Finger tips loss of feeling

Hi,

First time posting on here, keen to here about other peoples experiences.

Recently my finger tips have started to tingle, feel like they're cold, numbness to them, feel constantly swollen. I've had type 1 for 38 years and first time I've experienced this and unsure what's going on. I am now in the waiting list to the neurology department at the hospital but have been advised it's around 12months to be seen.

Interested to here about similar experiences and advice.

Hi Will, I'm not T1, but have you already had some tests, like bloods, to ensure nothing is awry there? Simple things, like low Vitamin B12 levels can cause tingling in the extremities and so on.

What, if any other tests have you had done?
 
Had recent blood tests done when visiting doctors recently, didn't come back with anything relating to low blood and so on.
 
What are your blood sugars like? If (and that is a big if) it is a diabetic complication then tightening your control may help.....

I believe @KennyA had symptoms of neuropathy when first diagnosed T2 but this mostly went away when he reduced his bg levels?

Hi W1LLP

First thing to say is that I am not going to guess at what you might have. Diabetes is one of the most common causes of neuropathy, but there are others, and there are things that seem to be neuropathy but aren't. Some of those have been mentioned already. I had neuropathy-like sensations from a pinched shoulder nerve - went away with a bit of physio.

My neuropathy was/is entirely in my feet - it tends to go for the longest nerves so feet get it first. Mine has largely gone since getting my blood glucose levels under control - my symptoms started when I had an HbA1c around 43/44. I have a residual tingle still, and after four years (A1c 34-38 during that time) that's probably permanent, but I wouldn't say it's pain.

The current text book (Bilous and Donnelly) is OK on descriptions of neuropathy but there is next to nothing about treatment, relief of pain etc. They do seem to advise dics to be a bit cautious about jumping to conclusions and advise no neuropathy diagnosis unless a minimum of "two abnornalities" have been detected.
