Hello all, I am new to the forum and diabetes I have been feeling unwell for a very long time years, well i went away with friends on holiday and started to moan about feeling ****.
A friend of one of the other lads asked if I was diabetic and I said no, he explained that he was diabetic and asked if he could check my blood I agreed and it was at 38.9 on his little machine. Wow he said that's high you need to be checked out, but we were away for 2 weeks and it stayed in the thirties all the time we were there.
When I got home I was admitted in to hospital where I was told I was now a diabetic, they kept me in for a few days then told me to go home rest up for a few days and get my doctor to start my meds, I have been on 1000mlg of metformin and 80mlg of some other.
My question is how long until I start to feel well I still feel so run down and like I have a big weight in my head that moves from side to side as I move my head dry mouth, weak as a kitten my legs don't seem to do what I want them to my vision is still fuzzy.
I know people live a good happy life when they are diabetic but surly don't feel like this.
Any thoughts anyone please is 38 really that bad I am around low to mid twenties now eating no sugar very low carbs.

Hope you can help.

You need to go back to your gp urgently.
How many carbs do you eat in an average day? Give a days food to us.. It will help any type 2 giving advice ..
Have you been given a meter n strips or using your friends?

What size are you?

How long you been on meds now?

My diet is pretty much the same each day, two slice brown toast in the morning, low fat yogurt for dinner and chicken breast with salad, thats what I have had for the last 2 days, I was in hospital mon tue wed.
I have my own meter now and the doctor told me to do the test around 11 in the morning and thats what I am doing, my reading today was 21.7 so not that bad but I feel so weak. they started meds on tue, I am a large fella 6ft 20 stone

My goodness what an experience you have been through. It was lucky your friend had a meter with him. Your reading is still very high. Im sure someone will be along soon with some detailed information to help. I hope you are soon feeling a lot better:)

I'm not surprised you feel weak. 21.7 is high. The two slices of toast are probably causing the 21.7 reading at 11:00am. You also need to know what your reading is when you wake up and at other times too. Things like fried bacon and egg with mushrooms for breakfast will be satisfying and will have less impact on your readings.

just tested my blood now it is 18.9 had my dinner at 19.30 feel worse now than I did at 38 strange, but really fed up feeling like this. if I had a gun I would shoot myself.

You are not eating enough fat for starters... My food was like that without the toast for breakfast.. And a light lunch n dinner.. Wrong....

Sorry... You need to, if you can to cut the toast in mornings....try some berries with full fat greek yogurt or cream, or fried eggs n bacon with mushrooms...(No bread)

You have got a diet completely stripped of fat... Have you got a specific reason for this..

If you cut carbs you must have another source of energy.. Believe me, I have had probs from low/no fat and low carbs.

Are you needing to lose some weight?

Hello Hoping. You have started your medication haven't you? Did the hospital give you any ideas of when you may need to return? You wont always feel like this. It will get better honestly:)

You've been diabetic for a while, so you need to bring your BS down slowly, not quickly.
Take it slowly, bring your BS and weight down and you'll start to feel better.

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

Have you been reading (books, internet, anything?) about diabetes?

If not, I heartily recommend the books and links listed in my signature.

The reality is that it is the carbohydrates that you eat which send your bloodsugar up. There are lots of different diets that diabetics use, but the consistent thing is that they watch how many carbs they eat.

If your bloodsugar has been running high for a while then I strongly suggest you cut the carbs down gradually. Sharp drops in bloodsugar (going cold turkey on carbs ;)) can make you feel bad as your body adjusts. Gentle downward steps are kinder.

Maybe swap one of those slices of toast for some scrambled eggs tomorrow.
Then replace the other slice with bacon or a sausage on Monday.
And there you go - a good breakfast that won't send your bloodsugar too high.

What do you eat as snacks?
Do you have sugar in your drinks?
Drink pop?
These are all sources of carbs that mess us up.

Try to read some of @ally1 postings.. She been in hosp in 30's, she changed her diet to lchf and is going great guns getting her levels down. She not quite there yet, but is finding out her meds and her foods that she can tolerate...

I will say this though... You cannot stick to this food that you listed for the rest of your life. You need variety and some fat.

It may well be that you need different meds, and I would go back to your gp or dsn for a review as soon as you can.

You need to test more than once a day... When you wake, and after food as a minimum until your levels drop.

I'm not a type 2, but type 1 so hopefully a type 2 will come along in a short while....

They will need to know if there are reasons for low fat... And what size you are.. Ie do you need to lose weight.. Then they can suggest options open to you...

6 ft, 20 stone?

I'm type 2, I certainly avoided fats, kept some carbs in, and got to the results in my sig.

Then I changed to a different diet, but still avoid high fat.
Slowly in the keyword here.

Hi. Yes, 38 was extremely high and anything over 20 needs careful attention. At 20 stone you will have insulin resistance which the metformin will help with but you must seriously low-carb until things stabilise. Set your self a limit of, say 150gm/day or even less. Some would say to stay below 100gms at the moment. Yes have enough fat and protein. Avoid toast and watch low-fat yogurts as they may be sugar loaded. Do read all the packs. Let us know how you get on

OP's Current diet if that includes all carbs is WAY lower than 150 carbs... Depending on yogurt and whether any cut up apple or sultanas etc in salad could be well below 100g too.. Which when you look at the fat... There is zilch compared to carbs.

There is no energy source....

I am not saying high fat at all... But blimey, there has to be some.. This person is surviving with a 20st frame currently eating little more than a starvation diet....

There has to be some energy added in somewhere and carbs would not be tolerated well currently....so full fat cheese, full fat milk, full fat yogurt or cream... Just something to give some energy and muscle/organ strength....brain needs SOME fat... I am not talking about high fat @douglas99
