Hi all,
I was diagnosed with T2 in November 2012 and was prescribed 2 grams of metformin daily.
When I saw my consultant 6 months later, he reduced the dose to 1 gram and said if I continued to do well, I might very well end up as diet controlled.
Things carried on until December last when I began to feel odd - terribly thirsty, insatiable appetite, very sleepy and my vision was blurred. My bg had shot up to the mid twenties and I have no idea why.
I contacted my doc who advised doubling the metformin and added 80mg glicazide. It's now more than a month since all this and my bg remains far too high (11.4 after 12 hr fast) this morning.
My immediate problem is what to do about work. I find it very difficult to do my job properly at the mo and wonder if I can justifiably take sick leave until my bg is back under control.
I'd really appreciate your advice.
Thanks for reading.

Have you been back and discussed things with your doc ? There is a possibility you may have late onset T1 ? I have no idea of your diet so this could be a reason. There is not enough detail to offer sound advice to be honest. As for your employer, if you don't feel well enough, then you shouldn't be there. Again, I don't know your employer and some are more compassionate than others. Some won't even pay whilst on sick. I would take all your BG readings and go back to speak to your doc as clearly your current regime is not working. Good luck !

HI Vannesa, don't go down that road its so, so hard to find your way back, i know from past experience. a job is more than money coming in, its a life line.

look to your diet, and cut out carbs ,they are in flour, bread, rice, sugar ,potatoes, root veg, peas and pulses ,fruit,
have egg, bacon, and tomatoes for breakfast, cauliflower, steak , and celery for lunch, ham salad for tea and cheese and celery for supper, just a few idea's. and look at some of the posts on here, there are loads of people who will help you.
if you need to lose weight ,try looking at the Newcastle diet regime it worked for me ,my blood sugars went from 22mmols to 6 in two days and now I am classed as non diabetic by my gp,the implications are huge ,no worries over driving, travel insurance and health related problems with eyesight, foot and skin problems all cleared up.
the sense of euphoria is worth all the changes and new life style.
best of luck, love and hugs,go for it.

Hiya are you dieting as such

Hi Christine
Thanks for the reply. My diet is pretty good low carb most of the time and if I do eat something carby I make sure it's the most sensible I can eat eg brown everything!
I have to say my employer has been brilliant over the past 10 years, I've had 3 lengthy sick periods, ranging from 4 to 11 months with various endocrine disorders (a pituitary tumor, no growth hormone, hypothyroidism) and they have continued to employ me. That's why I don't really want to take sick leave - I feel as though I'm letting them down. On the other hand, I have to drive quite a lot in the course of my work and my eyesight is so bad right now I can't read the dashboard clock even with my specs on.
Really don't know what to do for the best.
Xx

Hi mrs gimli
Not dieting in the weight watching sense, but am being much more careful when it comes to carbs and hidden sugars etc. That's why I'm so surprised about my high bg - if anything I'm much better behaved than I was when my bg was was relatively normal!

Hi. I agree with mo that if you are around normal weight and low-carbing then Late onset T1 (LADA) is a possibility. The Met and Glic will help but if your sugars remain high despite controlling the carbs then a further tablet may be added or a move to insulin if needed in the future. See if you can reduce the carbs a bit further and do discuss options with the doc. Sitaglitpin is sometimes added as a 3rd tablet and can help a bit. Also the Gliclazide can be increased up to 320gm/day if needed. I was on that dose for a few years. Do discuss options with the doc if you continue to feel unwell. The high blood sugar may make you feel a bit tired etc but shouldn't make you feel ill as such. I wonder whether one of your other conditions is, as you say, part of the problem?

Hi sounds like your doing all you can I'd definatly go back to gp and chat x

Thanks everyone I will go back and see my doc, perhaps I need a proper mot!

never knew peas were carb heavey i been having them alot to x

It is strange and there is nothing obvious in what you have said that should cause such a reversal of fortune. You do really need to see a doctor and an opthalmologist by the sound of things. Lots of people make lots of health issues worse by avoiding the docs. These forums are full of people saying that they wished they'd gone earlier. Knowing allows you to adjust and make plans. Avoiding issues means you are feeling in the dark.

:eek:Glad that Chrsitine let you know about this. Yes, I was very surprised myself when I went down lists of veggies and found out how high their carb content is.

Lately, I've been staying with broccoli, cauliflower and celery. I also use a home-made sea-algae spirulina mixture for more green-plant protein.

But please still see the ophthalmologist and your GP. Hope you vision improves soon.

My sometimes blurry vision comes mainly from the "floaters" I have, mainly in my right eye. Seems like it happens only when I am very tired, am dehydrated, or, have had too many carbs. I hope to see an ophthalmologist as soon as my "Obamacare" , here, in the States kicks in.

Hi again all - thanks for the support and brill advice.
I rang my consultant 's office and asked if I could bring my appointment forward, as April seems pretty far away right now.
I spoke to his secretary (who also appears to be an endocrinologist) who told me that I couldn't possibly be seen before April, as they don't have many doctors.
I'm sure that now my bg is aware of the staff shortages it'll play the game and go back to its usual cooperative self!

No don't go back to being sweet. Kick your bits off and kick their backsides very hard and demand to be seen including threatening legal action for any thing that occurs due to not being seen and degeneration in your condition.

And being very blunt ... Quit driving I am sure that when you crash and kill or severely injuresomeone maybe even inc. yourself as you didn't see them it will make all the difference to the family's involved that you decided to be and sweet and not hassle the clinic and that you are just trying to be nice by going into work or home or whatever reason you were driving. .

Thanks Mud Island - I probably needed a boot in the bum too you're quite right, being nice about things usually gets us nowhere.
I don't think anyone I hurt by driving badly would take kindly to being told that I carried on driving even though I can't see at the moment because I don't want to let my boss down.
Thanks so much for the reality check - time to stop driving and start kicking bottom.

Yes, I think that what Mud Island is saying is correct.
I don't like being pushy either, but I am very good at it once I realize what the consequences might be for not taking care of certain things. Sometimes administrators, gov agencies, doctors, etc. give up and give in to my wishes just to ultimately be rid of me. ( :jimlad: "arg-g-g, it's her again ! ")
Keep kicking butt, be proactive, be a royal pain in the ****, if need be. Whatever it takes to get your needs met.
Good luck !;)

Thanks for the pep talk - my family say I'm a royal pain in the butt when I start - time to spread the love then!
