Gp's And Obesity

The BMI chart that the doctors use upsets so many people because according to the "BMI chart" you are overweight or obese!! People are so different, the BMI chart does not take into account if you are a Mesomorph, Endomorph or Ectomorph. Also you could be heavily muscled with very little fat but according to the BMI chart you are obese!!

The word obese has also changed in meaning over the last 10 years or so, at least in general usage. It used to only apply to those extremely and very obviously overweight.

To be quite candid I think someone here should suggest a protocol or flow diagram that helps the obese deal with their issues in bite sized portions.

First on my list would be a diet that gets the obese in harmony with non metabolic syndrome limits. That is, apart from weight.

If it wasnt sorted then one would have to deal with other issues:
diabetic and non diabetic.
Re: Is other disease present? Is this caused by gut biome? Self image, abuse, mobility, past health damage etc.

There are obese individuals who have a perfect metabolic score according to Ivor Cummings and their those like Bulkbiker who reverse their obesity and diabetes.

Clearly the cure of obesity when it comes to bypassing parts of the gut is a very difficult thing to embark on.
And not a cure all, they can have other issues.

It is possible for all to lose weight but the torture that causes is too much to tolerate.
We know that the expression of our genes can change. Identical twins seperated at birth and living different lifestyles can have different metabolisms.

Hi teddy,
I don't think such individual are much bothered about self image and if their not subject to metabolic disease they fall outside the net.

A better measure is waist round navel divided into height it should be greater than 2.

It would be more useful to have a protocol or flow diagram for GPs and other HCPs to deal with the issues of not recognising that the accepted protocol of recommending diet of carbs with every meal, fruit, low fat products, etc, etc, has created a huge problem for so many. Add in to the protocol that obese people are very likely to be pretty angry and demoralised that the people advising them, go on to treat them with contempt and ridicule, when the said advice they have followed does not work.

I do agree but any one of us can look in the mirror and KNOW whether we are fat or not. Who really cares what their BMI score is?

I'm interested Derek how your daughter the GP would firstly start to talk about obesity with a patient and then what dietary advice she would give? I'm hoping you have pointed her towards this site for her Type 2 patients anyway...

Hi Everyone,

Just to let you all know that a post has been deleted from this thread for inappropriate comparisons between starving prisoners of war and obese people. Not only are such comments deeply offensive to many members, they are also off topic and likely to derail the thread.

Any further posts along the same lines will also be removed.

Personally I would rather see the post and have a moderator point out that it might be offensive and no similar posts will be allowed. In this case your description lets me make a guess but in general "along the same lines" is difficult to judge when you haven't seen the post.

Offensive posts are removed as per the forum rules, and a post is left explaining why, also according to the forum rules.

Leaving offensive content on the open forum would prevent this forum being place for members to feel able to have polite discussions.

In that case I am going to report a post that I found to be offensive to me in another thread. The original post which offended me was allowed to remain yet another post (which I never saw) was removed. I was hurt by the comment

Thanks, I will answer your post when I get the time.
It's complex, it is difficult in areas where there is lot of poor people to get anywhere near the right diet.

Members are welcome to report any post that they consider to be offensive. The moderation team will consider the report and decide whether the post needs to be removed. This means that not every reported post is removed (while some posts are removed by moderators before the reports start coming in). Since we all have different levels at which we take offence, the moderation team reach a team decision, which is then final.

Zand, I am sure you know this already, but I felt it necessary to explain for anyone new to the forum who might assume that any post they report would automatically be removed - which isn’t the case.

Yes that's cool. I was just thinking that maybe I was too tolerant of a post which was aimed at me (and which I have now reported) It hurt me quite a lot at the time but I didn't want to make a fuss. Like I said I have reported it now....so over to you guys. Thanks. :)

Well I agree with the Moderators, that is their job and what they have been voted in to do. We do not ALL need to see the post, we rely on them to identify such a post at any stage and should respect their judgement to remove it. Well done!

To get back to the discussion. Education must be a first step. I feel that the pervading attitude of overeating being cited by those who took part in the poll as the cause of obesity must be addressed. I genuinely feel that replacing nutrient poor, stodgy foods with nutrient dense satisfying foods is the way to go in whatever guise that comes in. I do not have the same appetite as my son does so our portion sizes differ which tells me that another important message that everyone needs to take away is that a tailored approach is more likely to work rather than a generic one size fits all, blanket approach.

A lack of knowledge does seem to allow sweeping generalisations to creep in.

In the 20+yrs I lived in the South of England I didnt experience bullying over being obese, even from GPs.
Like up north GPs see the overweight body then the ailment.
NHS are obesity bias. All over the UK, however my Sunderland endo/diabesity specialist was only one who discussed bariatric surgery. He could see me adding from insulin therapy without it being for a pregnancy and foreseen how it disabled his patients more without DRASTIC weight loss. A drastic diet or in his words.... fad diet. (LCHF).
Any restricted diet can cause weight change.
I'm going for bariatric AND lower carbs, in ratio. I won't be risking very low weight loss after such a major operation. After all I lose nothing when I barely eat but if high carb replacement to calories then I add. No way will I risk that after all the effort I've made and pain I will experience. I will be taking no chances.
My GP's will just see a successful weight loss operation. Until I'm asked how I've conned my body into reversal. Fingers crossed. I hope its successful in stalling my diabetes progression, most of all. GPs will hopefully SEE my huge complimentary efforts. Maybe.
