I've been struggling with my diabetes for about a year now. ever since I've got bullied for it in the past. I go through stages in which I don't do my finger pricks or use my pump. everyone's saying it's easy to do and I'm being silly for not doing it. they don't know what it's like or what it feels like for doing it for so many years now. I've seen my sister not struggle and be the perfect diabetic but I'm not.. I'm so stuck on what to do.. I can't seem to get out of this phase of not doing my finger pricks and injections... I don't know what to do anymore or how to cope.
 
If you can't talk to your sister (the model for your goals) then we'll struggle to help. She should be the person you try to emulate. This is you so please do something and set yourself some targets. You CAN do it

Not easy to have a perfect sister. I have two of them!:) Do not compare yourself to her and try to set your own goals. We are all different and we cope with things differently. Having type 1 is not easy and we all struggle from time to time. Its extremely mentally tiring as we need to deal with it day and night. Constant testing, injections, carb counting and making decisions regarding our sugar levels basically all the time. When I have a full hour in my day, when I don't think about my diabetes I feel very lucky. It doesn't happen very often though:( There is a thread somewhere on the forum called diabetes burnout. Search for it and have a look. There is lots of support and good advice. Good luck:)

Were you managing ok until you got bullied? If so, and it was the bullying that was the start of your difficulties, then don't let the bullies win! Bullies aren't strong people - they're weak people who have low self esteem and bully other people to make themselves feel better.

You're stronger than them.

Don't worry about your sister. Your goal is to be the best YOU can. Diabetes, unfortunately, isn't one of those things you can ignore. If you ignore it, you're giving it power. If you can control it, you can limit its power and 'put it back in its cage'.

Is there anyone you can speak? Your DSN? Parents? A friend?

Try to set yourself small goals eg to do a blood test before each meal. Aim to take back control gradually. If you speak to your DSN, you'll find out that you're not the only one having problems. It is hard, but there are people who can help and support you.

thankyou everyone for the support, I do speak to people about it but they don't seem to understand as they don't have it and just say that if it was them they'd find it easy and my family understand but I find it hard talking to them because I feel like I'm disappointing them by keeping putting the stress on them!

A start is to definitely do the finger pricks. You will not know how you are/your condition if you don't test. Don't think that you are alone, most will undergo this phase at one point in their lives and there are many going through same the motions currently. There is always support on here and at home. And whilst it does suck being on the recieving end of a **** condition, it can be improved, it doesn't have to seem like a life sentence if you are prepared to do something about it.
Think in this by Theodore Roosevelt - "if you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn't sit for a month".
 
Hi, I'm kirsty and I'm 15, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2011 and recently I've been really struggling with it. I'm getting tired of talking injections and that makes me not want to test my blood cause I know it's high and will give me a bad reading. I currently have a clinic visit in 3 days and I don't want to go cause I haven't tested my sugars much recently or took any control. I don't know what to do and was wondering if anyone can relate?
 
Heaps of us can and especially people your age. Ask to get in touch with them here and they'll help :)
 
Hi alishaa. Please do as Mike D suggests.If you can't speak to your sister please make an appointment with your G.P. If you're ill from not attempting to manage your diabetes you will eventually land up in A&E and what's worse than being confined in a hospital bed while your friends are enjoying themselves.
 
You must try to do your blood tests and have your insulin and correct food at the correct times.Can you speak to your parents or your diabetic team.By not doing things correctly now you may well loose weight and feel really rough.Why not speak to your G.P. Be honest to him and he should listen and then can guide you which person is the best professional person for you to see.

Well we have it and we aren't perfect and don't find it easy. Well I don't anyway...
What they say does not count and all that matters is you take care of yourself.
 
Hi, I have been having the same problems for a long time & still haven't managed to take control back. I have however seen a new consultant whom is very supportive & understanding (they said that there is no situation they haven't seen or can't work around). My answer for the time being has been to agree to my husband giving me insulin before I am awake, the hospital are doing regular bloods & I was told not to worry about doing finger prick if results were making me feel worse. All they have asked of me is that I allow the injection & I note down if I have any hypos. Is there anybody you can trust to do this for you?;)

This thread is more than 6 months old. The OP hasn't been online for a number of months, but I'm sure we all hope she's doing well.

Hopefully she'll update us next time she visits the forum :)
 
See your consultant and don't hide anything.. Just say exactly how you feel and ask ghem if they have any people that you can talk to to try and help you.

Nurses (at least all of my last 3 hospitals) are fantastic at helping.. One nurse I know at my old hospital specialises in helping youngsters that are struggling...

Please phone or speak or see somebody... Many clinics can and do offer support to persons struggling. Believe me, there are many T1's in this boat..
