Type of diabetes
Type 2
Treatment type
Diet only
Hi there,
I am new diabetic, I was diagnosed in October / November. I am type 2.
I have done a low carb diet since finding out, I have lost 2.5 stone or 16 kg so far.
I bought a kit to check my glucose and it seems to be normal apart from after I have eaten.
I know it is a 12 week range, but if your normal for say 9 - 10 weeks, but really high at the start will the high still be shown?

It'll influence the next HBA1C but not as much as you think it might given the averages IF you sustain the lower numbers from hereon in

When you say normal apart from after you have eaten - what sort of numbers are you getting?
Usually, when people see high numbers after eating they reduce the amount of carbs next time they have a similar meal, by reducing or replacing the high carb foods.

If you could toss a few more numbers out there, that'd be helpful. The aim is not to get a rise of more than 2.0 mmol/l between before a meal and 2 hours after the first bite. If you're seeing higher numbers/discrepancies, you might want to re-evaluate the food. What's a usual day look like, food-wise? Maybe we can help you tweak things?
Anyway, welcome!

I'm still not sure where the 2mmol/l rise comes from? I haunt found it any where else but on these forums? There was a thread a while ago trying to get to the bottom of it but i don't think any one came up with a reason?

Hi Snoopy, I asked my DN about this and they said that in a 'normal' person there would be a rise of no more than 2mmol following a meal, so they take that as an indication of how a non diabetic body processes carbs.

Well done on the weight loss.
I will get my hba1c in January prior to a review and am dreading the fact that included in the averages will be a period of high blood sugars caused by an injury and subsequent cortisol jab!
I do understand that my latter blood sugars will influence the score more than the former ones though so fingers crossed.
It is not rational to worry about something that has happened in the past and cannot be changed but I think we all feel judged by our hba1c whether that is by health professionals or by ourselves; going forward you could focus in on what you have control over now e.g. testing at useful times, learning from that and making the best food choices you can to maintain your fat loss.

cheers guys, the number usual when waking it between 4.5 and 6.0, after a meal can between 6.5 and 8.0, before bed 4.5 and 6.0. Some morning I can have a higher blood sugar level. Like the morning it was 7.8. But my morning walk usually lower it back below 6.
I am asking because of this I am the type of person, when I put my mind to something I cant let go. My goal now is to try and reverse and maintain it as soon as possible.

From the figures you quote it is most likely that at the worst your next HbA1C will show you to be in the pre-diabetic range, or possibly even in the normal range - so keep it up and there is no need to be concerned.
