Good Guys

Viv if it were not blatantly obvious that you were an honest woman already i would offer my hand

Well said girl

both my dietician and dn are brilliant, both know i lower carb to what i did although i do still eat some carbs, i hardly inject much insulin now ,my hba is 5.9 from 7.2 and both tha above good guys are totally with me :D

I am dedicating my GP who never talks to me about my diet, he lives it to me. He is only interested in the results I show him and till now we both are very happy with all the results. Last time I saw him he said "You are taking this very seriously aren't you? Your Hb1Ac is down to 6.4% from 6.6%, well done." He also put the test strips on repeat prescription from day one and encourages me to test 3 times a day, not a lot maybe but still helps to find out what makes my BG go up.

I would like to nominate my DN, Jo, who is hugely encouraging, open-minded and extremely knowledgeable about diabetes management. She focusses on results, is well-infomed about a reduced carb approach as a treatment option, is always up to date about new treatment regimes and research and encourages patients to take responsibility for controlling their BG in a holistic way including diet and exercise rather than just increasing medication. She also advocates regular blood testing for T2's, has no problem prescribing testing strips and has made the GP practice where she works a great example of how diabetes care should be.

The sad news is she's due to retire soon :(

Welcome back Mrs Pugwash, you have been missed.

I have had a number of personal problems over the last few months which have kept me immensely distracted and busy and still do to some extent, so whilst I won't be able to post very much due to a startling lack of free time, I will be here as often as possible in the virtual flesh (and definitely not a figment!) :D

Thanks everyone for your kind welcome back and thanks Sue, things are improving slowly so hopeful of regaining my free time in the not too distant future!

Anyone else think a figment sounds like something nice to go with a mature cheddar??

I am also delighted to see you back, Mrs Pugwash. I hope, whatever problems you are having to deal with away from the forum, they will soon resolve themselves and we can once again enjoy your refreshing and helpful input.

MrsP.

Hi. i don't know you, but I hear you are one of the good guys around here. That's plenty good enough for me. Welcome back.

Ken :D

Mrs. Pugwash! Thrilled skinny to have you back on the forum. Rumours of your demise were clearly exaggerated. I hope things settle down for you now and wish you the very best.

Dennis, thank you for that suggestion and in fact, one of my work colleagues had told me about it and i tried it for 3 weeks until i ran out. I've a terrible memory and keep forgetting to replace it because i did find it helped.

My GP actually recommends this (and provided some supporting papers), mother has been taking glucosamine and chondroitin with considerable success for years now.

Two things: it doesn't necessarily work for everyone (but as you had a positive response then you're presumably not one of them), and it usually takes a few weeks to build up to effective levels so you stopped just at the wrong time!

Oh third thing: it may increase BG, though not many people seem to find this in Real Life.

Otherwise you are doing brilliantly!

Can anyone tell my why GP's bury their head in the sand with type II and testing. Surely it is important for us to know what is going on with our sugars rather than rely on testing once a week. My GP absolutely hates prescribing test sticks for me (even when I have to take steroids for my asthma and my sugars rise to 20!) he just says no need for testing so much!

It's plain and simple COST.

Often it isn't the GPs but the non-medically-trained accountants or practice managers who dictate this. certainly true here, when the PCT was set up they "discovered" they were £9 million further in debt than they expected, so they have been saving pennies everywhere.

Don't forget most of them see a rapid decline, increasing meds, insulin, amputations and retinopathy as inevitable so they are saving money now to spend on us later.

Ally, you seem to miss the point of this forum. All the diabetics on here are dedicated to helping their own and others diabetes. These are not the constant noncompliant no hopers that you keep talking about but well researched and educated people who are trying to control their diabetes by whatever way possible to further their health.

A common mistake made by religious zealots like Ally is to only see the particular people or the particular forum they are attacking.

Over time I have poked my nose into most of the other newsgroups and forums, many blogs (mostly not even concerning diabetes but other conditions which are also greatly improved by a realistic diet) and the numbers of people doing significantly better than expected by their medical professionals must run into the thousands.

There are a few exceptions. The ADA Forum is actually very good, but there's an absolutely dire Yahoo! group (maybe more than one) and this forum is officially supported by DUK

http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/index.htm

(NOT to be confused with a different and rather good forum)

Ally would immediately be at home there because the posters are forbidden to recommend any change in diet or treatment from what their doctors have imposed.

Those who post here of the virtues of restricted carb intake, do so with evidence of their own excellent results, mine included, and I constantly see comments such as ‘it may not work for all, but it sure works for me!’. When I saw those comments, I decided that I would try it for myself and see what happened. Why? Because for a year I had been following the advice of both my Dr and my DIETICIAN, and for all that time my BG levels remained steady at around 10 – 11.

Following A LOT of research, both here and other sources, I now have my levels down to around 5 – 6, I feel SO much better, and I am finally beginning to lose weight.

I have absolutely no doubt that your lipids will also improve significantly. Although my BG has never been far into diabetic numbers, my lipids ("diabetic dyslipidemia") were truly appalling and got worse on the dietician's high carb low fat diet, so much so that I was accused of noncompliance. Today HDL 1.4 LDL 2.4 trigs 0.7 (have been 0.44 which is 10% of what they were, the HDL has doubled) which has come about through doing the exact opposite of what I was told. Strangely this is not uncommon.

Cardiologist William Davis recommends in US figures a target of 60 - 60 - 60, I am 55 - 94 - 62
