Was told by my gp i have it. Not the end of the world yet but i have burning questions. I did get told no sweet no coke until 3 month review is up, but i cant help the odd weekly coke zero. Will it get worse? Seeing nurse this week will try and get my questions answered.

Hi @athletic ,

Indeed, it's not the end of the world. Come on through with the questions, it's what we're here for. As for the coke zero, well... To make a long story short, some might see a rise in blood sugars after having it, others have no problems whatsoever. Kind of depends on how your body responds to artificial sweeteners, but for a lot of us, they're okay. A blood glucose meter would tell you which is true for you, but if it's once in a while... Not seeing a whole lot of harm there.

https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html this might help some with your food-related questions in the meantime?

Good luck, and welcome,
Jo

Well a fat lot of good that advice on diet will be - to reduce blood glucose most type 2's reduce the amount of carbohydrate in the diet.
Carbohydrates are the starches and sugars, so bread, potatoes, pasta, biscuits, cakes, root vegetables, sugary drinks, sweet fruits and fruit juices are all candidates for reduction or removal.
A flavoured water with sweeteners is probably zero carb, though some people react to it, it isn't a source of carbohydrate.

Which desserts may i have or redeem? lol
How about sugar free jelly and cream, Greek yoghurt with berries, dark chocolate? There’s ann ice cream brand called Oppo which has less carbs than standard ice cream. Also try Googling Low Carb followed by a dessert you like.

Hi and welcome. Did they tell you what your HbA1c result was? that's the usual way in which T2 is diagnosed these days.

I drink quite a bit of Coke Zero as it has no sugars and there is no impact on my blood glucose. Some people report BG rises from Coke Zero - the only way you'll know which applies to you is to test your blood glucose both before and two hours after drinking, without taking in anything else.

I've had great success with a very low-carb way of eating - nearly five years now, and BGs normal since April 2020. For me that has meant no cereals, rice, pasta, potatoes, fruit, sugar, bread, pastry etc. Have a read around on the forums and ask as many questions as you like.

I have previously made my own low carb ice cream but I’ve recently found judes’s ice cream (in Sainsbury’s and elsewhere). The vanilla is my favourite and the lowest carb bought ice cream I’ve come across and it’s also the best ice cream I can remember having as a bonus and no more expensive than other branded icecream . The only downside is trying to not have too much. They did have a sale on little cinema style pots recently making them cheaper than the larger tubs and great for portion control.

Well, "not allowed" isn't quite true. No-one here is going to slap you silly for eating carby foods, and yes, the special K, bread, spuds and sweet corn are... Very, very carby. The thing is, you decide how you deal with your diabetes. Diet is one way to do it, but then you do need to add in more fats and protein, because you can't live off of salads and expect to be able to function or stay healthy. You need nutrients from somewhere, and fats and protein'd be the way to go. Like the eggs and cheese... Maybe leave off the bread and add in some bacon, one or two more eggs, more cheese, to make it more filling? No idea what's in the nuke-able veg pack, but yeah... If you want to go the diet route, start figuring out what suits your blood sugars and what doesn't, and don't try to get it all right overnight, there's no need to.

But "allowed"....? You know, there's three main ways to deal with T2 diabetes. Well, four, if you count not doing anything at all with it, which some people tend to do. But there's diet, there's medication, and there's a combo of the two. YOU decide what is right for you, as it is a bit of a life-long thing.... It has to suit you. And it's early days, you can take your time deciding. For the moment, maybe look into the non-carby foods that might fit your day-to-day life and build from there if you like.

I had some salty popcorn and crisps yesterday. I'm not supposed to have those either, and haven't for the past 7 or 8 years or so, but there was nothing else available at that moment, it was late, I was going to be there for hours yet, and I was decidedly hungry. No-one on this forum is going to beat me up over it. Just like they won't say a word other than encouraging ones if you let us know what you're eating. Your body. Your diabetes. Your choice. If there's something we can help with, we will, but... Your decision, always. ;)

I’m not seeing much protein or healthy unprocessed fats in this, which probably means you’ll get very hungry. They are both essential for life, health and feeling full. The goal isn’t to starve or be hungry. It’s to give your body the nutrition it needs and limit the stuff that’s unhelpful. Is there a reason why you’re choosing these sort of menus?

Personally I’d not be having the bread (any colour), cereals, or potatoes and I’d go easy on the sweetcorn as they are all high carb items. We can survive without any carbs at all, though that’s more extreme than almost any of us choose to go and we keep carbs from veg particularly, less so from sugary, grains and starchy items. Many people choose to reduce these items slowly rather than all at once but it’s good to know which items are likely the ones pushing your blood glucose higher

Looking at the food you're eating on the two days - I'd be feeling really under-nourished on that. The bulk of your intake seems to be carb-based - bread, special k, potatoes, sweetcorn - and blueberries are fairly high in fructose too. Hard to say exactly how much carb, as that depends on portion sizes.

If you're aiming for a low-carb approach, as well as reducing carbs both starchy and sweety, you need to be eating enough of the other foods to keep you going. For me that's meat and dairy.

Hi @athletic welcome to the forum,
It looks like you have realised already that you shouldn't panic about this T2 diagnosis, which is a good start.
Your change of diet will depend on if your HbA1c is only slightly above 48 mmol/mol, which is the threshold of a diagnosis, or if your HbA1cis is above 100 like it was for several of us at time of diagnosis here on the forum. If the former you only might need small adjustments to your. Your plan will also depend on if you have other symptoms, e.g. tingling feet, blurry vision, ... , your weight, if you have other health problems, ...
You could discuss these with the nurse. In addition ask them if they have checked that it is T2 and ruled out other types of diabetes.

Hello and welcome @athletic

I very much agree with the previous posters- you get to make all the decisions about how you deal with the diagnosis. I will suggest a few things though.

My first suggestions is to get a glucose meter. This is the tool that will let you know the effect different food have on your levels- you canteen make decisions with that information. I suggest that you keep some notes on what you ate- the level before you ate and the level 2 hours after your first bite. Ideally you want to see a rise of less than 2.

I also suggest reading around on the forum- try the success stories. That was helpful for me as it made me realise that I had choices and some of those choices meant that I may not face a future which looked pretty bleak.

Good luck and welcome.
