hello I'm worried and upset

Hi folks...I am Susan, 47 from Scotland. Been diagnosed type 2 since Feb currently trying for diet control. I have chronic depression and a compulsive eating issue but I love sports and am working on changes...stopped smoking 3+mths ago :D
My worry is about my foot.
I had a bunion operation 7 weeks ago. It went great but I developed at staph aureous wound infection which is proving difficult to get rid of. I am on my 3rd course of antibiotics and my surgeon said he would wash it out in theatre if this didnt work. I'll see him again on Tuesday. My concern is that I am going to end up with an osteomyelitis bone infection that could ultimately lead to amputation. In other words I've got myself all wound up and am catastrophising. I dont really have anybody I can talk to so would appreciate a bit of support
 
Hello Susan.

as you say, you are catastrophising. But that is perfectly understandable.

The surgeon has got the situation well in hand (or foot) and will take care of you. They will keep changing and/or giving antibiotics until they find the one which works.

There are many treatments before it could ever get to the stage of amputation, really and truly there are.

sending hugs (if you dont mind them from a stranger). Its a scry time and I think you are doing really well to cope with all this as well as you are.

and giving up smoking is a really big deal. Well done.

Hello susan and welcome. I'm sorry to hear of your foot problems and when you go to have the infection washed out, make sure you ask dierct questions about your concerns, because it is obviously worrying for you. I know how difficult this is, but try not to get yourself too stressed, difficult I know.

Good luck Susan and I will be thinking of you. I am from a scottish background and Scotland is such a wonderful country, I have so many relatives there :D

I am sorry you are having such a bad time I have no experience of what you are suffering so I can only say try not to look on the negative side of things I know it is hard but if you try to think positively you will feel better alround

Hi Susan and welcome to the forum.

Good for you for quitting smoking, its not easy is it so well done and keep it up :thumbup:

As for your wound, as others have said as long as your care team are on top of things you should have no problems, wounds, especially on our extremities can take a while heal, which is why diabetics are told to take care of our feet, but you sound as though you are being well looked after so try to relax a little.

Do you know if the doc did Gram testing to see if its a positive or negative infection?

Going back a while I was being treated for a -ve infection when it turned out to be +ve. After I was tested and treated with the right substance, it all cleared up just fine.

It might be worth asking if all the relevant tests were done when you see him/her on Tuesday.

Hope your foot clears OK.

Seriously - & don't be squeamish - ask about maggot therapy - a pouch of the little beasties placed over a wound resistant to antibiotics, etc, eats the diseased tissue & often promotes healing.

I suspect your worries are normal. I hope so as I got in a stew about quite a small cut under my toes. My husband got so fed up with me going on about it that he made me take it to the nurse [well all of me went not just the foot]
She was very kind and understanding about it and my worries and in fact put me on some antibiotics and cream stuff and was quite insistant that I should NOT just frett but rather go to her.
I am therefore sure it is OK for you to worry but I hope all goes better soon
