Diabetes & work.
I was put on MDI when i was about 20? In a galaxy long time ago....
I was given two types of insulin & a couple of fancy new pen things. A leaflet with a wave graph on how the insulin works with food & sent on my way. The same time i passed an interview pending a medical for a job in the NHS.
I was technically "fit to work".. More than..But my lack of knowledge about the new MDI regime of D management at the time rang alarm bells with the Doc at the physical & i lost out..
The lesson? Get clued up.. If i had known what i was talking about, the job would have been in the bag.. Since then i have been offered all sorts of surprising opportunities.. Including a HGV driver job if i wanted it within a company i was already employed.. When i owned up to being diabetic to cover my back my gaffer was unconcerned..
Relationships.
I only ever had on issue that made me think.. One ex tried to retain my insulin when i left which somewhat put a "vulnerable spin" on it. The emotion was somewhat mixed what she would do with it in my absence.. She had a habit of self harm & staging overdoses...
I cant complain about any other relationship. i moved on & am now happily married!
Friends.
"Back in the day" known formerly as the "diabetic kid". My friends respected my lack of indulgence on a night out.
The same with drugs.. It was like "talking to Frank" with most of them advising that i passed up on certain substances due to the D. lol
All in our mid forties now some of em are in a worst condition than me & look older than the years..
Some friends i've lost track of simply because the went off to have kids....
One friend is HIV+ but still lives life to the full (within reason) & I've never seen the guy without a smile on his face..
