Hello wise ones. I woke up feeling fine this morning. Blood sugars at expected levels pre and post breakfast. Half way through a cup of black coffee about an hour ago I came over all nauseous and shakey. Checked my blood sugar and BP, both at expected levels. Just had to sprint to the bathroom, both ends poorly :(
Sick day rules suggest fluids only, (I couldn’t eat anyway). But the fluids they suggest are all sweet or carby things I don’t have in the house and in any case my reading is now 6.3 up from 5.7 an hour ago. What should I do please?
I’m just sipping sugar free squash at the moment.

Personally Id go with a mix throughout the day of water, sugar free squash, and hot water with marmite or veg bouillon (to replace electrolytes) until things settled down.Id combine that with loads of sleep or a neglected box set that I could couch potato to. I would have to pay some attention to BG as Im on Gliclazide, but if I wasnt on strong BG lowering meds Id ignore BG for a few days
Hope you feel better soon

Back in bed resting up now. Good point about the electrolytes, I have Marmite in the kitchen, not sure I could stomach it just now but will have some when I can. Thanks for your advice and good wishes.

Poor you @Rachox
It sounds like a touch (or more than a touch) of food poisoning. Similar happened to me 8 years ago when in a holiday cottage on our first night there. I was totally fine, then had to run to the bathroom and to put it mildly, I didn't know which way to turn. :yuck: Better out than in. So I sympathise. I wasn't diabetic then. I changed into a dressing gown and slobbed on the sofa with cups of tea and TV then went to bed very early. Next morning I was back to normal.

All I can suggest is rest, slob, relax, and drink plenty of fluids that you would normally drink. I hope you recover as quickly as I did.

Take care @Rachox was it something you ate do you think or a virus?
Rest up keep the fluids going I just add a bit of salt to my fluids when fasting to stop me cramping which I do without the salts. if you add to the squash you are sipping already you prob wouldn’t even notice the taste otherwise suggest just resting and letting it pass through your body. Thinking of you

@Rachox - Don't worry about eating anything unless you feel like it, but do keep the fluids up and if you can't face the odd mug of broth, thena little salt in squash should help.

I'm rarely sick and even less rarely unwell in all directions, so you have my sympathies.

do you have any bovril or oxo cubes in the house or within reach of buying? they are great for salt, and electrolytes at such times and I keep some in the house

good healing vibes also being sent.

@Rachox sorry to read you're feeling poorly. Not much to add in terms of advice as ^^^^ seem to have covered the bases, fluids and salts are best at the moment, food later, when you feel more like the thing.

These rules are for people on inslin, as they must keep taking their inslin to avoid DKA. For you just drink water or tea.

Sounds like low blood pressure to me.

Have you checked your blood pressure?

Thank you everyone for your advice and concern. Anyway I went to bed and have woken up about 3 hours later, I feel tired and I have a headache, blood sugar back down to where I’d expect for this time of day and stomach feels ok I think! Just having a coffee with a pinch of pink Himalayan salt, see if that stays down!

Sounds like a great start to a water fast? Just saying.. I did start a 7 day fast after a bout of norovirus..

Just checking, @Rachox you eat v low carb/keto don’t you?
And you have done so for months, so you are probably fat adapted?

In which case, don’t worry about needing to eat anything.
Your body can cope with fasting for days without ill effects.

You do need to keep hydrated though. Sipping lukewarm water is a good thing.

When I had a tummy bug a while back, i found that hot drinks got cold before i wanted to drink them, sweet drinks and unsweetened herb teas were cloying and sickly, cold drinks sent my guts into spasm, and anything with milk or cream (like a cup of tea) would just go STRAIGHT through. So sips of tepid water, it was. :)

Oh, and you are on metformin, arent you? The patient info for Met is very clear: should only be taken with food, to avoid chance of digestive upset - which is likely the last thing you need at the mo!

So take it easy, fluids up, metformin under advisement (check with doc or pharmacist, if in doubt) and when you feel like food again, there is nothing (IMHO) better than chicken broth and chicken soup.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you. I don’t claim to be keto, just low carb and yes for nearly a year now! I’ve just had a lukewarm black coffee with a pinch of salt, actually tasted ok(!) and I have a glass of SF squash lined up next to me. I took my Metformin this morning before I was ill, I’ll see if I feel like eating later, otherwise I’ll omit this evening’s dose, I hadn’t thought of that little problem.
Thanks for the advice x

Sorry to hear you’re not well @Rachox

Agree will all the advice to keep the fluids up, with a bit of salt and no need to eat unless you feel like it. I tend to think that when ill, if you feel like eating something it’s probably OK to do so.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.
