at high speed and throws the 'dregs' into a collector. All the parts of mine rinse quickly and easily. The mesh bit just needs a gentle brush under a running tap, a bit like cleaning a colander. I suspect you won't find Heston's over a 100 quid better. Suggest you give your LIDL one a 2nd chance.
I've just done 1kg root ginger and there's not much tougher than that.

Unique features? - they are bigger than they need to be but can separate the pulp from the juice very quickly with everything including root veg whereas a blender does not although I expect everyone knows that already.

I am the only DB in our house of 5 so for them it is healthier than processed foods and a novelty so gets used by the kids which is better than juice from concentrates like most available other than the expensive ones.

Thanks. I didn't appreciate they separate pulp from juice. I thought they were soft fruit only.
